Because they were portrayed as goofballs on the show, some did not realize how well they could do the songs.

I think it was a really pleasant surprise to their new fans. Plus, they had many old troupers: Ken Mars, Jane Dulo, Avery Schreiber, Soupy Sales, etc..., to help them develop their comedy chops. There really was a lot of great talent on that show. I forgot to mention Harvey Lembeck; he was associated with Sha Na Na only briefly, but his delivery blended perfectly with theirs.
