This is nice for people who have short attention span and for super long boring but informative videos, but this is not that. we as viewers need to remember, our content creators rely on the views so they can be more present in the algorithm. Less views means less rewards for our creators, means less interest to keep up a channel, were missing out on good ones because we didnt helped the good channels to have more traffic. And I personally think this video is pretty good, cause I did truly used most of these things before I found this, so yea, I have a bunch of insecticides, sand and rocks that will be hanging out in storage. To make it short, please encourage viewers to watch the whole thing, after all as viewers that's all our contribution in the yt plant community.

This was a solid video thank you for posting. I'm realizing I may be a fungus gnat expert as I have been in every exact situation you described - I thought I uniquely dealt with diatomaceous earth ruining my potting soil! I have to say, I ended up at the same conclusions as you: I use neem and BTI and yellow traps. I am mainly commenting to suggest for you or anyone still curious what other methods are out there, hands down the best method I have used is nematodes. They are more expensive than any other option due to the fact they do not store well, so I generally use them starting from the day I receive them and attempt to water everything within the few days until I run out. They decimate the numbers. Like a incomprehensible amount compared to the greatest successes of Neem/BT. I don't usually leave comments or endorse products, but I just had to spread the word for anyone else attempting to cull the numbers on these pests. Any reputable brand works, just make sure the species are right. Steinernema feltiae are better for cold climates like indoor pots next to drafty fall/winter windows. Heterorhabditis bacteriophora are better for hotter climates that stay above 75 degrees F regularly (25C) so these are particularly better suited for summer greenhouses and grow tents. Best of luck to anyone reading this!

My experience with my two snake plants: I tried sticky traps, neem oil, mosquito bits, alcohol and soap mix. None of them worked. Here is what worked for me: 1) let the soil dry completely. 2) put 2-3 inches of fine grain sand on top of the soil. 3) bottom water the plant. Don’t pour water on the sand. Good luck out there!

yeah this is what i'm currently doing and the fungus gnats have no way of entering the soil, unlike what this video claimed. I can barely jam my finger in there when it's wet, it becomes like cement. My advice: ALWAYS quarantine new soil. Open it. Do you see gnats? Return or throw away after tightly sealing up the bag. If upon opening it looks safe, moisten the soil, close the bag and set aside for about 2 weeks. Open the bag. If it’s still clear, you’re good to go. Otherwise return or discard.

Often you don't see anything. The soil I bought had larvae and I didn't know until the plants were potted. So treating the soil you have with mosquito bit water is probably a good idea.

Easier way for me I have a pot I don't use for food put new soil in it heat it on the stove kills everything. Also you can put what you want in a plant pot just pour boiling water over it, another is put it in the freezer for a day or 2
@Rolandooo7 Жыл бұрын
Amen. All soil these days are contaminated that way, unfortunately... :( More expensive potting soils mostly as well, chances are lower and quality is usually slightly higher as they probably treat and heat up the soil longer and better but as with all pests....they are called 'pests' for a reason.... I don't find it worth their money (when you need a lot). I also think less pesticides use and climate warming is speeding up the rate of these kinds of pesky little pests too. I buy Cocopeat more and more and find it a very nice alternative! or mix it 50/50 with potting soil, works really great and cocopeat attracts NO pests at all (in my experience at least) and aerates the soil and keeps moisture under it better too. Great stuff. My WOW is; store the bags of potting soil in your basement or shed etc. CLOSED and tape all the tiny small openings on the sides so no air can get in or out anymore. Then leave them like that for a year (so plan to buy ahead and schedule when you want/need to repot so you always have a bag/bags ready). Preferably bag it in a large carton box too and close that with tape. Gnats will come out of the soil but have nowhere to go and all will die eventually. As with other buggers like strange worms and centipedes or vine weevil larvae (Hell NOOO) which are also a very very annoying pest these days.... check the box regularly, you will find the occasional dead insect(s) in it next to the bag which will tell you how pesky these insects are even that they've made it out somehow... only then after 1 year or so I use that bag of soil. Then still cook and treat it most of the time after inspection (for smaller pots and containers) because I've experienced that one nasty pest can simply destroy all your well cared-for plants or garden, especially if you have some special species (I have bamboos, ornamental grasses and acer palmatums which seem to be susceptant here) and also cost you a ton of time, more money and frustration to get rid of them afterwards! Prevention is key and will save you in the long run :)

The problem all of you are having is using sand and still watering the same way, you HAVE to bottom water and let the surface stay dry. Place them in a tray and fill it with water and let them sit in it for 30-45 mins they'll soak up what they need and the main top layer will stay bone dry making it impossible for the larvae to live in.

