Ugh I 100% agree with you about Magnus' line saying "I don't deserve that" about Alec and Lydia. When I heard it I literally cringed thinking ugh magus would NEVER say that in a hundred years LITERALLY. He is not that vulnerable and you're right in the show it feels like they don't even know each other well enough for him to feel like that.

I saw this on Tumblr, credit to @qanea. "Magnus made sure that whenever Alec uses his bow he'll think of him. Magnus just wanted Alec not to forget him." I think this is true. Magnus would never have taken Alec's bow and arrow, he just wanted to make sure Alec would remember these moments with him even after the wedding. And that's beautiful in my opinion. And the prostitute thing? No. I think Magnus was just joking as usual, Alec even smiled a little and you can see that he understood that Magnus wasn't serious.

"I want to be able to be like, 'This show is fucking awesome everyone should watch it!' Right now I would never say that. I would tell them that they should watch it because it's fun and I want them to support it and I want the show to get better. But if we're just complacent with how the show is and we don't talk about our opinions, how is anything supposed to change?" PREACH!! "I'm trying. I'm trying so hard to make the show make sense to me, and it's not making sense, it's just constantly going wacky!" Yes. Yes! YES! I just want you to know that I really appreciate these reviews. You have no idea how much I love this book series, and to see it being played around with, get's me very upset. Your thoughts always match mine, no matter how much I really hoped they wouldn't, because having them always match with yours means that I'm not just being picky about this tv show. It actually means that this tv show isn't doing the book series justice. I can't even respect the show because it's always changing its mind about things. And they aren't even big things most of the time. They're all little things that add up and transform into big things later on in the show! All and all, I won't give up on this series if you won't, but by the Angel, I sure as hell hope it gets its shit together for season 2. Sadly, I've accepted by now that Season 1 is a taste test and I sure hope season 2 morphs into a gourmet meal. BTW: Is it me, or have they not used the phrase "By the Angel" yet? I don't recall them using it.

In the alternate universe, they didn't show Jace as Clary's brother, even though she Jocelyn and Valentine were depicted as a happy family. If they were really brother and sister, they would be brother and sister in the other universe as well. Having lived there, the real Clary would have figured out that Valentine was lying. It's another dumb plot hole.

totally with you on everything you said about season 2!! also agree about it being rushed and millions of plot holes and doesn't make sense they need you as a writer tbh the second we had the shape shifting rune and then michael wayland is introduced, i'm like "oh this is exactly why" why wouldn't they take them to the institute either, which is what they do when clary needs an iratze in the first episode XD SO INCONSISTENT i understand how with that flashback they were trying to make us think that it is michael wayland, but you're totally right they didn't see it and it makes no sense THE "HE TRIED TO KILL ME" IS MY BIGGEST PET PEEVE OF THE EPISODE they totally had the simon and clary thing in the beginning but they completely ignored it for like 5 billion years and now that it's relevant to the writers again, they decide to put it in? I DIDN'T EVEN PICK UP ON THE WHOLE "YOU" CONDITION OF THEIR LAWYER THING OMG I HAVE TO INCLUDE THIS IN MINE BECAUSE IM SO MAD the clace kisses are so gross in my opinion "DEMONS I COMMAND YOU" i can't anymore "knock it off guys" I CAN'T EVEN HARDER does this shape shifting rune apply to ceramic cups now the sibling reveal scene was really close to the books! i'm very happy about it the script isn't just weird, it's just bad tbh lol LOVED THIS DISCUSSION

