One of the things that particularly struck me about the first level we hear this song on (which is Seppuku Station, and the first level in general), is just how bleak it is. I mean, sure, there are zombie ninjas and ghosts flying around, but, thanks to the technical limitations at the time, the fact that there weren't any pedestrians, corpses or crowds at what is supposed to be a crowded subway station, pushes the level into the "creepy" territory, real fast. The city skyline can be seen, and there are lights in the buildings at night. It makes you feel like you're fighting a one man war alone, not just because you are a lone warrior, but because it seems nobody cares about your struggle. The city's night life goes on, oblivious to the carnage and horrors occurring in one of its facilities. The station is darkened, shut down in places, filled with the roars of unnatural creatures. Mundane diversions are workable, a reminder of the banality of everyday life to contrast the current atrocities with. And on top of all that, this song. It's a magnificent song, but the fact that Lee Jackson wrote it this way, makes me think he knew some of that. The song is pretty slow for the standard at the time, keeping in line with the urban and oppressive nature of Duke Nukem's soundtrack (which he also wrote), but there is a minimalism here that underscores the lone warrior nature. There's a beat, and a driving bass line (which is limping along, splitting the bar in 5/4 and 3/4), but the melodic instruments feel almost alone, abandoned and small to the monstrosity of the marching beat of a monstrous swarm. They are the only instruments not patently electronic (I mean, this is all electronic, of course, but they seek to emulate organic instruments), and the only ones of asian descent. It's quite the powerful allegory of a lone warrior, with the power of martial arts and swordsmanship behind him, faced against the supernatural technological hybrid that is Zilla and its legion of undead. Evidently, I'm reading too much into it. But it's something that rattled around my mind for a while now. You DEFINITELY no mess with Lo Wang.

Shadow Warrior was 1 of those innovative FPS of my generation. It is a shame it didn't get the appreciation it deserved until now. The reboot follows along by making sword fighting a prime focus while introducing new stuff in the process.

As someone who was born in 1990, I am SO glad my Dad was someone who played video games. As an electrician, him and his workmates would install Doom (and subsequently Doom II) on their work laptops that they used for programming machinery and play it often. My Dad told me about how he would be playing Doom II after work when it came out, and suddenly would check the time and realise it was 2am. My first game at age ~4 was Spear of Destiny on his Windows 3.1 Toshiba Satellite (my parent's were split up at the time, and no WAY my mum would have let me play that), and I loved it. When we got our first home PC in ~1997 (the same time when my parents had gotten back together and a little brother was on the way) we got the Internet and he would download Shareware games like Duke Nukem 3D. We even did a Serial Link connection between his work laptop and the PC to play Doom II together, and I also managed to play Doom II with a friend from school over Modem which was exiting AF to experience and took us a good hour or so to get working... With having to disconnect the PC's RJ11 cable, reconnect the phone's one and call my friend so my Dad could tell him what to do, reconnect the PC's Modem again, "Dial Up", then host the lobby and pray it worked (serveral times btw) - well when that moment that we finally got into game together occured, and we could see each other and text chat etc, it was just mind-blowing (and probably the reason I am in IT today). Shadow Warrior was my absolute fave of all those Shareware games back then, and entire soundtrack takes me right back. Thanks Dad.

Too bad this game & Blood was only exclusive to PC and never ported to home consoles in the 90s. I would've liked it since I'm a fan of old school FPS games like Doom, Duke Nukem 3D, Quake, etc

I loved playing this game back in the late 1990s. It was a nice break from playing Duke Nukem 3D and Quake. It was the first video game I ever played where I actually liked some of the music in the game. The music added alot of atmosphere to the game. I did not run into another video game with as well placed music until I played "Freedom Fighters" for the Sony PS2 several year later.

Anarchic Doktor well its just stupid ass models that are like lumps of flesh .... they have no character or smart design.. the enemies in the original had pesonality .. looked smarter and was more intimidating and challenging ... why did they remove those awesome humanoid enemy soldiers?

They are both great (the new ones) but lack the political incorectness of the original, which of course is what makes the game. Duke mocks the american macho stereotype, Blood the horror genre stereotype and this, the Asian/kung-fu type.
