If I heard right, David wasn't really a voice actor before SA2. He was a theater actor the voice of Sonic worked with and suggested for Shadow. Considering that he improved A LOT in Heroes. I grew up with Griffith and I like him just fine, but Humphrey nailed the character if you ask me.

7:27 and 8:55 the duality of man…Hedgehog. Humphrey is still the best. A big theme with the Dreamcast cast: natural. They sound natural. It’s not nostalgia that makes this cast the best sounding to me, it’s how they don’t sound like they’re putting on a voice. Particularly Sonic, Knuckles, Shadow, and Rouge. To this day, those actors sound the most natural to me. While I like Jason Griffith’s shadow more than I like his Sonic, his Shadow (like his Sonic) does feel like he’s putting on a voice, which is exasperated by his cadence for both characters. While the direction wasn’t always on point for the Dreamcast cast, it was made up for by their voices and how they didn’t sound forceful. And in Heroes Humphrey was probably at his best.

While Jason Griffith will probably always be my favorite voice for Shadow, David Humphrey did a very good job in this game. I felt in Sonic Adventure 2, he was good, but not terribly special. I think he improved massively in Sonic Heroes, it's just a shame the game's story was almost non-existent and he hardly got much of a chance to shine. But hey, he still does a really good job here.

David Humphrey is the GOAT. Easily the greatest English Shadow voice we've ever had. He sounded like a mysterious badass, as he should. He didn't sound too breathy or too emo like he would would future voices. And that slight British accent he has really fit with Shadow's character.

This is why David Humphrey's/SA2-Heroes Shadow is my favorite and only Shadow that I like - he sounds like a calm, quiet, cool person that is likeable and that you feel like you could be friends with. This is especially significant considering he was the best friend of a young girl who looked nothing like him. I don't mind the other two VAs, but all I get from Jason's Shadow is that he's some badass edgy dude who's no fun and takes everything too seriously. And Kirk's, his Shadow is so gruff and dark, essentially the Sonic universe's answer to Dragon Ball's Vegeta. From what I can tell, both of theirs just diverge so much from what Shadow originally was.

Everyone looks at the dark route endings and get uppity over Shadow acting out of character when… that’s the point. He’s being manipulated to hate humanity like he did back in SA2. The memories that resurface in the Dark routes involve him being captured and imprisoned by humans, and Black Doom making him relive the GUN raid and Maria’s death whilst stoking his anger and filling his head with anti-human sentiments. It’s not even canon, yet people get so upset over the bad ending making Shadow act evil. Look at the hero routes: Shadow acts aloof, but when the chips are down he’ll help people without a second thought.

The issue with Kirk is, he's miscast (much like a lot of the Bang Zoom cast). He just doesn't work for Shadow very well, and while the voice is closer to the Humphrey/Griffith standard in Forces, it sounds kinda forced like he's struggling to get it out.
