Time to leave the dock behind and shakedown our new performance catamaran. After a false start due to our watermaker and some strong winds, we finally were able to let Awen stretch her legs! We found many strange discoveries like our AIS not transmitting among other electronics problems, and inconsistencies in how our watermaker and refrigerator perform.

OUTREMER 52 OWNER’S REVIEW: www.katamarans...

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Hello! We are Holly and Stephane 🇺🇸🇫🇷
We have made the transition from full-time software professionals from the SF Bay Area to liveaboard sailing explorers who always keep one eye on the weather and our hearts in a song. Our goal is to complete a circumnavigation and we recently transitioned to a performance catamaran and are madly in love with our Outremer 52. We are working with Outremer in France (with the help of Google translate) to launch our boat project and start our journey as sailing vagabonds. While it’s not a race or speedtest, we are doing our first Bluewater crossing this year and we are excited to see AWEN stretch her legs and dance on the water. Join us as we share what we’re learning living without Amazon, (but with Starlink), and attempt this new life of travel and adventure on the ocean. Please be patient with us as we continue to improve our KZbin vlogging skills. Our goal isn’t to make our life a movie, it’s to give back to what others have shared with us, which is why we don’t monetize our channel.

Superbe traversée. Vous n’avez jamais barré ? Que du pilote auto ? Et les sensations de barre alors ? 😜😋

Great shakedown. And Corsica as a destination this time of year is chef´s kiss. The good thing about Outremer is that they'll stand by you and fix everything. They are outstanding like that, and are earning a reputation for top after service. Let's just say that Seawind, Léopard, Privilege and others could take a lesson. Last of the class is Lagoon, who still tells its owners everything that breaks, like bulkheads, is their fault....

We wished we could have spend more time in Corsica, especially at this time of the year, but we’re in shakedown mode so we’re focusing on learning the boat and testing the different attend so we can get the bugs fixed before the Atlantic crossing this winter.

Thank you Mathew. It's a fine balance to strike and good to have established rules so you don't negotiate with yourself every time. One alternative I have used in the past is to wear a belt lifejacket during the day, much more comfortable.

Hello, fantastic job on the videos and storytelling, really useful and interesting information. If you don't mind me asking, what prompted the choice of the external mounted hydro generator vs a Hybrid system on your main motors (something like Marine Hybrid system on a betamarine). I would have thought the extra redundancy and choice of having either side generate power from water recharging and/or running the motors in charge mode, and/or also could be used for instant motor on demand and the fact that the system would be integral to the boat would lead to ease of use?
@SailingAWEN
@SailingAWEN 6 ай бұрын
Thank you for watching! The simple answer is two-fold. First, we personally don’t believe these systems are fully proven yet and we had too many questions like would someone in a remote area be able to fix it. We plan to do a lot of bluewater and we just wanted our engines to be as predictable and fixable as possible. There are so many systems on these boats already so we wanted to keep this pretty simple. Second, Outremer isn’t doing this mainstream yet on their boats for a reason. They have their own philosophy about simplicity and maintenance and so between us and them, we couldn’t get comfortable with putting it in our boat at this time. The best solution is to be efficient with power management. Of course we can run the engines if we need to top up and the Watt and Sea works good during passages when we need the instruments on all night. Hope that helps. 🤗

@@SailingAWENHello, I really appreciate the in depth and thoughtful reply, it was very helpful and very informative. (Also incredible turnaround time on that reply! 👍) Its been really interesting investigating the different approaches cruisers sailors are taking on this front. Firsthand feedback from those operating the systems is always invaluable and given some of the impressively comprehensive spreadsheets generated during the planning process of AWEN I'd imagined it was a an area of interest you spent extensive time researching. I also found it of note that you mentioned Outremer's philosophy of simplicity was part of what lead you to choose your setup, which appears to be a contrasting viewpoint to I believe the HH groups boats which seem to be embracing the Parallel Hybrid Drive train.

@allen5362 with boats we’ve found it’s often the case that something on paper is great but may not match reality in practice. I’m very interested to see how these systems perform over time and the engines meet or exceed specs. It would be great! Typically we are early adopters to things. We got SEA.AI early and like it so far but it’s not a critical system, it’s more a layer of security. What can’t be understated is the mental toll of worrying about something that is a critical system, like having a proven powerful engine that can power through a tight cut against waves and current. I don’t want to have to worry about that, I just want it to work. -Holly

Great work ! About depth sensor, you know it's limited to 100m, and depth is over 2000 m during the crossing. About AIS, it could be wise not to expect ferries to avoid you, even with a proper working transducer ?

Great video guys, love that you flew the Asym all night on your very first overnight with the boat! If you don't mind me asking, what is that yellow line going right through the cockpit at 12:10 blocking door to the saloon? Shakedown looks like it's going great so far : )
@SailingAWEN
@SailingAWEN Жыл бұрын
Thank you. Good eye… definitely not an Outremer setup 😀 I was experimenting bringing the asymmetric sheet on the starboard side to have great visibility to actively trim it. The angles happens to work quite well. Side benefit is when on watch from the salon I can quickly pull on that line when the asym collapses. 😁 We’ve already crossed back from Corsica to the south of France… this boat loves to eat some miles, so much fun to sail.

Hi, love your channel and your podcasts, can I ask what navigation software you are using on your nav station monitor in this video? And is it linked to your chartplotter etc for gps? Really interested in this setup for our own boat,,, fair winds x
@SailingAWEN
@SailingAWEN 11 ай бұрын
We are using Octopus by Adrena, it's not linked to our chartplotter, but is connected to the GPS. We mostly use the Octopus for everything, to connect to weather routing, etc. and the chartplotter we use more for tactics or short passages, along with Navionics on an iPad nearby as a second source - so essentially we have three charts to check if needed. Octopus links in with our sailing stats and sail plan and refines the data as it learns our polars over time. The features are really great because it helps us understand ways to get more out of the boat, our sails, or more out of the time window we may have give the weather. The interface is meh (not a technical term) but we are harsh critics as we are both from the software industry so. Everything about sailing is about tradeoffs :-)

Great video and boat! What size Ultra do you have? Also curious why at approximately 4:50 you are out in rain vs moving helm down below and closing the sliding door?

Thank you. 35kg ultra. We were anchored just outside the La Grande Marina marina so we didn’t bother but for a longer trip we would have definitely tilt the wheel inside and lowered the cockpit tent.
