On a separate note: I used to grow coleus from seed for my mother and found them to be... tempermental. Most are considered shade plants, especially here in Florida, but to get the best color, they needed to be in the sun. So the ones that did the best color as well as healthy growth in my mother's yard were the ones that got morning sun and evening sun, vbut were shaded by a Holly tree from about noon to 4 pm. In the nearby Villages FL, they put their coleus out in full sun in spring and autumn and keep them regularly irrigated. But only for a few weeks before they rip them out and replace them.

Thank you for the additional information! Coleus loves our climate, but I agree with your assessment they are temperamental. Especially to bring out the vibrant color.

Thank you for your comment! You mentioned you are in NC - I hope you are okay! Did you get damage from Hurricane Helene?

@@ButterfliesNBirds I am in the central part of the state and was fortunate enough not to receive any damage.

I am very glad to hear you didn't receive damage! Helene wrecked so much damage across such a wide area.

If you put some sulphur dust on your soil it should help your colors brughten up.

I believe coleus is in the same family as salvia and mint, basil. I’m finding pollinators generally LOVE plants in this family if they are left to bloom.
@ButterfliesNBirds2 ай бұрын
You are right about the plant family coleus is in! Most people don't let their coleus bloom because they lose their beautiful leaf concentrations and focus then on blooming. But I just cannot help letting them bloom late in the summer because they attract so many pollinators. Last evening I had two hummingbirds enjoying the porterweed, yellow salvia, and the coleus when it was getting dusk. I really enjoy watching nature.

Sitting out back in the shade on a muggy Friday morning after staking up some 8ft goldenrod knocked over by Helene (about the extent of our 'damage' here). Start this video up and I find myself repeatedly pausing within the first minute to see where the blue jay was in my yard... and again later in the video looking for the titmouse... earbuds be tricky.

I have just returned from a trip to Dallas and I am hopeful you are okay. Did you get damage from Hurricane Milton?

@@ButterfliesNBirds A couple of fence panels were removed by the winds and some pineapple plants lost their footing (tipped over but still in place). Oh and a crow was apparently injured, but our dog found it before we did :(. Aside from that, not much happened... for us.

I am happy you had "minimal" damage at your location! These hurricanes are awful and nobody wants them.

I am very disappointed with the el brighto coleus, same thing here, green with some purple. Also the ones from the other online coleus nursery were unimpressive also
@ButterfliesNBirds2 ай бұрын
Thank you for letting me know you had the same experience. I was considering trying the El Brighto in a large container on my patio for next year, but now I am not so sure. Very underwhelming for sure! 😕
