Just For You, Low Temperature HP Crockpot
Formula by Valerie Mosher, January 12 , 2017, edited Jan.13, 2017
ALWAYS make sure you put through a Soap Calculator before using! I soaped this formula at 38% lye liquid and Super Fatted at 5% upfront and added 2% SF after the cook. Used Sodium Lactate at 5% of oils and I “did not” discount this amount from my lye liquid, And I added the Sodium Lactate to my lye liquid when the temperature of the lye liquid was around 112F (I usually like to have my lye liquid around 125F when I’m doing low temperature HP in the crock). I also used tussah silk and 1 tsp fine sea salt in the lye liquid and dissolved “before” adding the lye. This was a 2lb batch.
Formula for 2lb batch:
Castor Oil - 13% = 4.15 oz
Coconut Oil (76 deg) - 15% = 4.80 oz
Olive Oil (100% Pure) - 25% = 8 oz
Palm Oil - 27% = 8.65 oz
Shea Butter - 20% = 6.40 oz
Total lye liquid = 12.25 oz *** I used 5.25oz of distilled water and added 1tsp fine sea salt and a bit of silk to this first and dissolved the salt then I added the lye and dissolved and when it was cool enough I added 1oz of Aloe Vera gel/juice and the sodium lactate
Sodium Hydroxide (lye - NaOH) = 4.3 oz
4 ounces of sugar free Coconut Milk - after I added the lye liquid to the oils I added 2oz of the coconut milk and after the cook, when it was Vaseline stage I added 2 more ounces of coconut milk.
3 ounces of Aloe vera gel or juice (I added 1 ounce to my lye liquid when it was below 120F and I added 2 ounces after the cook
1 tsp fine sea salt
Tussah Silk
1 tsp. White Kaolin Clay - I added this to my warm oils and stick blended before adding my lye liquid
2% more SuperFat after cook = 0.65 oz, I used Apricot Kernel Oil (you can use what you like)
2 Tbsp white sugar mixed with 2 tbsp water, dissolved and added after the cook
1 Tbsp maple syrup mixed in with sugar water and added after the cook
2 Tbsp Greek Yogurt (cold or room temperature) (added after cook, last, but before the FO)
FO/EO of your choice
---- This formula will give you numbers of 39 Hardness, 10 Cleansing, 59 Conditioning, 22 Bubbly,
40 Creaminess, 60 Iodine, and INS of 140. The added sugar will give great bubbles, and the coconut milk, greek yogurt will bring extra creaminess. The Aloe vera gel or juice is great for the skin. The sodium lactate and sea salt will add extra hardness. The lye liquid amount for this 3lb batch, at 38% lye liquid, was 12.15 ounces of liquid (I used 12.25 oz). And broke that up into 5.25 oz of distilled water to mix with my lye. Plus 3 ounces of aloe vera juice or gel. Plus I used 4 ounces of Coconut Milk (no sugar in it) added 2oz of that in with my oils to go through the cook and added it hot. Then added the other 2oz of coconut milk after the cook (hot). I also added 1 tsp of white Kaolin clay into my heated oils and stick blend until smooth “before” adding the lye liquid. My lye was at 109F and my oils were at 135F when mixing to bring to trace. Came to very thick trace very quickly. My crock pot was on “low” sitting. Once it was at thick trace I covered with plastic wrap and put cover on and let set 20 minutes until it rolled over and was Vaseline stage. I checked for zap, there was none and I added all the extras except for my FO/EO and blended completely. Re-covered with plastic wrap and let set 10 minutes out of the electronic crock part.
---- Then I added my EO/FO and separated into heated containers and layered in mold, swirled and put in freezer for 4-6 hours, take out and let sit 1 hour in fridge before cutting.
**** you don’t have to add the coconut milk, aloe vera gel or juice (you can use all water), You don’t have to use sodium lactate, sugar, maple syrup, yogurt, kaolin clay, those are extras I use. And you can Super Fat 7% right up front or add it all after the cook as well. Hope you enjoy!

