The FM Towns version certainly does justice to the Amiga original. Somehow, the music, although technically better, lacks the the full atmosphere of the original. It's slightly upbeat and cheerful, whereas the original was sinister and foreboding. There's should be a bass guitar. Some aspects of the graphics are better - the main character animation for example. But the surface level foreground scrolling wall with broken gate looks worse.

I like how it remains faithful to the Amiga gameplay and tries improving all the other aspects of the game.

It also has an extra layer of tree parallax which is quite nice, out of all these conversions I will always put the Amiga first.

This version is definitely second-best, but somehow the Amiga had better colors, better scrolling, and remains the definitive version of the game. You would expect the FM Towns to destroy the Amiga, but this game literally pushed the Amiga to the limits and all other versions pale compared to it. The CD soundtrack is awesome, Tim Wright!

Thank you for this video sir ! I tried and played all versions of SOTB (for science and fun) but i never managed to get the FM Towns version to work.

This version brings back some of the stuff the Turbografx version cut. That wall jumping enemy, and the final bosses hand.

The music's good, and it looks like it plays well, but the overworld graphics in particular have been robbed of their atmosphere. They look a lot more cartoony and bright than in the Amiga original.
@ZEUSDAZ7 жыл бұрын
Agreed, they actuall look like they've been ripped from the TurboGrafx version and then touched up.
@maxbrandt6 Жыл бұрын
This is probably the nicest version of the original SotB game I've seen yet, much better graphics and music then the old Amiga 1000 version I played all those many years ago!
@ricsim788 ай бұрын
The music is CD quality Tim Wright, so of course! But graphics? No way, the Amiga version looks better, has better scrolling, and more colors on screen. It is definitely the superior versions, then FM Towns 2nd best, PC-Engine CD-ROM 3rd best. Then the rest.
@juanthai44315 ай бұрын
I accept your opinion about the sound. but the graphics? no way ! The Amiga version is graphically superior. not very superior but a little superior

Looks like a Flash based game. Amiga version is still the best. :-) Although, I do respect the FM Towns hardware.

Yep Amiga was the original and best version period.
@parallaxcraze9587 жыл бұрын
This version looks MUCH better than the PC Engine/Turbografx-16 version. The CD soundtrack is the same but the FM Towns version was the first which used it since it was released before, so basically the PC Engine version is a downgraded port of this one. IMO Amiga and FM Towns are the two best versions. Master System version is also interesting with its few changes.

This is my second favorite version of SOTB after the Amiga. While technically better than the Amiga in terms of graphics, i still prefer the Amiga versions look by far. The original is very hard to top in that regard.

Japanese developers didn't touch this. Tim Ansell programmed it, Psygnosis produced the graphics, and the music was produced in the UK too. AFAIK, Psygnosis produced all of their FM Towns games themselves.
@parallaxcraze9587 жыл бұрын
"Japanese developers are so f**king good, its an insult" Japanese developers mainly stood out for two things: - their distinctive art style. - and when it comes to the gameplay of some specific genres, europeans developers couldn't touch their shooters or beat 'em ups. But others than that you're exagerating big time. Europeans developers were extremely competent too and creative, just look at developers such as Psygnosis, Factor 5, Zyrinx, etc. with games such as the Turrican serie, Flashback, The Chaos Engine, Sub-Terrania, etc. or here Shadow of the Beast. I would even say that Europeans developers from back then are actually underrated. "its basically a 32bit remake" No. And given the respective release dates and prices of the Amiga and FM Towns, the Amiga actually puts to shame the latter here ;)
@elmariachi51334 жыл бұрын
Well, I listened to the soundtrack for some time, and have to say, that I prefer the Amiga version pretty much. The sample quality and clarity of the FM towns is of course much higher, because of the CD-Audio, but the composition and mixing just isn't up to what the music is intended to be. They just changed rhythm and mood too much. There are some parts of the score that are close to the original and maybe are better, because of the audio quality, but 90% of the composition is just too neutral and distant from the supposed atmosphere.

Conga drums percussion on title track check! In-game music replaced by a remix of what sounds like 80s rubbish rock synth music check! graphics with many more colours that manage to look not as well drawn OR shaded check and less technically impressive even if they were running on an Amiga 500 check!.....need I go on? lol. It could have been much better graphically and with a CD soundtrack and 16bit sound card sounded better too....but it doesn't. Not as bad as the SNES version but the overground level apart from the trees looks like the work of a spastic on photoshop v1.0 :o) You only need to look at Afterburner on FM towns to see its potential, it has more colours/bigger palette and much more mb/s bandwidth for the graphic displays and a 32bit CPU to boot (386DX25 I think).
