Had no idea this was EVER a big band tune. We sang a really top-notch choral arrangement in high school. Thanks for posting, and thank you, Vitaphone, for all those dozens of the first music videos ever - an archive of many great performers and songs.

Love the big band era, and this sound. This song is a great political commentary--just think of the power of this song in 1939 with Hitler in power, and on the eve of WWII.

Lyrics in case you want them: "Shadrack" There was three children from the land of Israel Shadrack, Meshach, Abednego! They took a little trip to the land of Babylon Shadrack, Meshach, Abednego! Nebudchanezzer was the king of Babylon Shadrack, Meshach, Abednego! He took a lot of gold, and made an idol Shadrack, Meshach, Abednego! And he told everybody “when you hear the music of the trombone And he told everybody “when you hear the music of the clarinet And he told everybody “when you hear the music of the horn You must fall down and worship the idol! Shadrack, Meshach, Abednego! But the children of Israel would not bow down! Shadrack, Meshach, Abednego! Couldn't fool 'em with a golden idol! Shadrack, Meshach, Abednego! I said you couldn't fool 'em with a golden idol! Shadrack, Meshach, Abednego! So the king put the children in the fiery furnace Shadrack, Meshach, Abednego! Heaped on coals and red-hot brimstone Shadrack, Meshach, Abednego! Eleven times hotter, hotter than it oughtta be! Shadrack, Meshach, Abednego! Burned up the soldiers that the king had put there Shadrack, Meshach, Abednego! But the Lord sent an angel with the snow-white wings Down in the middle of the furnace Talkin' to the children 'bout the power of the Gospel Shadrack, Meshach, Abednego! Well they couldn't burn a hair on the head of Shadrack, Meshach, Abednego! Laughin’ and talkin' while the fire jumpin’ round Shadrack, Meshach, Abednego! Old Nebudchanezzer called "hey there! When he saw the power of the Lord And they had a regal time in the house of Babylon Shadrack! Meshach, Abednego! Oh, Abednego!!

Would have been cooler if skipped the lie of angel with wings in the fire. all these little places throughout history of man we added words to the perfection of God not taking care to be accurate. We don't realize how every word matters until we realize that the WORD is GOD in the form of words. And the Word was with him in the beginning, and the WORD WAS GOD. It hit me after years and years of studying, I loved the words, I knew the power but I kept searching for inconnsistencies, from the brain of the world looking for the things athiest and other religions claimed about the bible just being stories or contradictions. Not surprising that the one and only first religion that claimed there was one God and literally had God among them for a time is the only "reality" ever proven over and over and no matter the hatred or the lies about it the WORD of GODs against a wake of evil with prophetic truth coming true every day. ITs God's WORD or GOD himself, Jesus Christ that we must hold on to in this time and as our forgiveness as the WORD clearly states throughout old to new...THE KEY OF DAVID, the key to what? To God because Christ a descendant of David, a prophetic truth that is written in the stars as a King line born son of God is the savior of the people represented by the woman in chains, he loves her so, HIS CHILDREN?PEOPLES of the world but we are lost and lied to and only by BELIEF in the TRUTH..why every single word of the bible is or scripture, MASURA, looking back to really good bible helpers such as the Companion KJV written by EW Bullinger the most respected Christian Hebrew translator to date. A gift for us in the last days to bring for truth in the time needed to bring it all together. For too many years as a people of God we did love Him by Faith and few verses but never studying veraciously to pull out every truth we could for our lives, meaning of what and how to live to show ourselves approved. Satan took advantage of our ignorance coming out of those years we took God's WORD for granted as many stayed in the dark because our pastors and ministers, churches liked the power instead of doing what Christ taught to teach each person how to have a relationship with God personally, a Personal God because God is very personal. A parent is very personal, they know us better than anyone else and God is the ultimate perfect Father and tells us know this: how much more do I love thee than a human parent being perfect? I love my children with every cell in my body and every part of my spirit, and I am very imperfect, late every where, can do almost nothing right anymore and its horrible feeling...but then I remember God knows not only are we fallen we are fallen in a fallen world helping us fail and putting more stress on us from every angle, health, mental, financial, knowledge of truth and religious. God does not hold us accountable for all our imperfections in Christ, God our Father just wants our love. Shepherds Chapel. Dr Murray called these areas of knowledge and power, the 4 hidden Dynasties and its more true than we know how much they control what we do today. I feel very sad I was so naive to many things but more than likely had God not blinded me to some of it I would have given up hope I could change something and not worked as hard as I did to become educated and try to help. So much today its so sad how many people need help but don't want it, they want to stay right where they are and don't know what they are meant to be, how beautiful they are meant to be in Christ...this has been and is still to be a painful life of seeing us as humanity fail even though God said we would ahead of time so prepare to watch it and stay protected from it. Worst of all not knowing who we are in Christ, as God's children I think give satan a wedge of division but all we have to do is seek truth and God promises we will find it. To know who we are is a priceless gift no one can take away and it is to know that God made us and loves us and all of this is for us to save us from ourselves, our hard headedness, and to teach us in the only way most will listen (we are all different, some come sooner, some later-to God, all the same) by the hard knocks of life and show us what life under satan would be like as so many in first earth age, that 1/3 that always pops up in the bible followed him just for asking not realizing what they were even doing. God did give us several promises but one most critical to us or to me today is the promise of HIm helping us through this time that is the fire. Just like shadrach, meshach, and abednego, God wanted us to know it doesn't matter the fire heated to any level that we will see today...God will be in there with us and we will not even smell like the smoke of the very fire we were thrown into figuratively more that actually. This is the faith and peace and joy God wants us to remember for everything now and coming and that if we know to stay away and not bow to the antichrist, the instead of Christ ie Satan, the Dragon or Death himself, God sees that as the Mark of God IN our foreheads, ie the knowledge that we must wait on the true Christ and therefore no evil can touch us during the time Satan is here and we have a job to do. Pastor Arnold Murray, for instance in his reading from Revelation 12, the longest period coveredin the bible in one chapter is very awesome, every word read with him is awesome. There are special humble teachers that come around only by the grace of God and only so often...Pastor Arnold Murray is one of them as well as his son now beautifully graying also in his wisdom and beauty as a true Christian man of God. We need the teachers that know the whole picture and care to be accurate knowing they are judged first..we are our best when our boss is God himself, no higher standard than his to meet. Many blessings, God is waiting on every child, hoping they will turn to him...what a beautiful God we have. In Christ!

