Hazrat Umar ibn al-Khattab, commonly known as Umar al-Farooq, was the second caliph of the Rashidun Caliphate and a close companion of the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him). He was born in approximately 584 CE in Mecca, in present-day Saudi Arabia. Umar is highly revered in Islamic history for his wisdom, justice, and administrative abilities.
Before his conversion to Islam, Umar was a strong opponent of the Prophet Muhammad and the early Muslims. However, his life took a significant turn when he accepted Islam in the 6th year of the Islamic calendar (616 CE) after a powerful transformation of heart. His conversion had a profound impact on the early Muslim community and played a crucial role in the spread and establishment of Islam.
During the time of the first caliph, Abu Bakr, Umar served as one of his closest advisors and played a pivotal role in guiding the young Muslim community. Upon the death of Abu Bakr in 634 CE, Umar was elected as the second caliph by the consensus of the Muslim community.
As caliph, Umar was known for his strict adherence to justice and his commitment to upholding the principles of Islam. He made significant contributions in various areas, including governance, military affairs, and social reforms. Some of his notable achievements include:
Administrative Reforms: Umar established a centralized government, restructured the financial system, and improved the administrative apparatus of the state. He appointed capable governors and administrators in different regions to ensure effective governance.
Justice and Equality: Umar was known for his just and fair judgments. He treated all citizens equally and prioritized the welfare of the less fortunate. He is particularly known for his statement that even if a dog were to die hungry on the banks of the Euphrates, he would be held accountable for neglecting his duty as a ruler.
Expansion of the Islamic Empire: During his caliphate, the Islamic empire expanded significantly through military conquests, including the conquest of the Persian Empire and parts of the Byzantine Empire.
Social Reforms: Umar introduced various social welfare reforms, including pensions for widows and orphans, and organized a stipend system for the poor.
Codification of Islamic Laws: He established a system to record and compile Islamic laws and teachings.
Umar's caliphate lasted for ten years, until he was assassinated in 644 CE by a Persian slave while leading the prayers in Medina. He is remembered as one of the most exemplary and just rulers in Islamic history, earning the title "al-Farooq," which means "the one who distinguishes between right and wrong." His leadership and contributions have had a lasting impact on Islamic governance and jurisprudence, and he remains an influential figure for Muslims worldwide.
