Smite actually is more like 5e Guiding Bold (Smite is really misleading name), Cleansing Weapon would be way more paladiny imo.

Yeah, Smite is still decent though because the good thing with Spells in Shadowdark there are not Saving Throws or AC's to beat etc. So As long as they cast the spell the target takes the effect. In the case of Smite it's a easy way to do D6 damage at range.