Hated this story as a child , hated this song as a child as I found it horrible - unfortunately 58 years hasn’t done this song any favours at all , horrible song , nasty, preachy delivery - some things are best left in the past and this awful song is one of them . I don’t care if the great LA wrote it and performed it , even the best writers have their off days . Wish I hadn’t seen this as I’ll have nightmares again as I did when I was 4 .

I understand that it's upsetting to think that someone would put someone else in an oven to kill them, and that the brutality could give you nightmares. I also have nightmares from brutality I have experienced in my life as a kid and otherwise. However, I find the song inspiring because it shows the people in the oven overcoming the brutality and their faith being rewarded. I feel like it's hopeful. For me it cheers me up, makes me feel like being happy about surviving things. Maybe if you looked at it like this it might not be so disturbing to you? You are entitled to feel however you want. :) I just try to look for the positive in things if I can find it. Also for me, the song is relatable because my own mom tried to kill me the same way the king tried to kill Shadrach, only she used a kitchen oven when I was 6. But in my case, my prayers I prayed that she could not even hear or see caused feelings of motherly love to overpower her which made her open the oven door before I died of heat stroke. I then crawled outside and hosed myself down with cold water. I heard her explaining again and again this unwelcome feeling of motherly love while trying to cook me alive in the oven to pedophiles that she was collecting money from to rape me, to try to understand what she considered to be a horrible thing happening to her. She wanted the pedophiles to tell her how to fight against any feelings of motherly love if they should ever overpower her again. I told her that it's not gong to work to fight them because no one is stronger than God, who came through for me because I prayed. She, of course, ignored me. This is an abusive woman with no feelings of motherly love whatsoever. So I am thankful for God being with me there in the oven and sending feelings of love her way that made her open that door. It's not like she had the capacity to have her own feelings of love. She is generally filled with hatred for everyone, including herself. I don't talk to her anymore. Too dangerous. She is still homicidal and I still haven't yet gotten her arrested. I have made plenty of police reports. But no one seems to care. I survived and I grew up. But it says in the Bible to "rest in the Lord" and "be patient and wait upon the Lord" so I have to just keep on living my life and when the opportunity presents itself finally maybe I can get her arrested for these many attempted murders that she has done to me among other violence. If not, I know where she will be going in the afterlife. Anyway, just try to see that some people might really like this song and find it totally relatable like kids who grew up with abusive homicidal mothers and fathers, Holocaust survivors, ISIS survivors, volcano eruption survivors etc. :) Have a good day, seriously. I honor your compassion. It's cool to be sensitive. :) I am one of the sensitives too. :) Oh yeah and here is a hotline that I can call 24-7 to tell my nightmares to so maybe you can benefit from it too CARDV 1-541-754-0110. Its generally for discussing abuse from your past and present to get moral support and validation, but they will talk to you about nightmares or other stuff if you want, it's a US hotline and you have a 20 minute time limit. I love them. :)