@MicukoFelton8 жыл бұрын
+1210Nique You might love him but you obviously don't really know or understand his character all that well. :)
@smol_chilli_pepper8 жыл бұрын
+micuko vicious you may assume whatever you like about how deep my understanding goes for magnus, everyone is entitled to their own opinion :) I just think that magnus is stronger in character and ability than the TV show writers are making him out to be. This petty, lovestruck magus is really off. I would understand if he knew Alec better but he doesn't. he's a high warlock but he certainly doesn't act like it.
@MicukoFelton8 жыл бұрын
+1210Nique I'd have to disagree. Showing vulnerability is something he chooses to do, it doesn't show weakness. It shows strength and courage. Being closed off from the world until he find his death, is that what he should do? Somebody who is weak and doesn't take risks, only that kind of person would do that. This Magnus isn't weak. He knows what he wants and he goes for it. And I'm sorry but book Magnus can be pretty petty as well. Go and read the books again or something.
@smol_chilli_pepper8 жыл бұрын
micuko vicious I too believe that there is strength in vulnerability and in being gentle but really when it counts. When you need to stay focused and when you need to keep your character intact. Good. I never said that he has to close off from the world. Magnus himself says that he chooses to love rather than turn hard from sheltering his heart from emotions. Fine. What I have a problem with is the way he goes about things. Also his actual magical abilities are being played down in the show. But whatever maybe I should reread the books, I've been meaning to for a while now. Maybe the show is poisoning me¯\_(ツ)_/¯
@MicukoFelton8 жыл бұрын
1210Nique Yes, I agree that when it comes to his magic abilities, he seems to have more magic prowess in the books than in the show. But the books made it seem a bit too... easy? This way it seems more natural, more realistic. Even so I think they've essentially kept Magnus Magnus, even with some changes he's no doubt Magnus to me. :)

+Tinking Pink When she stops being disgusting I'll stop pointing it out. She can say her opinion and I can't say mine? Sorry but there is a difference between constructive criticism and being a total bitch. Most of her points were ridiculous and bullshit. When something doesn't go the way the book does she is shitting all over it. And when they do follow the books she's 'well it happened in the book so I'm not surprised~!!' like wtf? There's no winning with her. And the show was made for everybody, not only book readers. So she might not be surprised but people who haven't read the books are and it's a good plot twist for them. Her way of looking at things is very narrow-minded and it pisses me off the way she hates and hates and hates. She's a hateful person.
@julz97178 жыл бұрын
+micuko vicious Settle down. It's one thing saying you don't like a show (which is completely justified cause it's pretty terrible) and calling someone a disgusting and terrible person. That is what being hateful and bitchy is, not sharing criticism that's completely valid. If you think her criticism is petty than you Cleary haven't read the dozens of other commenters who completely agree on any or all of her problems with the show. If you don't like her reviews than why are you here, to be a troll? No one is interested in what trolls have to say.
@MicukoFelton8 жыл бұрын
Saying you don't like a show is fine. Spending hours and hours on constantly hating it is not. I would settle down if her comments were valid in any way. But they're not. You ask me if I don't like her reviews why I'm here? Why don't you ask yourself if she doesn't like the show why does she keep on watching it? And shitting all over it? She's the troll here, not me.

Keep in mind that there's also people who haven't read the books that are watching the show. So everything that you know to be true from the beginning (Michael Wayland) isn't known to everyone else. Also, you said "it doesn't surprise me" referring to some plot point, but.. It's based on a book? So if they do something to surprise you, you'd be pissed off as hell because.. They changed something from the book?! :O I mean, yeah, I get if you complain about valid plot holes, fair enough, there are a few. And yes, some scenes are super cringey. But don't complain about them changing things, while at the same time complaining that you're not surprised about something they didn't change. Also, why are people so butthurt about the "I'll do you pro bono *wink wink* *Alec rolls his eyes*" joke?
@ruthraistrick9778 жыл бұрын
At the end when Simon was all upset about Clary and Luke's just taking it then as Simon leaves Luke adds that Clary and Jace are brother and sister and Luke and Simon are really happy and they do that eye thing and Simon looks overjoyed, that made me cringe a lot. It was like he didn't care about his bestfriend's feelings only about getting we her. It also made Luke look like ultimate Climon shipper.