Best fungus gnat video! But that Ironide neem spray doesn't do anything, only the real cold pressed neem oil made into your own spray helps. And YES, terracotta is my #1 suggestion. Best video on gnats. I’m doing the mosquito bit/neem oil thing too. If some people are struggling with getting the oil to emulsify with the water, adding a little dish soap and whisking or shaking it up works. I’ve also found putting plants outside helps with gnats because the slightest breeze can blow the adults away. You’re right about sand, so I’ve put some of my plants in terra-cotta so they’ll dry out better. Like you, I don’t have the patience to bottom water. I hate gnats. They fly up your nose because they are attracted to carbon dioxide.

The following worked for the only major infestation I've had, and it later worked for a friend I told about it: I didn't try to kill the larvae in the soil, just to catch all the flies above ground, so they couldn't lay any more eggs and keep the generations going. First I observed for a few days where the spots were that the gnats typically spent their time during the day - typically at various locations on the rims of the pots. Then I hung a regular sticky fly strip (nothing specially made for fungus gnats) from the rod holding my shower curtain (I bent a paper clip around the rod to hand the strip from). I cut off 3 inch sections from the fly strip and put these in the places where the gnats congregated - the strips stick in place as long as they are balanced right. The gnats start sticking to the strips slowly at first, but after a few days the accumulation of dead gnats seems to attract more of them and the strips get completely covered with them. Leave the strips in place until there are no more flies flying around - at least two to three weeks, I would say, so that all the eggs in the soil have hatched, allowing also for another generation to have been laying them. I thought that if there was even one breeding pair left, it would start the infestation all over again, but that didn't happen. I think the correct location of the fly paper strip sections is the key thing.
@laurencebartlett44393 жыл бұрын
One other point: when you get the sticky glue from the fly strip on your hands and scissors, rub any kind of oil on it for a minute or so, and wipe it off with tissue. Repeat, and finally wash off any oil with soap and water.

Diatomaceous Earth- A convicted murderer 🤣🤣🤣
@RovingPunster2 жыл бұрын
Re: Diatomaceous Earth. It's a fossilized form of ancient plankton (eg., diatoms), deposits of which were left behind by the evaporation of ancient seas, and is now mined much like clay for various uses. It used to be used in winemaking as a clarifying agent, because it would bind to yeast and help it to drop out of suspension. As for bugs, AFAIK it functions by clogging their respiratory spiracles, because it is a very very fine clingy (adsorptive) and absorbant powder.

I looked through a few videos on how to kill fungus gnats today, and this is the best one. Thank you for doing the science and finding out what works and what doesn't! I will be buying mosquito bits to try and eradicate my own infestation.
@lesjf88322 жыл бұрын
FYI, you're supposed to soak mosquito bits at least overnight. I let it soak for 2-3 days, then water. Soaking for a few minutes may not release the bacteria or sufficient bacteria in the water. Before I got the mosquito bits, I started soaking my plants from the bottom only and left the top to dry out and this helped tremendously. I went from having an infestation to having two to only one gnat flying around every couple of days. So watering from the bottom helped me a lot. The larvae nest in the top of the pots and need moisture. If the soil is dry, this will also kill the larvae. With the mosquito bit water, I am watering from the top just to kill all of it, then will water from the bottom again. I also used hydrogen peroxide in the water but this didn't do much....doing it once in a while is good for the soil and the roots though, so once a year doing that. I also spray the leaves with a mixture of hydrogen peroxide and water to keep them clean.

