The two things that really stuck out to me from rise to shadow was the quality of the AA and the volumetric lighting. Those combined provided a huge shift towards more cinematic vs gamey graphics. Yeah you do lose some fine detail at a distance but I am fine with that trade off.

That Car Guy Well the Xbox One X is only equivalent to a slightly adjusted GTX 1060, besides the GTX 1070 stopped being considered near the high end when the 1080TI released, and with Turing architecture coming Xbox One X gets pushed even further down. My laptop I use when staying at my bro's, runs everything better than my one x. It has a 1060 in it (which is 10% lower than the main card) and an i5. So I don't see how my one x is possibly as good as a 1070......when a laptop 1060 is better than it. And on my main Pc I have a gtx 1070 and an i7-6700k. The 1070 is good. So I agree with you there. It is a high end card. Why? Well every game I throw at it, hasn't dipped below 60fps on all Ultra settings. Therefore it runs with the best.

For many, PC is about playing at the highest fidelity. Lately, the PC analysis here at DF has been missing key features that gamers like me care about. Can it hit 4K60? If not how is the frame pacing when locking the FPS to 4K30? Is HDR implemented on PC? How is the quality of HDR? Does the client automatically enable HDR or do you have to toggle the option on in windows to enable HDR? If it does not run at 4K, does it run well on Ultra Wide @3440x1440? Personally, this is the info I am looking for to determine if I am going to go with PC or Console version of the game. Older DF videos would nail most of these points, and also would use Titan GPUs in addition to general gpus to have most PC tiers covered. It is expected for any modern game to run at ultra settings at 1080p. No real news here. Hopefully you guys can cover some of the options I mentioned here in the future.

This game is THE new PC benchmark. Utterly outstanding. A lot of people (as of early release) have had a lot of issues with game, even with top end cards. I however have had fantastic performance lately. And I’m on a 1070, with a 8600k@ 5.0ghz, so I’m sure that plays a large role in it. As people are reporting high end CPU’s are the biggest issue. We’re finally seeing what DX12 is capable, which is awesome. Because this game would chug on DX11.

Graphics are great and all, but it's not too important for me personally. I have a Samsung UN40MU7000FXZA 4K TV and a PlayStation 4 Pro with Samsung 860 EVO 2 TB SSD and that's what I'll use to play _Shadow of The Tomb Raider_ along with backlog of games that I have for the PS4. I'm satisfied with the quality that I get from playing games on the PS4, and graphically games these days in general look good enough. If the game has a good story that keeps me occupied with it, I'm more than satisfied; especially if the gameplay is intuitive and engaging. It also helps to make sure that FPS is stable and doesn't have any major frame pacing issues. Xbox games that always seem to tout graphics, hardware, etc should honestly be playing games on PC if graphical fidelity is their main concern as most games on the Xbox are also on the PC. In that regard, I think owning a PS4 and PC is the best way to get the most graphically impressive games, followed by the Switch for its exclusives and creative games derived from Nintendo's first party & exclusive studios. With that said, console game is not likely to ever match or outperform PC's considering that with a PC you always have the option to upgrade components; something you cannot do on a game console besides internal storage....oops, only PS4 currently lets you upgrade internal storage. LOL

Xbox1X is a steal at 499.... this looks great.. especially compared to a much more expensive PC. You lose FPS... but gain not having to mess around in options menus when you thought you had the setting dialed in then it dips horrible in the next level and you have to figure out what settings to cut. They didn't bother comparing Playstation to PC... interesting.

Chalupa Batman You might have misunderstood me. In most games.. especially Fallout 4... I spent a ridiculous amount of time dialing in PC settings. I'd get the game running smoothly at what I thought were settings my PC could handle.. then I go to a new area... like the Commonwealth in Fallout 4... or the various stress test areas of Witcher 3 that DF talks about.. then I have to re-do my settings mid game... annoying. Not the end of the world... but when I see games like Shadow of the Tomb Raider running this well on console... and I have the X1X... I'll just get that version. Save my PC for games that don't run well on console, or ones that play better with mouse and keyboard.... ...Then I made a separate observation about Playstation. The 3rd person narrative slash JRPG box.

One more thing.. in game benchmarks are sometimes good. not Always. Gears 4 on PC has a great in-game benchmark... and I was able to overdrive the resolution to my screen with a variable resolution and a locked frame rate. Some games do it great. Not all games are hard to optimize on PC.

Xcentr1cK You don't think this is better suited to KB+M? There's a large focus on shooting. I always wonder if I should use a controller in 3rd person action games. With the amount of aiming in Tomb Raider I would probably stick to KB+M, but other games like Witcher 3 or Shadow of Mordor only have a little aiming and seem like a controller would work well. I never end up using one though.

It seems they added anisotropic filter on Xbox one x with the patches. I noticed it immediately. Since this video was done before patch I'm glad they added it :) but yeah, even on the last console generation there was no anisotropic filtering which was a shame given that there's little to no performance impact. Happy to see that the X applies 16x anisotropic filter and 4k in almost every older game now.

