Ah! Finally someone clearly explains how it's done for beginners. As most things flute, it has an embouchure component to it, not just head movement. And some other air magic I suppose. I still can only get a semitone of inflection before I lose the sound, not a whole tone as you demonstrate. I guess practice practice practice. Any tricks to expand my range? Thanks for the video.

CuriousMarc thanks for your comments. No shortcut for expandeding the depth of your meri technique. The main thing is finding the balance between tension and relaxation within your embouchure through experimentation. First focus on getting the correct pitch with a very light breath. After you start feeling control then see if you expand the volume and fullness of your meri notes.

@@KochikuShakuhachi Hehe. Like the classic flute, no miracles for embouchure subtleties. I’m getting better already, I was already somewhat meri in my “normal“ tone.

Hello Steven, my previous question no longer has to be if the different tiny symbols to the right of the score notes represent meri or kari nuances if that's it then my previous question on chat and your answer quarter note .. ..all lights up good day with the time difference

No these are not meri or kari symbols...just rhythmic indications.
