I love the primitive sound like a mountain dulcimer. Perhaps the first way I ever heard Shady Grove, and I still consider it a fundamental tune that does fine with no embellishment.

Sounds like the US civil war music era... I love it! Thanks for sharing. I love the simplicity and dashing sound of the instrument and it also looks modestly elegant..

Ya think? Shucks I knew that but forgot, so thank you for reminding me Alan.. Are you on FOTMD? I'm going to get mine out now and do it.
@alanfbrookes97716 жыл бұрын
FOTMD? I don't know what that stands for. You could send me a "friend" request on Facebook. I've been building board zithers of various types for over 50 years. On Facebook I run the Early Music and Ancient Instruments group. I've never been content with 3 or 4 string dulcimers. All mine have at least 6 strings in 3 courses, but most of them have 12 strings in 6 courses. Check out my KZbin posting about Hummels.

Alan it's great to meet you. I used to play renaissance lute and the bowed thing I can't remember the name of at the moment tuned like a lute in a couple of renaissance groups. fotmd.com - friends of the mountain dulcimer - you'd love the community, especially a guy Ken one of our other greeters. He builds all sorts of instruments. The site is for instrument builders and mostly traditional dulcimer players but super nice people. It's easy to communicate there. I'm not on things like facebook, on the older side of things and fotmd is the only online thing I'm on. It would be great to have you there. Ken has built zithers too and you two would have fun I'm sure. Thanks for responding. You'll find me easily there and thanks again.

Like you, I'm getting on in years. Coming up to 73 in November. Living away from home on the other side of the world to where I was brought up, I find Facebook a godsend, allowing me to communicate with friends back home and all over the world as though they were nextdoor. If you don't participate in Facebook you're missing out on a lot. I share photographs of the instruments that I build, and recordings of myself playing them. I record one instrument at a time on a multi-track recorder and then mix them down into stereo. I have some postings on KZbin, but not many,

I love this so much I designed and built a teardrop shaped strumstick myself. It is tuned DAD. I practice daily. I was wondering how long it took you to be able to play this well. I am really amazed at your skill! Thank You!

To play Shady Grove tune your strumstick to DAC.
@-jank-willson2 жыл бұрын
DAD is major. To play shady grove, it has to be in minor, such as DAC. Maybe DAA would work?

that was great. it looked like you were only on 1 string. thanks
@lewdite5 жыл бұрын
Yes… all played fretting the single melody string. The other two strings are strummed unfitted and they act as drones.
@-jank-willson2 жыл бұрын
@@lewdite I thought with strumsticks, you fret all 3 strings together with one finger, since the strings are so close together? Because they are so close together, if you only fret one, your finger will rub on the next string over? At least, that was the way I was taught with the 'one finger method'. Walking dulcimers on the other hand, like the seagull merlin, you play with just the 2 paired strings fretted and the other 2 open, since the neck is widr, and there is more space in between the courses...

I love shady grove, great playing. I have just finished my mackymusic stick, I am wondering what the pattern is for your strumming. Are you using a thumb pick? Great music.
@lewdite7 жыл бұрын
I do not use a thumb pick, just my thumb. The pattern is unknown to me just my dancing thumb on the strings.

I am playing a standard strumstick and I am tuned F C D#. If you want to play this on the grand strumstick you tune it D A C.