I've had a few times where I've had big messes (where it volcanoed everywhere) and I felt extreme panic for sure!!! but, I do try to roll with it, and I have learned that the batter does not have to be pourable to make a great design, it just has to be manageable, and then of course I've swirled some mighty thick soap, like a ocean brine soap and still managed to get a swirl. The thing is not every time will work out perfect and then you go from there, I just truly like to have a "great for the skin" soap, high conditioning and low cleansing/stripping type of soap for the body, and I love putting a lot of good things in there too! The way this one cooked was a bit different because I had about 62 percent hard oils versus 38 percent soft oils, so went to real thick trace, and folded over right into Vaseline stage. I like to save some of the amount of liquid used for my lye and add after the cook, and adding yogurt at 1Tbsp per pound of soap really helps too, the sugar water as well, it all goes along to help have a more manageable batter. Dear Friend - I followed your recipe almost exactly and was so pleased with the results. (omitted silk and SL) It traced quickly, despite the fact that I did not use a sb. I only spoon stirred it. It remained moist and fluid after the cook - it was perfect. Pouring it into the mold was a breeze. I used what was left in the crock pot and made a soap ball with it. Great lather! Thank you.

Hello Janet, I love soaping and I love using my soap even more, but after 6 years I still have soaps that are really just plopping them in, and when I have those, you just have to deal with it the best way you can, and if im using individual silicone molds , then I will always heat them up as I find that helps them some - but, the main thing to me and it always has been from the beginning is to make great for the skin soap! big hugs and thank you again so very much!

Hey michelle b! you are so very welcome, thank you for stopping by and i'm so glad you tried this and that even though you didn't use the additives which I did (and they are not necessary for sure) that you found it to be lovely on the skin and that the lather was good for you!....you can always save some of the total liquid used in the formula to add hot after the cook, for example use enough water etc for the lye amount and then use some of the total liquid in coconut milk, say 1-2 ounces and add hot after the cook, that can help! big hugs

Hi Valerie, I have been enjoying your wonderful videos, you are an awesome teacher! I'm new at this & have had success with several CP soaps thus far. I know that if I tried this using the colorants you used, my soap would have been a success, however I tried using some clays (mixed with water) as the colorants (all I had on hand) and the soap wound up drying & hardening rapidly. No way to attempt swirls. Plan to rebatch. I did make a small ball out of some of the soap and wow, it's absolutely amazing...it'll be a terrific rebatch soap, haha! I'm definitely going to retry this one with colorants that will hopefully work better for me. Do you have any suggestions as to how I could have used the clays & had them work out ok? Thank you and your husband for these videos, they're wonderful learning tools for those of us just starting out on this soaping adventure.

Hello Bonnie MacGlaflin - thank you for watching and thankyou ever so much for those very kind and supporting words, i'm so glad my videos can help in any way! I've used clays many times, i.e. French green clay, kaolin clay, pink clay, bentonite clay, red Moroccan clay --- I usually mix mine say 1/2 tsp to 1tsp and mix with a teeny bit of glycerin and then about 1tsp water, I let them set on my stove by my heated water so they can be lukewarm when I go to mix them --- I always heat up my containers that I will be separating soap into, and cover with plastic wrap, also heat up my spoons and swirling tool if using. You can always mix 1 tsp of hot water into your separated containers if they seem to be too thick;, and you can also have a spray bottle with warm water in it and a couple of sprays on top when layering soap, but not too much. Remember just to cook until Vaseline stage and make sure that all the lye is used up-, then add your addtiives etc.

Hey Diane! Take your time and enjoy... I do find that HP does retain the scent better, but you can definitely SF as you please, I normally always SF some up front and then add the rest after the cook with choice oils, but you can use what you have in the soap as well. Sometimes I super fat all up front, it jus tdepends which soap i'm doing, how i'm feeling that day, lol, etc. You are so very generous and kind with those encouraging words and I humbly thank you, i'm still learning too, but hope that these can help in even a small way, big hugs

lovely channel first time watching and just subscribed, the soap even in doubt it still came out beautifully, the lather WOW! i'm kind of scared to use castor oil in soap because of the hair growth factor it has, being that i don't want body hair, i wonder if lye gets rid of those properties, what does silk do for soap?

