I was in middleschoolmath class, I had to stay behind for an hour to do catch up work after a long absence. My teacher called in my homeroom teacher and I heard them muttering in the corner going over a couple kids' homework. Math teach asked "does this look like copying? It looks like they just changed a couple words." And Homeroom responded saying that absolutely was not those kids' normal style of work. I had to hold back my side splitting laugh. I let my friends copy me, but we were smart enough to make sure we showed alternate and personalized methods of making our conclusions. This guy's the most careless plagiarist ever. (Not condoning plagiarism, and I don't do it since I'm not a kid in math class, but pointing out that he could have gotten away with it without anyone knowing.)

Hi there, professional 2D animator here - This scandal has pretty much ripped through my entire industry and community because of the extent of plagiarism this guy is guilty of. Some of the people I know have met this guy, who passed his work off as genuine, and got away with it because people didn't realize what he was doing until now. There's no excuse for what Kevin Bao did, and he should be held up as an example of what you must never do in our craft. Also as a side note: Re-animating someone else's work is not unheard of WHEN IT IS CREDITED OR HAS PERMISSION. (It's also okay to copy existing animated work to study or learn, so long as you do not steal credit for the work - studies of other people's work are okay when you say it's a study and give proper credit.) Disney used to recycle its own animation in different productions all the time - and that's fine because Disney owns the work and can do with it what they want. If Kevin Bao had gotten full permission to re-animate stuff with his own style, it would also be a very different story - but this is a guy who built his career pretty much on wholesale theft. No excuse. Oh yeah, one way this guy could have saved his bacon is if he didn't trace the stuff he was 'copying' and just riffed on it from completely different angles and shit. He could have also shot his own live-action reference and then used that as a basis for the animation, with the stuff he wound up 'plagiarizing' merely used as a point of inspiration rather than something to be traced & stolen. I think he thought he could get away with what he was doing because he used enough of his own surface style to cover up what he was doing - but that was NOT enough. You can pull inspiration from things to create your own original spin on an idea, but you should NEVER STEAL WORK. (And if you do use someone else's work, get permission!)

I also animate. Yeah it is obvious. But we act like he didnt put any body of work into it. There is a clear double standard i see here. Music tries to as you call it "plagiarize" artists - that's ok we just call it inspire, video games "borrow" aspects and mechanics from eachother. I understand how much work animation is. But yet again- we act all upset and asif he just pushed a button. Saying none of the artwork is original work is laughable. Thats still hours of work.

@@PusoSkateCo We animators know what work goes into the timing and posing of animation; the posing, acting, and physical feel of all of that is a lot of hard work. The surface-level drawing Kevin did in his own 'style' is the icing on a cake he stole (by very evident tracing, I might add) rather than baked himself. He stole the guts of what we do and put a quick coat of paint on it.

ehh... so we going to need to credit everytime somebody do a gainax/sunrise pose, shaft tilt, itano circus, yutapon cubes, what ever the hell studio trigger is churning out call, etc etc etc? other then what trigger is doing since their style is so experimental/unconventional that it could be call a signature, most of the example shown here are pretty conventional and over used in some expect that calling it an intentional plagiarism is a little reaching. using them as a reference sure but calling plagiarism is a little hard if it isn't for the Disney ties.

As soon as I saw the clip copied from the SU movie, I immediately recognised it as Spinel. Did it never cross this guys mind that copying a very popular animation that loads of people are guaranteed to have seen, would result in him getting caught through people recognising that very unique movement?

Well, yes and no. They paid top dollar to have a good artist to do that work. The premisse was original work. That, obviously, wasnt what they got. They were respectful of that, and took it down as soon as they realized they've been scammed. Probably now they're doing their own investigation, not for just the PR statement, but to seek legal ways to deter future smart asses to do the same. For them, suing the company who connected them and the artist is not even a drop in the bucket of money that they get yearly. But it makes the message crystal clear. Probably because of this, future artists will be more scrutinized than before. Or they'll not look as much for outside work, keeping it in-house to prevent these issues. So it pretty much fucked up the good freelance artists who dont want to be tied down to one company. Either way, Sony did what a self respecting company would do. Quite sure the PR message to answer this will be devoid of all soul and morally ambiguous, but that's what PR messages usually are.

This reminds me of a similar situation I read one time where someone made royalty stock images of VHS tapes. He later found out that those images were used without his permission as part of the cover art for the Stranger Things season 1 BluRay sets. He reached out to Netflix about this, asking for royalties cause it was his image, especially since he was a broke college student and the extra income would really help. Netflix told him that they had a third party produce the sets, and apologized on their behalf. They gave the creator royalties for the sets as well as a copy of the box set in question. It was the best possible outcome and I'm glad the guy got the royalties for his work.

first thing I thought when I saw the first frame thumbnail was "oh I bet it's prolly just gonna be similar" Nope, it's definitely plagiarized, it just looks like drawing over lines and changing things up a bit, but ultimately, you can't change movement without doing the hard work. I know this because I do this myself quite a lot when I make animated gifs for memes, lol. It's how you can make an original meme yet keep it recognizable to something. I assure anyone having doubts animations itself cannot just be a coincidence. Art? Sure, sometimes it can, poses? Nathan Thom You’re only partially correct. The ownership of the fan art rests with the creator. If the copyright holder of the original work it was derived from wants to use it for profit, they still have to make an agreement with that creator. That the fan art is derivative protects the artist from an immediate lawsuit. That said fan art can also even be sold for profit, legally, like with prints. As long as they are substantially transformative works, people are allowed to make money off of their own creative efforts. The holder of the copyright of the original property doesn’t automatically own copyright on all derivative works. This is very much a legal gray area decided most often in court, but only when lawyers actually think it’s close enough for a case to be made. So yes, Disney stealing fan art *is* theft of that work. Whether or not individual fans have the means to go up against such a large corporation in court is different. As a matter of practicality, the difficulties involved in that are what allow Disney to get away with what they are doing, and not any sort of legal footing. They are the biggest bully on the playground and they know it, so they use that power to get away with breaking the law.

There was a time in a recent job, I had been promoted to another role and was backfilling my old one. Part of the old one was organising events for the division. I spent quite a lot of time organising Melbourne Cup day lunch for the office. Had to go to special places around the city to get different kinds of food to also cater to some people's dietary requirements. Arranged additional catering, setup the room, booked it in everyone's calendars, setup games. When i was about finished and gonna tell the boss of the area its all ready, This one girl That was in my team carried a single plate of food from the kitchen and placed it in the room where the boss was and she completely took credit for arranging the whole thing. The boss sent an email out to everyone afterwards thanking her for all her efforts and mentioning me as assisting. I told her good work for setting it all up and she looked me dead in the eye and said it like she genuinely believed what she was saying "Thank You".