I feel like they rushed the Malec relationship to get fans to watch the show. I've only read the first book, and I mean, there's some Malec, but not a lot. I feel like they aren't looking enough at doing book one justice, but they're trying to get fans of the full series by rushing things along. Also, I love your outfit! +NextDoorFangirl I think its good... If you've read the scene Cassandra Clare released about their first kiss, it was based around the end of City of Bones and the start of City of Ashes. They literally kissed then and Alec asked Magnus out on a date (the actual date is in The Bane Chronicles).
@erinella8 жыл бұрын
Trust me, if the show hadn't changed how Malec went and kept it like the books you wouldn't see anything at all to do with their relationship besides miniscule snippets. The show is actually giving their relationship development unlike CC did in the books where they are basically the token gay couple.
@sop_he_e8 жыл бұрын
+NextDoorFangirl Just saying although Cass Clare didn't put much of it in the books, they literally kissed before their first date and there was none of the "I want to be with him but I can't because I'm not supposed to be gay stuff" because Alec just went behind his parents to be with him. In the show, it's going slower than ever! Of course Magnus is gonna flirt with him! He's centuries old, probably bored out of his mind then this hottie comes along so of course he's going to want a little fun. But they've showed him GRADUALLY come to care for Alec which is amazing because we saw practically nothing of their relationship in the books, only that it was in fact a relationship. It hasn't been rushed in any way especially when you compare it to Clary and Jace's relationship.

SPOILER ALERT. The scene where Simon and Luke discuss about Jace and Clary being brother-sister, I expected Simon to be shocked and more than mildly hopeful, but not so out right excited. It's so out of character for both Simon and Luke from the books to be so happy about something like this when they knew how Clary and Jace would be devastated. Simon was jealous and hated Jace in the beginning may be, but this reaction was kinda sadistic for Simon.

For the whole Valentine not knowing they were coming thing, I think Hodge warned him. In this episode Isabella insinuated that Alec kinda told everyone that Clary and Jace went through a portal. And, I thought that Hodge contacted Valentine (because I assume that they're still in league in the show.) Then Valentine filled in the blanks (maybe he knew about the interdiminssional portal?) I don't know, I tried.

Okay, when Magnus wanted Alec as payment I think it was supposed to be his defence mechanism, because Magnus told Alec he hasn't felt anything for anyone in a long time and Alec went to marry someone he just met so Magnus was very hurt by that and he's hidding behind crude jokes and sarcasm. When Magnus said he wanted Alec as payment, Alec smiled and rolled his eyes so he probably understood it was just a stupid joke. I think Magnus wanted Alec's bow and quiver because he knows Alec carries them everywhere and that he probably grew to love them so when Magnus gave them back he was making sure Alec carries a memory of him everywhere. I do agree on everything else though. Love your reviews, I just saw the Magnus and Alec part a little differently.
@sophiecallcott41388 жыл бұрын
I've been treating the show and the books as separate entities, and it's really increased my enjoyment of the show, I don't have any preconceived expectations of what should happen. I can enjoy the characters more because I'm not expecting anything different from them (though Magnus's line at the end was creepy regardless). The plot isn't really bad- just different. Everything has plot holes, and I think (hope) that these will be explored in season 2 (also, Michael Wayland's flashback scene is a common TV trope- he's telling the story to Jace and Clary and therefore it's shown to us, for both tricking the audience and painting a better picture of the lie). The show has a different canon than the books, so the little (or bigger) things that differ don't bug me as much. The show doesn't really flow from episode to episode like you said, but that might have something to do with the show having a different director each episode, and hopefully that will change next season. Overall I really liked this episode (and many of the later episodes of the show) and I'm very excited for next week's episode and the season finale :)

the only part i genuinely loved in this episode was the conversation between Luke and Simon. their relationship feels real to me. the rest was predictable and kind of funny.

I understand that you like magnus from the books but you need to separate the book character from the show because if you do you can appreciate how magnus has fallen for someone for the first time in nearly a centuries and has formed a bond in which he wants to protect alec and help him out of his closeted state. I really think you would enjoy the show more if you separate your magnus from the shows magnus.

Urgh, exactly! Or she should at least think harder about what's going on on a deeper plane of thought rather than seeing it on the surface and kicking up a storm about it.

For the first time, I finally agree with you. I didn't think about how most of the fandom were too complacent about the tv show. I think we were just excited to have the show in the first place and are entertained by it regardless it being not as accurate as the books.

Spoilers for if you haven't read the book in this theory/possible explanation: The sneak peeks confirm that there's a spy in the institute. It isn't an outlandish idea that Hodge, who was around Alec, who tracked Jace to the Seelie realm where a portal was closing as he arrived, told Valentine where Jace and Clary and the mortal cup had gone. Valentine's a smart guy, he might have been able to put the pieces together and prepared himself to take advantage of the situation. Isabelle mentioned Clace's whereabouts to Alec while they were talking before the trial, so that he told Hodge, a trusted friend and fatherly figure, as well as Isabelle isn't hard to believe.

