Korean documentary, narrated in English, about ancient folk rites which marked early religious practices in Korea and are still observed in some parts of the country. We see exorcism rituals involving childbirth and different phases of childhood, as well as wedding rituals and funeral rites, including the "washing exorcism" to calm the souls of the dead. The term "exorcist" is used interchangeably with "shaman." Many of the exorcists shown in the film are women. Many of the ceremonies are reenacted for this film, which was made, I believe, sometime in the 1980s, possibly earlier.

It’s interesting to see the mudang in their socially indispensable light, because I understand that shamans are otherwise considered to be a polluting profession, for reasons I have yet to appreciate. Also, there’s something about the copious use of paper in the exorcism ritual especially which speaks to the seemingly universal attribution of spiritual qualities to paper: paper currency is also burnt in China for the deceased, as far back as the Tang Dynasty the deceased wore funerary clothing made of paper, and the Maya historically burned blood-stained paper in necromantic auto-sacrifice rituals.

True. Shamanism shows a common source of growth for ancient humans. There's a lot of similarities among the shamanisms and animisms around the world.

It's basically indian version of shaimanism and it is the most important part of the culture of uttrakhand (himalayan state of India) called jagar......main rituals take place at night using drums and bronze plate for the music, worshipping local deity of the villagers or calling their ancestors for guidance..... it's very fascinating that you would get goosebumps.

@Haua-wz8jo Ahhh........ don't worry you can come again anytime and witness it. This tradition is not going to demise anytime soon in uttrakhand as it is the most integral part of the cultural identity of uttrakhand's people. It's something so important that no matter where in the world you are you have to comeback to your village to worship your clans deity and ancestors to seek their blessings and guidance......and even today when their is a problem in family be it realated to anything people will still ask their ancestors and clans deity for the guidance. Next time just ask your uttrakhandi friend to show you jagar and have a whole new experience....😄😄

We can find shamanic influences is korean buddhism, chondo-gyô and even in modern korean christianism. Have you see the banners with "thanks to God" in hang-ka (ideograms) alphabet? You will see them in front of presbiterian, episcopalian and catholic churches in all South Korea. I knew a pastor of assembley of God in Taegu who put personally a banner like those in his church. And members of his assembly supported.

Not really. No Misogi, There is Animal sacrifice, noisy and crazy music (Japanese shrine music is calm and relaxing), possession dance, singing to communicate with the dead, crying aloud, the shamans get angry and hysterical etc etc..... lots of differences, besides Korean shamanism isn't even a specific religion and as such it can't be recognized by the Korean state , the name already states "Shamanism", an umbrella term for Korean spiritual practices held by shamans

@@technocrats5887 there is no trance dance in tohoku, they are more like spirit medium communicating with the dead (as you see in the west) in and animal sacrifice was once shortly practiced in Japan under the influence of Chinese quid pro quo rituals, in 791 an edict forbade farmers to slaughter animals as sacrifices to (Chinese) Taoist deities. As you can tell there is no animal sacrifice in ryukyuan religion either and they are more a primitive and archaic form of shinto
