Chaturmasya Vruta Information courtesy : sripathi rao What is chaturmasya ? Chaturmasya usually starts from Ashada Shudda Dwadashi and ends on Kartika shudda Dashami. The months of Shravana, Bhadrapada, Ashweeja, Karthika fall under this period. During the four month period, certain food items are restricted. The vratas are named after the item that is prohibited during the month. So, the names of the four vratas are
1. Shaka vrata (No vegetables and fruits)
2. Ksheera vrata (No milk)
3. Dadhi vrata (No buttermilk)
4. Dvidala vrata (No pulses)
During the vrutas, it is believed that he abhimani dhaityas will have more presence in the food which are restricted, hence consuming these foods will result in increase in more thamas guna (darkness, destructive, chaotic) in the body and thoughts. Control of senses The vrata imposes restrictions on the food. This is with the intention to reduce our dependence on the external material world and concentrate on the spiritual aspects. This is a great way for achieving control over the senses and a way for better health.
