Exactly! My thoughts: In most video games when you get to the final stage/boss fight, the music is epic. It makes you feel like a total badass and pumps you up for the final showdown. Not this game. This is the final boss battle music for the game, “Shadow of the Colossus.” It’s completely opposite of what you’d expect; it’s haunting and hopeless. When that ominous music starts and slowly builds, a pit forms in your stomach. You know something just isn’t right. You don’t feel excited that you’re close to “beating the game.” You start to question all your previous actions. It makes you feel as though nothing good can come from this. You have doomed yourself and others. Guilt sets in as you realize that even though you were motivated by true love and the purest of intentions, your selfish human desires made it easy for the darkest of evil to manipulate you into doing their sinister bidding. By ingeniously turning your Love against you, these ancient demons twisted and corrupted your once good soul. And so deceptively certain of the honorableness of your actions, you recklessly trudged on your death march, mercilessly slaying these MASSIVE, majestic creatures, one by one-only to realize that in the end, you’ve become the biggest monster of them all.

The colossi acted as individual prisons to hold Dormin, the spiritual entity which bargained with Wander. Still, they were relative innocent as they probably couldn't or didn't choose to carry such a heavy burden, or maybe they were created solely for that purpose. That last strike and the beautifully haunting music always hits you in the feels department.

Did you know that Fumito Ueda, the creator of Shadow of the Colossus, originally had 48 colossi in mind when planning the game? Some of the unused colossi were: Devil (Gargoyle), Griffin (Griffin), Monkey (Monkey), Pheonix (Ostrich), Roc (Bird of prey), Sirius (Boar), Spider (Daddy longleg) and Worm (Worm).

Darth Obito I imagine the fight being something like this: solid legs, no climbing points, main body is elevated and very high up. It's like a Daddy Long Leg rather than the traditional tarantula-isk shape. To get onto it, use the terrain. The colossus tries to slam you with one of its 8 limbs, creates a sort of ramp that you must use in order to use it as a seesaw to get sprung upwards, eventually grabbing its hairy body. The arena would take place where there would be marbled floors and there would be 2 sigils: 1 in the rear abdomen, 1 on top of the head. Would be a nightmare to program though as the 16 we know and love already took like 3+ years during development

simunator Actually, in the wiki it is mentioned that there were some weakspots on the legs you had to side attack while riding Agro then get it down, but it was scrapped because they made an attack JUST for this colossi, and Spider (fan-named Aberth) was overpowered as hell, with one-shot kill attack in his arsenal.

I only played "The ICO and Shadow of the Colossus Collection" on PS3. I never played the original of either. But I have to say, both games were truly experiences. Games with such subtle story telling and subtle emotions, yet with incredible epic moments. While I will admit, Shadow was the better of the two games, both had some great moments. The music, the settings, the art was all just beautiful. Hopefully we'll get The Last Guardian in this lifetime.

The best thing about this game is the control. You control how you scale each giant. Most games now insist on quick time events because the developers are too lazy to actually give you the controls you need to do something exciting like this game does. Taking down one colossi is far more rewarding than taking down any of the giants/Gods/demons from God of War, sure they had personality but there was no achievement in pressing buttons when the game tells you too.

I have a really good idea for a game. At least I think. The premise is that there is an evil priest/wizard guy that summons these huge beings. They can be dragons, humans, or anything in between, and it plays like Shadow of the Colossus. You climb on these giants and there is your move button, and your interact button. If your not on the spot of interacting, you will just stab, but in sometimes, that's not the case. On the dragon, you'll stab the wings to make it crash. Oh yes, it will be flying

Just two small things.. They don't terrorize the forbidden lands. most of them (some say that all of them) are stuck in their arenas and few are quite peacefull ([very minor spoiler] also, I theorise that some are attacking you because they see the pillars of light, indicating the place where are the colossus you killed so far, and are afraid of you. Also, maybe they noticed the ancient sword, the only thing that can kill them). The next thing that Quadratus (the fan name to the colossus you said is one of the smaller ones), is actually the seconed in terms of height after the final colossi (malus), and I can estimate is one of the bulkiest, including Malus, Phalanx and Dirge.

