This actually moved me. Obviously I love Anthony Jackson for a number of reasons. He is about as serious as you can get on this planet in terms of his love for the instrument, as a musician and his views on music. His resume is vast, and his rhythmic convictions are signature and undeniable. This is one of the greatest examples of chordal bass work ever done.

This same bassist, in my opinion, the best living all around bassist, can also get extremely funky AND play this genre of music, among others. Anthony Jackson: Brilliance at more than the 10th power!

Akiko is one stellar musician. She is a superb pianist and has a lovely voice. There aren't many female artists so gifted. Anthony plays a lot with Hiromi, but needs a less virtuosic accompanyment here.

Ok I love the timbre of the bass. I respect that he has created a new subset of the classical guitar. There is a century of learning that is to be done on what he has created with this instrument. But want a waste putting all of that design and effort into both development and playing such an instrument; which is inherently flawed in terms of intonation. The guitar is an instrument that will always be out of tune by design. So why create a bass with the same flaws. It seems that this genius of a musician and creator as well as the world would have been better served if this bass guitar would have been fretless!. Listen to the chords especially when he has to play a B against them. There is a reason why violins, viola, cello and bass don't have frets! Now before you get crazy, do your self a favor and begin by reading "How Equal Temperament Ruined Harmony" by Ross W. Duffin. There are many more resources on the subject. I am just saying that that bass and the new version would have a much better sound, to better serve this great mind and musician Mr. Jackson.

You'd really have to ask the man himself. I could sit here and either agree or argue with the point you make (a well thought out point I might add) but in the end I think there's a definite line of reasoning that he employed in developing the instrument the way he did and it'd be interesting to hear him address your critique.
@jlmoses1611 жыл бұрын
To my knowledge, AJ has always played fretted bass. And I don't see it being tremendously harmful playing an equal-tempered instrument in a combo where the only other pitched instrument is also equal-tempered tuned. There are a couple of reasons right there why it was made fretted. And I say this as a double bassist/fretless electric bassist.
