This movie was what introduced me to the book. I thought at first it was a horror story. Anna Paquin is excellent as the young Jane, and the contrast with the subdued & restrained 18 year old Jane as played by Charlotte is striking. Don't know if it's really supposed to be like that. Mia Wasikowska's Jane feels even more subdued. I wonder if Ruth's 2006 version is a more correct representation. And after having seen other versions, I think the most apt version or portrayal of Mr. Rochester is probably Toby in 2006 BBC production-the energy, athleticism as described in the book and his informality towards Jane was represented really well.

In the book, after the first wedding is called off, Rochester tells Jane that she intrigued him almost from the first moment that they met when she helped him after the accident with his horse -- and that as he became better acquainted with her, he also became more attached to her. I think this incident definitely cemented Rochester's attraction to her -- because the very next morning, he left Thornfield to pay a visit to Ingram Park which suggests that he was already determined to find out if Jane returned his feelings and speculating on the possibility that making her jealous might prompt her to acknowledge it.

I think it depends on what meaning one put into the words "quiet" and "shy". Jane might have been quiet and shy up to some point in time, but I come to think of a passage in Ch XVI where Jane tells us, the Readers: "I knew the pleasure of vexing and soothing him by turns; it was one I chiefly delighted in, and a sure instinct always prevented me from going too far; beyond the verge of provocation I never ventured; on the extreme brink I liked well to try my skill."

@@sarahbrightmore3749 same here, Sir Timothy Dalton has immortalized Edward Rochester. Some people are born to play specific roles. He even looked like king Philip II of France in lion in winter movie, i liked his acting in Mary Queen of Scots as well. 😄 Charlotte Gainsborough really resembles with my mental image of Jane. I liked this fire scene as well, even though it's different from the novel. But It's kind of sweet, the way he pressed handkerchief on her hand, aww!!
@sarahbrightmore37493 жыл бұрын
@@cellowali2865 Yes I always thought she looks the most right for Jane (her and Mia) and I do LOVE this part when he gives his handkerchief, it's more intimate slightly then just the taking of her hands in his. And when they are staring into each others eyes after their exchange of words, Charlotte profile is very striking, there is that youth and innocence there.

You can't call William Hurt a passionate Rochester.His portrayal of the role lacks the sparkle that is so essential for this part.

2011 version is better
@OreadNYC Жыл бұрын
I agree. Hurt wasn't able to capture an important part of Rochester's character, which is his decidedly mercurial temperament. Rochester definitely has a tendency to brood -- and he certainly has a legitimate reason for being that way -- but he is by nature an emotional and passionate man and his frustrations over being saddled with a psychotic wife, even when she's right there at Thornfield, can't overcome that side of him completely. In my opinion, Ciaran Hinds unfortunately overplayed Rochester while William Hurt underplayed him. By far, the two best Rochesters in my book are Timothy Dalton and Toby Stephens.

I'm not all that impressed with this adaptation of "Jane Eyre" but I do rather like the way in which Hurt's Rochester softly repeats the word "cold" in this scene as if he doesn't really believe her. After all, this is not just the scene in which Rochester's curiosity about Jane begins to turn into attachment...it's also the scene in which Jane begins to become aware of Rochester not just as her employer but as a man. As an older and more experienced man, Rochester would be aware that women don't always tremble when they're cold or afraid...they sometimes also tremble when they're near someone they find attractive. When Casanova was looking for a new conquest, he reportedly kept his eye out for women whose hands shook when they were around him and who had difficulty meeting his eyes...because he knew that those women were the ones most affected by him.

It's hard to say exactly why - it's just something I've always felt. Maybe because Charlotte actually looks closer to 18 than Zelah (who was really 29 when the 1983 version was made). Now, since I made that comment several months ago about preferring C. to Z., Z. has really grown on me since I've watched the 1983 version countless times. I do like her alot. Anyway, I can hardly stand to watch this version anymore after seeing the 1983 one, so I guess it doesn't matter if I like C. better. ; )

after seeing Dalton and Clarke, this typical superficial and only optical Zeffirelli (amd as opera Profi I know him since decades) isnt to suffer. Firstly after the 1983 Version, whose word by word and adaption in all casting has fidelity to the original book with an acting and subtilst emotional firework, I understood that Rochester is a complexe main character, and thats a love story, a story about a double character development and no ghost story o blank story of a governess. Like 2006 and 2011 here the characters are the same like on beginning. And all important scenes and dialoges are not rattled off like in the newer ones, or pathetical like 1997 or passed over like here. Rochester and Jane in the book were not such lethagical depressive. And both had at least some impulsivity and charisma. But this Version I saw in TV several times I forget after few hours. And I could not remember it review it now after some days, whereas at least 1983 and little bit 2011 don t let me go since months. And let me reread the novel several times, fantasy about other story solutions.
