The tour of the Mongoose was Shakira's first super production, it was the first time she performed in Europe, and her first time in most of North America. When the tour arrived at Latin America people were impressed with the stage, lighting, and Shakira's performance. It was the first time a latin woman did something like that... A spectacular show! 💖

One of Shakira’s musical trademarks is bringing in Middle Eastern flavors to many of her songs, but Ojos Así is definitely her ultimate tribute to her half-Lebanese heritage, and it even features some Arabic lyrics (the chanting you referred to). To address some of your other points and questions, and share some other facts: 1. This song was actually the first time she brought her now-signature bellydancing into her career. She was very rock-focused before this song, but ultimately, Ojos Así in 1999 would be foreshadowing for her bellydance-focused crossover with Whenever, Wherever in 2001. This performance was from 2003, the opening number of her first world tour after her crossover success. 2. If you check out the music video for the song from 1999, you’ll hear the “Single Version”, which is a bit more electronic than the actual album version from 1998 (which is a bit heavier on the Middle Eastern influence, but still more electronic than the live version you just saw). That said, as you noticed, the live version takes the song’s Middle Eastern vibes to a whole other (and more organic) level. The 2006 tour version even starts with a classic Egyptian song as an intro. 3. I’m not sure what you were hearing that you thought was a synth, particularly during the dance break. But the string instrument was indeed a violin, as you noticed (a very popular instrument in Middle Eastern music, used in a very distinct way), and I believe the other instrument was a mandolin of some kind (giving a sound similar to an oud, but not exact). I’m basically an expert about this song (and Shakira’s music in general, but Ojos Así on another level), so let me know if you have any questions!

This performance is actually from “The Tour of the Mongoose” / the snake is actually a symbolism, mongooses are known to attack Cobras and kill them. I believe Shakira just wanted to portray her take on “el Bien y el Mal”

Correction... the mongoose tour was an amazing production, starts backwards. The cobra was spitting her out..Shakira was the mongoose on the show. Explained towards the end of the concert on a video montage if I remember correctly. But yes good vs. evil

Emilio was the producer of the album. He and Shakira are both half Lebanese, so this song was important to both of them. Gloria wasn’t involved, though she did translate the lyrics for the English version.