Agreed, thanks for adding all the methods you tried. I tried a few of those and with little success. The Apple cider vinegar and soap did nothing. I even bought a little apple looking trap that basically had apple cider vinegar in it also and that did nothing.

Just now Ive watered my strawberry boxes with Mos. bit tea, and added cat shaped sticky traps. ITS ON!!!!! Thank you so much for this video, I really appreciated your tone and candor and humor.. you can really tell you truly Have tried all these, and this is truly how it worked/didn't work. Gives me faith in your method and Im excited to be helping my plants and not just spinning wheels getting pissed. Thank you for your experience and for sharing it!

From what I’ve read, the cinnamon along with chamomile is suppose to control fungus like cobweb mold which attracts mold. I’ve added cinnamon and chamomile to fresh seedlings to avoid fungus itself. But I have also added DE and neem meal in soil and top dressed with failed results lol

I'm with you 100%!!! I had the same experiences...tried everything everyone suggested on youtube and blogs, spending so much money and hours everyday to fight against those annoying gnats, but nothing seemed to work as effective as people say!!! I couldnt get mosquito bites here in Netherland though, unfortunately, and I did try to avoid using neem oil cos some people say the smell is unpleasant. After soo many attempts, I did end up with less gnats, but all of my plants' soil covered with DE and sands..kind of regret it. I hope they wont destroy my babies' growth. Nowadays, I just use the neem oil mixture to spray on the top of my plants' soil. So far, i only see 1-2 gnats remaining..hopefully i can be 100% gnats free before the winter end

Mosquito bits haven't done anything for me, but I'll try adding neem oil. If that doesn't work I'm going insecticide, I don't care, death to gnats. Fantastic video by the way, your charisma is through the roof.

100 percent petroleum jelly spread on yellow or orange paper will attract gnats and they will stick to the paper. Place paper strategically on plant surface. Just learned this from another you tuber. Will try that plus the information you gave in this video. Thank you.

@Reeganshay2 жыл бұрын
I’m not a person to leave comments but you cracked me up the entire time during this video. I swear I have tried every method that you mention except for cinnamon. I also use mosquito bites but one tip that I can give to you. Take an old pair of pantyhose and cut sections all the way up. Tie a knot at one of the sections put a little bit of mosquito bites in it then tie the knot after it’s filled throw it in your pitcher of water and cleanup will be so much easier for you. Best wishes with all of your house plants. And hopefully no more fungus gnats!

I just repotted my plants because their soil was very compact, I’m a beginner, lol So I used hydrogen peroxide to “clean”, the new soil, because I have a fungus infestation before and killed most of my plants, unfortunately the hydrogen peroxide did “nothing”!!!! Argh, most of my beautiful plants now have fungus infestation, because I did trust the “hydrogen peroxide disinfecting soil method”. Right now I just placed mosquito bits all over all my plants tops. I know it will get moldy, I’ll go through the pain of removing it, I’m desperate. lol Then I will use mix water method. Oh man! What a day 🌱 🪴 🦟
@huiyu7411254 жыл бұрын
@@jaquelinexsilva oh you'd wanna watch out for the concentration for misting and watering them. I have friends who killed their plants due to watering with high concentration of hydrogen peroxide. I really want to get lady bugs for pests, but someone in this household isn't a fan of bugs....

@@jaquelinexsilva another food way to ‘clean’ your soil when repotting is to bake it! Put it on an old baking tray or pan and throw it in the oven!

I have been super lucky by making a small mixture of that neem oil concentrate and water. Mixed into an repurposed small Rondele cheese spread container. Then fold up a paper towel and put it into the container to be your cloth. Then after I watering my plants, I rub the outside of the terra-cotta planters with it. I also have a spray bottle of the neem oil mixture and spray it on top of my gritty mix soil. It’s worked amazingly well, keeping critters away. It makes watering last longer but haven’t had to deal with anymore outbreaks of the gnats. I also had bought a few yards or translucent organza and some ribbon. I sewed organza covers for all my planters. Their beautiful cause I also included drawstring ribbon on the bags. Making your own, you can cover any size plant/planter. I use them from time to time. But the neem oil trick above works amazingly well :-)
