Shaco has a weird rubber band mechanic. If you start the backstab animation while the target is facing its side, then there's about a 2-3 frame window that the backstab will still go through. It works on jg creeps and minions too. You can test this for yourself if you'd like. Play Shaco as jg, it's the most consistent way you'll see it, and farm creeps. Move around to the side of the creep and backstab it while it's turning towards you. If you do it right, then the backstab will still go through despite the target facing you. The opposite is true to Shaco though. If you are about 2-3 frames from taking damage but use Q, then the damage will still go through despite the fact that you're invisible and blinked away, so no longer a viable target for targeted abilities/auto attacks. It's still in the game because Shaco is about 2 centuries old and nobody at Rito has bothered to update the champ beyond small balancing changes to the damage that the abilities do.
