There's something so wonderful and special about Shaker music; once you've heard these songs you can't really get them out of your mind. Many modern ensembles which specialize in early music have been attracted to these simple but haunting (and perhaps beautiful because they are so simple) hymns, and as much can really be said of a great deal of early American hymnody as well.

Well, their doctrine does say that Jesus had been reincarnated as an English woman called, "Mother Ann" which was pretty shocking for the time. The Shakers were treated as strange, but were mostly left alone, unlike other Communities like the Mormons who were burned and driven out of three states by mobs and government militias.

Freedom of religion in America, and in the 19th Century it's interesting how this group embraced celibacy, and the Mormons practiced polygamy. I would think it hard to get converts in a religion that didn't marry or have children. The Shaker tune, Simple Gifts, is lovely although it isn't in this video.

Nope. Shakers and Quakers are different groups. The Shakers got their name for shaking during worship. However, members of the Religious Society of Friends were called Quakers because our founder, George Fox told his followers to “tremble at the name of the Lord."

All that dancing and hard labor left them too exhausted to be tempted to get it on with the opposite sex....also the dancing would be an outlet for the frustration they experienced with the oppressive lifestyle the cult led; kind of like "Two Minutes Hate" rally that the inner and outer Ingsoc party members went to to vent their emotions.....