The problem I have with all the technological advancements is 90% of the time I never notice any of it while actively playing games. Does this mean the technology is doing it's job? Maybe. I also never stop to look at a wall or shadows while playing a game either. The only thing I do stop for to appreciate is good art design. A games performance however is easily noticed from the get go. Everything shown off here is cool and interesting but I wouldn't have noticed any of it while playing the game aside from Lara's aliased hair and maybe ray traced shadows.

There are a lot of details that you would never notice, but contribute greatly to the sense that something "looks good". Just because it's not noticed doesn't mean it doesn't have an impact, and certainly doesn't mean we can't appreciate it. If what you were saying were true, realistic games a couple years ago would look essential the same as the games of today. That's not true though; you can immediately tell that they look worse "for some reason". That's why all this is interesting - it has an impact (maybe not to the same degree as 10 years ago), and now you can understand how and why.

Alone those shadows, texture filtering and AO doesnt make a big difference but when everything is working together and the game slows down to exploring tombs and caves, even though its only for a few seconds I think, this game looks good.

SMAA 4X FTW! I've been doing that in GTA V ever since I upgraded to a GTX 1080 Ti and it's been amazing! I play on a 1920x1080p panel with the in game's resolution scaling set to 2x, effectively rendering that game at 3840x2160 (4K) and down sampling it to fit my monitors resolution. On top of DSR, I have MSAA 2x enabled as well as MFAA enabled/forced through Nvidia's control panel with FXAA to top it all off. The end result is beautiful. Obviously having a native 4K display is going to look much better but DSR's free :D. Now just imagine if Shadow Of TTR supported VXAO as well as MFAA in DX12. 😍

Please can we all stop fighting and just play the game on the device that we have. Not everyone has a PC so they get a console so they can enjoy a game the way they can afford. I have a PC and I love it but I don't make people feel like crap when they have a console. I just play the game and enjoy the game. When we criticize people with consoles its like criticizing a poor man on a street. ( I'm not saying everyone with a console is poor) I'm just saying that some people can't afford a high end PC. It's a pride issue that xbox/ps4 fans have. I have a ps4 pro and I have it for the exclusives. I had Xbox 1x and Its not bad at all It's great for the price. It's like a super car (PC) you don't need it but when you have it it's a great feeling. I just want to state one more thing, it is not that a console owner is always like a "poor man on the street" compared to a high-end PC, it is just that sometimes people like myself don't want to spend the extra money on high performance PC. Some of us don't see the value on spending a ton of cash for a better graphics and frame rate. If some people do, and are willing to spend the extra money for a objectively better gaming experience, it's totally fine. But to look to down upon someone and mock it because they can't afford or are not willing to spend the money on a high-end PC is just rude and shows how those people who do that are pitiful , closed minded and small individuals. Nobody with sane mind can't deny that consoles offers great value for the money and that Sony exclusives look gorgeous and play reasonably well on a objectively "limited" hardware. Also there is a matter of comfort and plug and play. I for example enjoy playing on my couch with controller in my hand, rather than behind the desk. Before anybody says it it easy to hook up PC to a TV and use the controller, no I don't want to bother with it for numerous reasons. I have a solid gaming laptop (i7 + 1050Ti) and a PS4 PRO and I spend much more time playing on a console. I use laptop for other things and an occasional gaming session. It's just a matter of preference and choice.

i dont like this comparison. They didn't did XBOX ONE X 4k vs PC 4k. Or texture comparisson with XBOX ONE X 4k mode, which is the real case for that console, againts the PC 4k Ultra settings. Alex has not the feeling for these comparison. He made RTX comparisson which is not even out yet. By Rise of the Tomb Raider they compared excelent all 3 platforms, example in textures.

RTX >>> 4K Ultra high resolutions are a gimmick. They always have been. 1440p is the sweetspot for performance and image quality. If the RTX 2080 Ti can somehow get 60fps at 1440p with RTX enabled, then that would be a way better option (for me at least) than 4K/60fps with no Ray-Tracing. Good lighting in games helps immensely with immersion. What does 4K do? Sharpen the image and reduce jaggies a bit. That's all. All whilst tanking the performance. And you can only notice the difference in quality if you're sat close to your display. From normal viewing distances, 2K and 4K look practically identical. But RTX on vs off is a clear discernible difference, with Ray-Tracing on looking far better than with it turned off.

Lawrence Newman not true. The PS4 version can't do true 4k and suffers big frame drops. The X1X is a big leap in performance and fidelity. DF actually recommended to play the PS4 version in high frame rate mode because the 4k mode looks so bad.They chose to compare the PC version with the X1X because the rest of the competition doesn't come close.

DJBV still, they didnt show 4k so it was a very unfair comparison. Devs dont use the xbox one xs power for higher settings but almost exclusively to push the regular console versions to higher resolutions and post processing. My pc of course beats the x when it comes to details in most games but it struggles a lot with anything close to 4k