Hello DivineSpiceLab, thank you for watching and for your kind words. Once you mix the lye with the oils and butters, it becomes a different product, basically a salt product, and the lye saponifies the oils and butters, so now you have soap, you just get the great properties for skin from those. I've been using castor at a high percentage for over 3 years and have never had a problem with hair growth. Silk is "supposed" to give it a more silkier feeling a glide to it, but you can also add kaolin clay to help with that, or you can use rice milk or tapioca powder. I believe the silk is not necessary at all.

Hello Hippy Nerd, thank you for watching and thank you for your very kind encouraging words, I really appreciate them. When I'm using log molds I normally put them in the freezer or fridge so they harden quicker, so I can cut quicker; you don't have to put them in there at all. But one thing it is good for is when you are using a lot of liquid, say 40% or above that, then putting in the freezer helps them not to sag in the middle. But for this formula or any formula using 38% lye liquid, I'm pretty sure you wouldnt' have to worry about it sagging in themiddle. The extra tbsps. of water and yogurt are not really that much, and if you have a fairly hard formula say at 38 or up for hardness and 138 and up for INS, there is no worry, and using 5% sodium lactate really helps that hardness too, along with the tsp of sea salt. I have found that most of my soaps are ready to be sold in 2 weeks, some in 1 weeks and I've had a couple over the years that took about 4 weeks. The other thing I found interesting is that one time I cut open a 3 month old soap and it was moist inside, not wet, not soft, but still moist and I have found that with some CP's too. A lot of milk liquid , I have found to take longer to get hard, but then again, your formula plays a big part in that as well. I read where someone did a 35% lye liquid HP and it worked great for them, but I've never tried that yet! Thank you for your question, and it is sure my pleasure to help and share if I can.

I tried this today, my first time doing HP. Not sure how it will turn out, but it just never (20 minutes+) seemed to reach that vaseline stage. Since it was at trace, and past, I figured proceed ahead and add extras, then put it in the mold. It looks pretty good, but tomorrow will tell it all. Any suggestions on this experience? Hello George Moertel, thank you for watching and for those very kind generous words of support! Was your crock pot hot enough? crock pots can differ in temps between models and even the same models. When soap comes to a trace, it will harden up "before" going through stages. I t should cook hot enough so that it bubbles around edges, and then eventually work through to the center. But, you can stir it up as well. Maybe the crock needs to be a higher heat. Did you cover it with plastic wrap? make sure you check your soap so that there is no lye left before using it. Some formulas will take longer to cook then others, maybe your soap just needed more time. But it should always go to Vaseline stage. Maybe you could email me with the particulars, i.e. formula, water %, add ins, what temp your lye and oils were before stick blending, what temp your crock was on etc. and that way I can see better what happened.... or if you try it again, Please do :-), then take pictures of the different stages and then if you need help I can see the pics..... You are so welcome for any help these videos give, and don't give up , keep trying and take a look at other HP soapers videos as well, Kimberley McNutt has some great ones for beginners as well. It's always good to check different ways and find the one you like the best. thank you again, big hugs

Hi Valerie: Sandy here. Tested the soap I made 1 week ago and it tested at #8 (ph scale) the day after it was made. Soap looks quite nice and I'm wondering if it did go to vaseline and my inexperience with HP didn't recognize it. If I can figure out how to shoot you some pics, will show you how it came out. Yesterday, tried a second batch. It clearly turned vaseline like. It never volcanoed and just took its time turning to vaseline, slowly folding into itself., never stirred it until completion and kept plastic wrap on the top. You may have hit the nail on the head thinking it was the crockpot. It needed to be turned to( high) to get the action going, then, it would be lowered to medium. The second batch was nice and flowing and with your instructions, it could be called a success. To me, HP seems to take more planning than CP but, it certainly has advantages, too. I make more mess with HP. Maybe, with time it will become a bit less so. Again, Valerie, your videos were the best viewed to understand the process. If it hadn't been for your easy to follow instructions, my soaps wouldn't have gotten made. Except for the rougher top it looks like Cp inside when cut... A big hug! Thanks.. Sandy

Hey there Sandy, your post makes me so very happy; sometimes it takes a bit just to get to the exact place/stage. You don't have to volcano to get Vaseline stage by any means, and truly letting it roll over on itself until it's all Vaseline is a great way to do it. I still use that way once in awhile, so nothing wrong with that at all. Crockpots work differently and i'm glad you got it to work for you, sounds to me like your a fast learner for sure!