The 12 colossus phalanx doesn't attack you, you attack few of them to get them close like the 5th avion, and there's room to speculate. and yes, they hold a part of dormin's soul, but still, it's not like (MAJOR SPOILER) wander getting possessed, they only protect it(MAJOR SPOILER ENDED). still, they are not terrorizing the forbidden lands.

hunterofyou Actually *MOST* of them are peacefull. Almost every colossus you fight it's because you started attacking them. Heck, some of them don't even attack you at all. But most of them only act in self defence because you're attacking them. The only agressive ones that actually attack when they see you are the first one, the fith one, the last one, the bearded one and... The two small ones? Also that sandworm/snake thing.

The fifth one is Avion (The small bird out of the two flying colossus), and is an example of a one where you need to shoot an arrow to lure him towards you. Otherwise, he'll just sit there. Anyway, your statement is not true. Most do attack you once you've provoken them with your presence in their territory: Valus (The first, if you get close enough to him he'll start attacking you), Quadratus (The second), Gaius (The third), Phaedra (The fourth), Barba (The sixth, and the bearded one),Kuromori (The eighth), Basaran (The ninth), Dirge (The tenth, the snake looking one), Celosia (The eleventh, one of the small ones), Pelgia (The twelfth), Cenobia (The fourteenth, the other small one), Argus (The fifteenth) and Malus (The sixteenth and the last one). Play the game again to see what I mean.

I meant them being peacefull towards the creatures inside the valley(if there are any other than those lizards...) and the other colossi, and that the only ones that i actually think would attack other was the ones i listed(also the one that looks like a turtle). But, i can understand why some of them would attack you, like the third one, he's at the top of a tower, or whatever, in the middle of a river sleeping and you go there disturb him... Most of them are just chilling until you arrive to destroy them...

Wow this review is bringing back so many memories of Summer 2006 when I bought this game! The only thing stopping me from buying a PS2 again and playing it is the fact that this is coming to PS3 in HD (this is the only PS2 game I refused to sell)! It is also one of the best games I have played as well. The music really does reflect every moment of the game wonderfully. My personal favorite is the desert flying one.I remember getting to that one and my brain new the mechanics of the game to know exactly what to do and I was never intimated I saw the thing flying around and knew it was going down. you make the shots and then your all "alright i'm going to old west train jump onto you and then, oh shit your flying back up and there goes the earth. Then you look down Arrow (the horse, that's what name I hear when he says it, i could be wrong.) that horse is still chasing you. Also then you start pricking the dragon and he flies back into the sand and you know I will kill you and save my love. It's just a great feeling the whole time. Every boss is just so good.

I loved how the colossi were different. Some would immediately become pissed and charge at you. Others wouldn't do a thing until you provoke them. I always had this sense of remorse and guilt when hunting the more calm ones. I knew I had to kill it, but I thought "Well, he isn't hurting anything....right...?"

It does have a story and characters, even simple ones. The concept isn't what makes a game or even a creative piece in general. A concept is a group of drawings you look at for 10 seconds and say 'cool' before moving on. Everything about the game had to be present to achieve what it did. it's not just another shooter, it pushes the boundaries that other generic shooters don't. The game is necessarily mindless sci-fi shooting, which is fun, particularly when your character is built from the ground up to be a badass

Good review man, but I don't know if I'd call this game "underrated". It may not have been everywhere like CoD or Halo, but it got a decent amount of VERY GOOD publicity. Game did WAY better over here than ICO at least.

I loved this game. The ending really blew me away. It was like finding out Tom Hardy Will be Bane in The Dark Knight Rises. I did not see it coming. If I have a job and extra money when the PS3 HD comes out I'll definitely buy.

This game was Adam Sandler game in the movie Reign Over Me. One of the best games ever!

Some colossus were different. They didn't attack until provoked while others attacked on sight. It was a territorial and a defensive thing.

The controls while riding the horse sucked, but with the main character were fine. I love the physics engine while u were on the colossi, how the character stumbles while the colossi moves its fucking awesome

I have been playing the HD edition all day (first time ever even playing SOTC, let alone HD) and on long rides to bosses I would have some of your reviews on. I just beat it like 20 minutes ago then stumble upon this. This was destiny Jeremy... destiny.
