As someone that sells online, I only use three grades, High, Mid & Low grade. I consider High grade to be 8.5 and above, Mid grade to be 4.5 to 8.0 and Low grade to be 1.0 to 3.0, anything lower than 1.0 I will very rarely offer for sale. No one has ever been disappointed so far. Now I have been pressing and doing minor conservation work for many years now and I am fairly certain when a book can be improved with a press, but would never presume to tell people how much a book can be improved, as that has to do with the type of press used and the experience of the presser.

When I buy online I find that those who place a confident high grade , that's in general a $50 plus book will do multiple pics of front, back, corners, spine. I won't have to ask for more pics. Usually I don't have time to ask for more pics. I'll just move on.

I do that regardless of the value of the comic, prospective buyers NEED to know what they are considering purchasing! To quote Mike Holmes, "If you are going to do it, do it right."

100%. I still ask. If they do not respond with pictures, it could be that they just don't check their eBay messages, extremely busy in their life and forgot to check, or they are hiding something. I have had many sellers take time of their day to reply with photos. I would say 60-70% do reach out. For expensive books, it's a must. I love listings that has multiple photos. It makes it so much easier.

An officially graded book if fungible, in theory; though a grade may vary on presentability, the grade usually dictates the price in higher-grade books. The uncertainty has been removed and you can confidently say the grade, and work back by looking at sales of this grade to determine the worth give or take. A raw book is not fungible, each is different and uncertainty remains, even if the seller is well-meaning and tries to honestly grade it, it is just a guideline and will always carry higher risk, and as such should always be discounted.

Totally agree with your take. Its a NM- as it sits then thats how it should be sold. You xan say it would benefit greatly from a press, but he shouldn't expect 9.6 slabbed pricing for his raw. I have also decided i will no longer buy a book online if the seller won't take it out of the bag for photos. Ive been burned too many times

I agree that there are better ways of stating this. Per the sticker, seller could say "In my experience as a collector and seller this is NM- to NM, and with a press it should achieve a 9.6." and if the posted price lines up with the current FMV of a raw book between 9.2 and 9.4 the burden of trust is on the buyer. Some sellers are really good at assessing value. As far as why doesn't he just press and grad it hinself, it'll take a year to get that back from a press, clean, and grade from CGC or CBCS. And that wait is a good reason to sell it raw. He can get money now IF he leaves room for the buyer to benefit from the increased value of grading it. There was a time during co-v that you could get close to graded prices on raw books but that's definitely not now. I barely even sell slabs, but I would not take on the headache of selling raw books because of the wide range of interpretation and the hassle of disagreements. That said, there are sellers who post raw comics for sale with numerical grade estimates whose assessments I trust. And they sometimes include similar language to that in this posted example. But they don't price at graded FMV.

I agree, and the point about him "grading himself..." Honestly, just press it yourself at least. But the bottom line is the language, like you stated. It's that simple. Present your book with clear and honest language.

I know as a buyer and seller, i like when comic titles have an estimate on the grade so i can look for a range of grades and look at them myself to determine a grade. I bought a Moon Knight #1 listed as vg, looked at it, sent it in to cgc as is and got a 7.5 so it works both ways

$350 then the price of getting it pressed and submitted with zero guarantee it will be what he says... I'd rather just buy a book that's already graded.

I am just about to get my UF-4 back from CGC. I bought the book for $300.00 raw with around 9+ colorbreaking ticks. CGC still gave it a 9.6 somehow. This seller may not be far off from getting it around a 9.6 if they were to send it in.

If there were that many defects, and CGC gave you a 9.6, then CGC gave you a grade that is false. They've done it to me as well.

If u want a sure thing get it graded already !! If u hooked on that number get it graded!! And who is grading these books!! What’s there expertise what makes them know the difference between a 9.6 9.4 and a 9.2 cut that out

When I saw the thumbnail I immediately recalled an Adventure Into Fear raw issue I recently pulled the trigger on on Whatnot. The seller uses sticky notes on the cover to advertise the price. Upon arrival, the comic has another price written on the cover with permanent marker. It was hidden behind the sticky note, undisclosed by the seller. Which brings me to a Hulk 102 I purchased on Whatnot. Upon arrival, it had a store stamp on the interior title page, undisclosed by rhe seller. Disappointing to say the least.
@jheggemeyer
@jheggemeyer Ай бұрын
My gripe with Whatnot is not many sellers will take the time to pull the book out and go over the flaws. You have to find a seller you trust to put good grades on them, and who is willing to show off the flaws.

Last sale on a 9.2 was $330 and a fmv of $317. I don't see a problem at all with their price or wording.
@JernosComicsPopCulture
@JernosComicsPopCulture Ай бұрын
The asking price is well over the stated grade. $317 fmv isn’t $350 plus fees. Neither is $330. But hey, ask high. That’s fine. The wording is simply a lie. This book is not a 9.6 with a press because it isn’t pressed and no one knows what it will even look like with a press. Press the book and then call it a 9.6, and then ask $800 for it for all I care.
@TheCouncilofComics
@TheCouncilofComics Ай бұрын
@JernosComicsPopCulture honestly though you don't know if it is a 9.6 with a press. It could or it couldn't be. The fact is he wasn't asking an astronomical amount over fmv and he has the right to price it as he feels. Maybe he does feel it's a 9.6 with a press. Regardless I don't think it's worth attacking a seller whose just trying to sell his product. The price is fair it's not insane. Also leaving the seller name in your video is not professional at all in my opinion. You should really blurr those out. You can make your general point known without revealing their name and giving social media a target. Just some thoughts. Have a great day.
@JernosComicsPopCulture
@JernosComicsPopCulture Ай бұрын
@@TheCouncilofComics I appreciate your thoughts but I'm going to ethically disagree with you. First off, a seller's information is made public by the seller themselves and the public has every right to state concerns and opinions (unless it is accusatory of wrongdoing that could be defamation, which is not the case with what I'm presenting). Leaving the sellers name in no way crosses any professional or ethical line whatsoever. I do find it a bit of a cunundrum that you refuse to see what this seller is doing as 'unprofessional' yet you are quick to paint me as such. Just my honest feelings. And I feel like you are fishing now. First you said the price is FMV, but now that I reitterated that it isn't, your argument is "well it's fair and close enough." Again, the price isn't even the problem. A seller can price their product at WHATEVER they want. I always say that. AS LONG as they are being honest and not misleading. And your statement ultimately solidifies my point, but you are simply making excuses for the seller rather than owning up to the fact that he's being misleading on purpose. NOBODY knows what a press will do to this book, therefore, sell the book AS IT IS. Sell the book at a NM- 9.2, say it might benefit from a press, and then price it at 5k and I would have ZERO problems with it. Lastly, I actually was able to see pictures of this book outside of the bag. There are two color breaking spine ticks and a lot of stress on the backside of the spine and also in the black of the back cover, and also a corner ding. And I, as someone who has been professionally pressing for over 4 years, cannot say if a press will get rid of all of that, and it surely won't remove color breaks or dings. Honestly, in my humble opinion, I would question if this book would even bump up to a 9.4 with a press, and I think whoever graded it at a 9.2 was being a bit liberal. If you still disagree, that's fine. To each their own. But look at all of the comments on his facebook post, and also on this video. The majority of consumers will not trust a seller using tactics like this, and that is just a fact. Sell the book AS IS. Period.

First off, its a 9.6 in company's grading scale? How many years did this individual work for that said grading company as a grader? What Guarantee will he provide for a wrong assessment? This is a typically BS seller and a key readon for grading company's need to exist in the first place.
