This was an excellent review. Video and audio were fantastic. Lots of tests and a full disassembly! This is an example of how it's done. This worked out good for ShadowDancer and JS Bladecraft. Thanks for teaming up for this! 💙

Joe as fan of your channel i wanted to ask you a simple Question what in your opinion what would be a kids first knife to learn on in terms of a fixed blade recently I’ve been looking into mora knives or Morakniv of Sweden I’ve heard these knives punch way above there price point at around $16 or $17 bucks for Companion in 12c27 stainless I was wondering if you would ever consider reviewing one and if you watch there Factory tour on youtube they grind all there knives with a robotic arm and have a fully sustainable knife factory.
@JoeSteel1Ай бұрын
there basic morakniv on Amazon are generally cheap, but some of there outdoor offerings are looking to be more robust built and start in the 40 to 60 range and go up from there...they seem like a good start...without going down a rabbit hole, if your looking for a fixed blade to start, something with a 3" blade, Sharp, dull can be more dangerous, with a guard to protect the fingers from slipping a weatherproof grip handle and a solid health preferred kydex...and teach safety and RESPECT for a sharp object...I would recommend for a folder to start with a slip joint to learn how to respect and be safe with a folder blade than move up to flippers and such, after that just choose a reputable brand and the sky is the limit.. WTG nomad edc or nomad Bushcrafter are great knives or some in expensive bucks to start...this can be a longer answer but I think you get the message

What do you think abt no bo hi? Best for maximum durability? Also i was considering a shadow dancer s5 but also the cloudhammer black lotus s5. Thoughts?
@JoeSteel1Ай бұрын
That is a misconception, BoHi doesn't weeken the Nagasa, to the point of making it less durable, it just lighter, there are other factors that would make a sword less durable, bohi is not really one of them....Shadow Dancer has better over quality and fit n finish than Cloudhammer, they are on a different level...but more expensive, although the S5 offered from CH are generally cheaper strong blades, and pretty tough work horses....thats the exchange...SD also makes a great user sword...quality, budget, price and usage are the factors to consider
@GrandmasterHobbyistАй бұрын
@@JoeSteel1 i mean you're removing material from the blade so it has to reduce durability to some extent thats just logical. Although it may not be by much, hard to know. Thanks for the input. My main concern is i have heard a rumor going around about shadowdancer lying about what steel youre actually getting :/ which is obviously very concerning

Nice. Ive made a few insanely expensive fantasy ones on there. Lol. If I had unlimited funds. Ive got their Amazon model coming tomorrow, and my girl bought me one for my birthday from swordis. Looking forward to both. Their amazon one is DH L6. Gonna be my first in that steel. Will definitely do unboxing/close ups/cutting videos on both of them.

@WaldemarvonanhaltАй бұрын
I'm curious: I've seen other people say that there's rumours coming out of Longquan that Shadow Dancer uses cheaper steels than the ones advertised (when customers order something like S5 or LD) so they can pocket the difference in price. Would it be possible to put those rumours to bed by taking the sword to someone with the necessary spectrometry equipment?
@JoeSteel1Ай бұрын
Don't we all wonder, A Spectrometer analysis would do the trick, but TBH the cost factor of the method, and shipping it out to a reputable vendor is WAY above my payroll in doing these videos. What I can offer is this, before I accepted any piece from SD I questioned ownership and those that know them, and was assured of their honor and integrity of their products. Next is how the swords look, if the metal darkens in time is a tell sign. Finally how well does the sword perform in accordance to what the steel is suppose to do. Visually even till know the Steel appears to be high quality, the steel cut and performed very well, I'm not The best most accurate cutter, Have not seen visual sets, chips or cracks through all the cutting and testing from my use. At This point I have reason to believe it is at least not of the quality that S5 is suppose to be. I will however will do more abusive testing at some point to test the shock steel performance, as i have done with other S5 steel swords. I also have learned that Rumors are most of the time started with misconceptions, non factual, assumptions, or from a place of jealousy. Knowing these steel testing methods are out there "should" have them think twice before trying to pull a "switch" a company could lose all its Reputation, integrity & business $$$.

Loose tsuba happen on nihonto too after cutting.
@JoeSteel1Ай бұрын
yes, I am aware, but doesn't mean I gotta like it...😀.most of these production swords have good friction fit, which is not traditional but also keeps them tighter when cutting
@jiokl7g9t6Ай бұрын
The looseness is a function of the habaki deformation from cutting.

💙 I just started training in Toyama Ryu two months ago and was allowed to start cutting tatami last week. Which Sensei said he usually makes students wait at least six months, but that I've shown impressive progress and the ability to safely handle a shinken. I have a 9260 spring steel ko-katana that I bought back in 2012 just because I liked the style and theme of it, also to do back yard cutting. But with a blade length of only 24" and a tsuka of 12", it isn't very practical for class. Especially since I'm 6'2" with long arms. I'm definitely going to save up and order a very nice S5 custom build next year.
