Shaft lean at impact is one of the few things demonstrated by ALL great golfers. The ability to deliver the club at impact with forward shaft lean is one of the most beneficial things you can learn to do. Forward shaft lean helps to improve contact (as it moves the low-point of the swing further forward), it helps you to hit the ball further by reducing the dynamic loft delivered to the ball, and it helps to improve directional control by producing a more stable face to path relationship.
However, most amateur golfers are failing to deliver these desired impact alignments, instead “flipping” or “scooping” at the ball which leads to poor contact, low distance and random shot patterns.
Forward shaft lean at impact is described in The Golfing Machine book as the Right Forearm Flying Wedge (RFFW) which is is angle formed by the shaft and the right forearm. This alignment also typically sees a flat left (lead) wrist. Learn to do these wrist conditions, and you will learn to strike the ball more consistently, powerfully and accurately than ever before.
In this video, I will share one of the most effective drills that you can do to train this part of the swing. I will also use the Precision Impact training aid which is a device designed specifically to help train better wrist angles and shaft lean at impact.
