Shahadat Imam Mohammad Al Naqi Al Hadi (a.s.) by Maulana Syed Mehboob Mehdi Al-Najfi
_________________________________________________________________________
Imam Ali al-Naqi al-Hadi (a.s.), the 10th Imam in the lineage of the Ahlul Bayt (a.s.), attained martyrdom on 3rd Rajab 254 AH (corresponding to 1st July 868 CE) in Samarra, Iraq. He was the son of Imam Muhammad al-Jawad (a.s.) and Lady Sumanah, and he assumed the Imamate at a young age after his father's martyrdom.
Circumstances of Martyrdom
During his Imamate, Imam al-Hadi (a.s.) faced severe restrictions and persecution from the Abbasid rulers, particularly during the reigns of Mutawakkil, Mustansir, and Mu’taz. These caliphs, driven by fear of the Imam's influence and his role as a spiritual leader for the Shia community, subjected him to strict surveillance, house arrest, and, ultimately, poisoning.
Most historical sources agree that the Imam was poisoned on the orders of Abbasid Caliph Al-Mu'taz. The Imam's growing influence among the people, especially his profound spiritual authority, alarmed the caliph, leading him to commit this heinous act. The Imam was reportedly given poisoned food, which led to his tragic demise.
Burial and Legacy
Imam al-Hadi (a.s.) was buried in his house in Samarra, which later became part of the Shrine of Al-Askariyyain, housing both him and his son, Imam Hasan al-Askari (a.s.), the 11th Imam. This sacred site remains an important pilgrimage destination for Muslims worldwide.
Contributions and Teachings
Despite the oppressive conditions of his life, Imam al-Hadi (a.s.) contributed immensely to Islamic scholarship and spirituality. His notable contributions include:
Letters and Dialogues: His written and verbal guidance on theological matters, jurisprudence, and the role of Imamate in Islam.
Refutation of Deviant Beliefs: The Imam confronted various ideological and theological challenges posed by the Abbasids and others, ensuring the preservation of pure Islamic teachings.
Ziyarat al-Jami'a al-Kabira: A profound supplication authored by the Imam that encapsulates the essence of the Imams' divine role and spiritual authority.
Persecution by the Abbasids
The Abbasid rulers kept the Imam under house arrest in Samarra for most of his life, limiting his interaction with his followers. Despite these limitations, the Imam continued to disseminate his knowledge through letters and trusted representatives.
Significance of His Martyrdom
The martyrdom of Imam al-Hadi (a.s.) is a stark reminder of the sacrifices made by the Ahlul Bayt (a.s.) in preserving the true essence of Islam. His life reflects steadfastness, patience, and a commitment to guiding humanity, even under the most challenging circumstances.
