I was watching this episode. About to hit the next episode button. But I'm like "Who is this?" Brian Wilson? Elliot Smith? Nick Drake? I like it but I'm about to click next anyway and then........"She's gone".......gutted. Voice. Melody. Chords. Perfect. Chess mate. Well played anonymous Netflix music supervisor. Perfect song to this episode.

I cried for days when beth's adoptive mother died, and that episode ended with this song. I couldn't imagine how it destroyed beth. She had lost so many things 😭✋

Beautiful, exquisite. I wondered at first if it might be Midlake. I love all the music from the series not least the original music composed for it. I just watched episode 4 and i thought it was stunningly beautiful. This track completed the effect.

Sounds like a mix of Pink Floyd, Alan Parsons Project, Pet Sounds album, and somewhere in time. The lyrics almost nonsensical but it's art and it's awesome!

Some of this makes me think of the Beatles, I think it's cause of the flute like sounds and the odd percusive keyboard sounds.

True ye definitely. I love the chord progression even tho it has been done a billion times I like how they don't go to the dominant at the end of the progression. Quite nice that they didn't do that

I fall into it when I first hear this . the sound and melody so powerful and sadness. But Can someone please explain the lyrics of this song meaning? English not my mother language so I don't really understand that how this song relate to her(Beth). There's a implication? like highway song? The cars? or other words? Please help.
@teflonduck52634 жыл бұрын
The song as a whole is about the loss of control Beth feels. To me, most of the lyrics are talking about Beth's ability to play chess on the ceiling.. which she always does as she's going to sleep. She said in her interview with Life magazine that Chess was it's own small world that she could control, and dominate..that she only had herself to blame if she got hurt. The small town, where the streets are the possible moves that the people(chess pieces) in her town can take which she controls. The song in the end is about the loss of control. When it speaks about she's gone, off the highway this could either be talking directly about the loss of her mother or it could be talking about Beth having to step outside of this small world she's made for herself which she finally felt she had control over. The highway could be an even further connection to how she lost her birth mother in the car accident where she had no control.
