The problem is hypcorisy in US Foreign Policy. As long as the Shah was submissive to US, he was acceptable to them. Problem is with his Modernization Program, he felt emboldend and had a VALID ambition to tranform / reform Iran into a Great Civilization, because of that he made himself powerful enemies. This was also compunded by the 4 fold price hike in oil in 1973/74 (at the Shah's behest) and the multitude of interviews the Shah gave to BBC/ABC/CBS etc ( here on You Tube) where you can clearly see that he was(maybe even over-) confident of Iran's progress and transformation and investing into it, but also blunt and candid about US/UK's foreign policy shortcommings-double standards. He clearly voiced his misgivings, and criticized certain negative things about the US/West and Israel. This is what the West ( US,UK.France, Israel) found hard to stomach, by 1975 Iran had also the 5fth biggest army in the world, it was in the ascendy and economically (before crises hit, 2nd fastet growing economy in the world) it was reaping the windfall in oil revenue. Yes the Shah increasingly sounded like a Nationalist when he revised Iran's contracts with BIG OIL, and BIG OIL (BP) wouldn't have it so they lobbied very hard Washington and London to get rid of their ally the Shah. So what better way to suddenly become concerned about human righst in Iran ( Iraq was violating human rights much more even in 1970s, yet US/UK and Amnesty International stayed quiet, hmmm, what a paradox!) and label the Shah a tyrannt, and "help" a real religious tyrannt like Khomeini seize "illegally" power in Iran. Everyone ( US,UK, and Iranian secular opposition) thought Khomeini was just a good dumb retarded puppet to manipulate for their ends, but the puppet outfoxed all of them, he was cunning enough and turned tables on all of them. Thanks to this most cynical foreign policy of US/UK/France/Israel, Iranians had to endure 40 years plus of the most corrupted, retarded, regressive Religious dictatorship Iran, has ever seen, which effectively has critically wounded, retarded, weakened Iran for a very long time to come. US got what it wanted I guess in the end. Same like how they got rid of their erstwhile ally (real dictator) Saddam Hussein in 2003, after he outlived his purpose and when he also started getting ideas of his own. Fast forward to the 2011 Egyptian revolution, where US betrayed Mubarrak in Egypt again pressing human righst envelope ( how come human rights in Egypt never bothered them back in the 1980s/1990) or Libya, when US in public made amends with Gadaffi ( who actually trusted their word) as a new found ally in the fight against Islamic Extremism, only stab him in the back later on too . Look at all the turmoil now. It is known that with the fabricated Iranian revolution, yet another milestone was breached in speading turmoil, decay, instability and Islamic Fundamentalism into the region.

This interview sparked the first motives of conspiracy for UK and its western allies, which eventually led to the Guadalupe Conference: no support of the Shah, + support of Khomeini. The revolution of 1979 was not a people's revolution, it was an indirect support by US and UK, which brought simple and uninformed people to the streets. By supporting and returning the Shah during Mossadegh's time, the CIA placed the Shah in a position of "debtor" and "submissive" to US and its western allies. But with the passage of time, the Shah made Iran a powerful country with economic/military/political development, and this was not what US, UK and its western allies expected from the Shah . . . So the CIA created a "Khomeini" who would come with a "enemy of the West" mask and turn the situation in favor of the West. And also play the war scenario with Iraq so that all the military weapons and war planes that the Shah had previously bought from US are destroyed and Iran becomes a weak military power. And now, for 45 years, UK have been taking Iranian oil through underground transmission in the border oil rigs in Iraq for one-twentieth of the price set by the Shah. And even US takes that oil for free under the pretext of helping the security presence in Iraq . . . in a situation where Iran does not have the right to sell oil to any country due to economic sanctions during past 45 years. And this is exactly the situation the West expected from the Shah during the time of the Shah, but the Shah did not give in. Apart from the issue of oil, during the past 45 years, the existence of an "apparently" hostile and terrorist government in the Middle East region (Iran) has provided tens of political benefits for UK, US and their allies, that it is beyond the capacity of this page to explain. Nothing is what it seems!
@erhustudio83896 ай бұрын
Everything you wrote is true. But I don't believe that after Khomeini took office, he turned his back on them. Washington and London, knowing that Khomeini will play the role of the enemy of the West the best, supported Khomeini. The West needed a hypothetical enemy called "Iran" to use it as an excuse to do its tyranny in the world. The existence of a government labeled "terrorist" that has a religious face and can be called the leader of other Muslim countries in the Middle East that can indirectly protect the interests of the West. Moreover, during the last 45 years, the world price of oil has not increased much. Because Iran, which determined the world oil price during the Shah's time, has been under "economic sanctions" for 45 years now. (something that U.S. couldn`t do it during the Shah's time). In fact, during the past 45 years, no country has supported the interests of America and the West (indirectly) as much as Iran! In the last 45 years, the media of the world has indirectly given a "terrorist" face to the countries of the Middle East (except Saudi Arabia!). But all these media slaves did not ask themselves even once that "Why was the Middle East not terrorist before 1979?! Did Islam descend to the Middle East after 1979?!!"😁