I really want to see Sebastian, but also if they choose to show when Clary finds out she can draw new runes. (I'm not sure if they already showed it but I'm pretty sure they didn't)
@jenniferjarvis16308 жыл бұрын
YES YES YOU HAVE EXPLAINED ALL MY THOUGHTS IN WORDS! My biggest problem with the show is that isn't consistent like they'll draw a rune one way and totally different way in another episode. I just wish they would stick with one way on everything so things actually make sense!

I think Christine needs to understand that this is an adaptation and not page to page from the books. The characters are older and different from the book characters. They all have different experiences, that's why they say things they maybe wouldn't say in the books.
@jupiter38098 жыл бұрын
+expabroad I think she understand that, but, really, the show is going to all wrong directions. I'm a fan and all, but the plot is coming out so messed up. I really really hope that they try to fix the fact that they're not evolving things, or even explaining. Sorry if my comment came a little messed up, but it's just my point of view.
@LoliceMe8 жыл бұрын
+expabroad She knows that. She's critiquing the plot of the show because it sucks and doesn't make sense, not just compared to the books but in general. They can't even keep their story straight from episode to episode.
@MoRgAnD1234567898 жыл бұрын
+LoliceMe But it does make sense... in the canon the show has created. They've changed some stuff from the books, so of course the book canon doesn't match 100%, but everything they've told us in the show (that means going SOLELY based off of what's been said in the show) it makes complete sense. This is why people say she's too hung up on the books. They've also gone through different things, as expabroad said.
@LoliceMe8 жыл бұрын
ThatCurlyHairedGirl No it isn't. How can you say one minute, nothing is stronger than the parabatai bond, and then a couple of episodes later, imply that it can be broken and weakened and really doesn't mean anything because if someone wanted to brake the bond, it can easily be done. Valentine was bonded to Luke, and just betrayed him like that. Same with Jace and Alec. So much for this bond they were trying to play up in the first few episodes. That's just one example of them not following their own damn logic. She is commenting on what they put in the episodes. She's not just basing it on how the bond is in the books, when they put that's how the bond is in the tv show during the first few episodes.
@MoRgAnD1234567898 жыл бұрын
LoliceMe In the show, the parabatai bond can be broken. That's just how it is. It still makes sense considering it's still something that binds the two together, and is something that shouldn't be entered into lightly because breaking it causes immense pain (I mean look at what weakening it caused). Strong relationships fall apart/weaken all the time in the real world. Why would parabatai be any different (Even Cassie mentioned there were different levels of Parabatai - Will&Jem and Jace&Alec for example. One pair seemed a lot closer in the books than the other)? Plus, technically the Clave can break parabatai bonds (Michael and Robert, hello?). It's not too strange for the show to take it farther by saying if trust isn't there then the bond weakens/breaks. Both book cannon and show cannon make sense in the ways they were explained, so don't get mad just because it isn't like book cannon. They still feel each other deeply just as in the books. I personally think about it as being a one time deal as well. So if the bond breaks, they wouldn't be able to get another parabatai. It would sort of be like the Clave breaking Michael and Robert's bond. It would feel like a void. That isn't something you would enter into with just anyone. (IDK, if that's where the show will take it, because they've only had one season, so maybe they will have their own way of explaining it later on, but for now, that's my take.)

I also noticed in the parallel universe how it's everyone living as if there were no Shadowhunters, and Clary and Jace were dating in that universe....the writers seemed to have forgotten that Clary and Jace would've also been brother and sister in that universe as well

I thought the same, but I don't think Hodge knows what they've been doing at all. he's been in the institute busy with the trial and helping Alec, and I dont think he had any contact with Jace for a couple of days? everything is so confusing!!

the biggest problem I had was when Valentine said he was both their fathers but we had the alternate dimension and jace and clary were dating, wouldn't they question how they're related when they obviously weren't then. switching dimension doesn't change your parents