It had absolutely NOTHING to do with the so-called "democracy", my friend. Nothing! It was only oil. O_I_L, it was, not "democracy". OIL. The late Shahanshah RIP was determined to rid Iran of the "Seven Sisters" (read: modern colonialism by West). He had clearly announced it and was vehemently pursuing that path. He was also the de facto leader of OPEC which was quite strong in those days. The West simply could not tolerate that. Thus, they literally caused his downfall at the hands of his very own ungrateful nation. Ungrateful and utterly stupid we Iranians were to fall in the trap of the super powers so easily. We betrayed our king and country and brought a fanatic bastard, Khomeini, to power, not even knowing what the heck we were doing. As simple as that. Yes, my friend. You think the issue was "Democracy"?! Think for a moment about Saudi Arabia then and even NOW! At the time the West was mercilessly attacking and undermining the late Shah of Iran, women in Saudi Arabia even did not have the right to DRIVE A CAR! What did all those "Champions of Human Rights" do about that??! And now, think about that murderer Mohammad Bin Salman who is the staunch ally of the Western politicians (the White House in particular). What is West doing about such GROSS violations of Human Rights?? Or, perhaps, it was only the Shah of IOran who had to be answerable to West?? Think about the despot regimes in the region, and in the whole world. Yes, my friend, it's outright RIDICULOUS to suggest that Iran, under the Shah, had a "poor human rights" record.

2 respected journalists ask the Shah (at 27 min) whether OPEC's price increase is necessary! What an asinine question from 2 capitalists!! Shah is too accommodating in this "interview" considering the fact that Iran spent a lot of the oil revenue buying American weapons! The Trump administration and the Media never ask Saudis any questions when it sells them a world of armaments. Did Mac Neil- Lehrer get the questions and directions from the Carter White House?!

he was smart getting all those American planes to this day they still form the backbone of the Iranian air force even the Vietnam era F4 Phantom which proved superior to Soviet Migs during Iran Iraq war of 1980-1988

He also ordered 200 F-16s. Combined with 79 F-14 Tomcats and the rest of the fleet including hundreds of F-4s and F-5s, Iran would've become by far the Greatest air power in all of Asia and would've operated one of the Greatest airforces in all of world. But the Ayatollah Khomeini canceled the deliveries of the jets. Such a disappointment.

i don't pretend to know all the facts. But it seems to me that we in the US made a huge mistake in not supporting this man to the fullest.
@russellfastnacht88114 жыл бұрын
I believe his health was rapidly deteriorating at this point as well and he lacked the will at that stage of his life to take the necessary steps to remain in power. I dont think for a minute that if the so called Islamic Revolution took place 10 years earlier that the Shah would have hesitated for a moment to crush it. And yes i agree that the Savaks brutal methods did contribute to his downfall. The point i was making was that after ousting the democratically elected government in 1953 and returning the Pahlavi dynasty to the throne it seems a strange time for the US to adopt a hands off approach toward Iran and abandon the Shah and Iran to their fate. Of course US foreign policy seemed and the Carter Administration in particular seemed haunted by the spectre of Vietnam which had only ended 3 years earlier Btw Capt777harris am I correct in assuming that you are British?