You are so right!! The show, like so many other YA adaptatations, feels sooo condescending. I can see the writers go 'a well just throw in a good pop song and have the main characters kiss, that is all the audience cares about. They won't notice these plot holes!' I think they need to REALLY step up their game in season two. Right now this show is a mess and the writing makes me miss the days when Joss Whedon created amazing TV shows that catered to young adults and adults alike and that had so many layers and inticate plot lines that you could watch them over and over again. The world of the Shadowhunter Chronicles is just as intricate and multi-layered and wonderful. I am really disappointed in the TV adaptation for what they have turned it into. The only good thing I can find in watching the show is that I get to see your WONDERFUL reviews every week! Your reviews are so amazing, thank you so very much for all the hard work and effort you put into making your videos! One can only hope that Shadowhunters will start putting as much hard work and effort into making the show!

I'm really worried about what's going to happen in season 2. Hopefully you're right and the only reason this show isn't really doing very well is because of how much time they had. Now they have over half a year and they don't have to worry with as much casting as the first season, so I'm really depending on season 2.
@springdayisnottoday3718 жыл бұрын
What do you mean not enough time? The show was already planned on 2014! And then proceeded to cast characters on early 2015. Then the shooting began May 20 (somewhere May) and ended up August. They had 2 years to prepare. That's pretty long for me.
@fernandawritesstories27018 жыл бұрын
+xoheartyoona유나 This is kind of my way of explaining why this show has scenes that don't make much sense and for having bad lines without actually blaming the writers or director. If I convince myself of this than I can be more positive while watching the ending of this first season.

(I can't help but be distracted by your hair. It looks very pretty!) I agree with everything you say. For me, when I'm watching the episode, I think it's okay, but when you point out all the inconsistencies it really doesn't work. I really hope they look at all your feedback plus the feedback of MANY others to make the second season better. Just like you said, it really seems like they rushed the writing, doing what works for the episode. I don't know how they're going to weave elements from the future books but I'm hoping that they take more time. We're impatient but we do want good content.

@folklorevermore138 жыл бұрын
I feel like everybody hates the show because they keep comparing it to the books and movie. Shadowhunters is BASED on the TMI books. It's and ADAPTATION of the books. It's not going be exactly like in the books. Atleast they're still sticking to the major storylines like the incest plotline. If people just seperate the books from the show, you will enjoy it more. They're two different things now.

I actually love that they are so far away from the books because I really don't have any expectations now and I never know what happens. And I really loved the movie, even though it wasn't a good adaptation! But this show is ridiculous! It's too many plot holes and most of the actors took SO LONG to get into their roles and even now it sometimes seems cheesy and too much. There's many things I don't like about this show but it has nothing to do with not being close to the book. I don't even remember the book.

Magnus was so obviously joking when he said "You" and the reason he wanted Alec's bow and arrow was because at the end, he clearly planned to give it back to Alec and I think that was because he wants Alec to not forget about him. So whenever he uses his bow and arrow, he'll be reminded that technically it belongs to Magnus now (because he said Alec could hold onto it for him), therefore remembering Magnus.

i'm a little sad after watching this bc i quite like this episode. the disguise rune ,i think, is something that it's supposed to be obvious. it's how other characters handle the situation that's interesting. michael disguise explains why jace never thought valentine was his father. i understand that you get emotional bc you love the books and the characters so much. many things bug me too. but i just keep feeling sorry for the writers and other people on the team. they may curl up crying somewhere bc they thought they did good but people slam it down so hard. i hope they have more time to work on season 2 so that we can enjoy the better show

I think the whole "You." thing was more just Magnus' making an angry, uncomfortable joke. I almost think Alec wasn't too surprised by it, knowing that Magnus was upset and annoyed. I think the whole scene was uncomfortable more so because there was just a lot of awkward tension. I wasn't really bothered by those lines specifically though. Also, with the bow and quiver, I saw someone talking about this on Tumblr. They said that Magnus may never have had intentions to keep the items, but now when Alec uses his bow and quiver (which is obviously quite often), they will remind him of Magnus. I don't know if that's where the writers were going with that, but I like that theory. I completely agree that Clary looks absolutely ridiculous when she gets overconfident in her abilities. I cringe most of the time. But I was a little proud that she figured it out, because I'd like to see her not be so clueless all the time. But it should have felt a little more believable. I really appreciate your reviews and how much time you put into thinking about this show. Thank you!!
