Check Seán Ó Sé & Mick Flannery out tonight Friday @ 21:25
Tá fear Bhéal Átha Leice i mbun amhránaíochta agus siamsaíochta le breis is 60 bliain -- ach is le Ceoltóirí Chualann faoi stiúir Sheáin Uí Riada a thuill sé cáil ar dtús, is dócha. Is óna leagan spreagúil den Phoc ar Buile sa tréimhse sin, a thuilleann an clár nua seo a theideal.
Iconic traditional singer Seán Ó Sé hosts a unique night of music and song with family and guests. Made a household name by his definitive recording of 'An Poc ar Buile', Seán has spent 6 decades in the public eye entertaining generations with his wide repertoire of traditional and folk songs. Songs like Carrickfergus, The Banks of My Own Lovely Lee and Beidh Aonach Amárach are among his life-long favourites and are included in this concert.
He is accompanied here by family and friends such as Mick Flannery, John Spillane, Jim Murray and Peadar Ó Riada.
Seo anois é i gcuideachta a chairde, Mick Flannery, John Spillane, Jim Murray agus Peadar Ó Riada, ag ceol, ag comhrá agus ag cuimhneamh ar 'na laetha a bhí'.
Múinteoir dílis ab ea é chomh maith le bheith ina phearsa poiblí agus ina amhránaí agus ba dheacair dó uaireanta, an dá a fhreastal, mar a mhíníonn sé sa gclár seo.
In the programme, Seán explains his choice of songs and talks about his childhood in Ballylickey in West Cork and how his talent for singing eventually led him to collaborate with his good friend, the late composer Seán Ó Riada.
Seán recalls his life serving two masters -- his job as a teacher, which he says always came first, and his singing. He traces the way his best-known song 'An Poc ar Buile' has been his passport to the world and gifted him with a singing career which has spanned six decades.

Great to hear this song, they sing it very close to Sean McCarthy's original words.

Ah, gorgeous, to be sure. Seán Ó Sé has a voice and style steeped in history, and this goes well with Mick Flannery's more contemporary feel. Wonderful moment.

Pihasanddunes1 Could not have said it better, they really are great together. Would love to hear the full song sung by Sean OSé, he has such a pure voice for this song. And Mick Flannery's guitar is so good. Brilliant stuff.

The words are so appropriate this year, the 100th year of our freedom. Les us remember all of them who fought and died for our freedom, not just those who fought but those too who were innocent victims of Bloody Sunday too. God be with them. These are the words, written by Sean McCarthy from Listowel. The cold winds from the mountains are calling soft to me, The smell of scented heather brings bitter memories: A wild and lonely eagle up in the summer sky, Flies high o'er Shanagolden, where my love Willie lies. I met him in the winter time when snow was on the ground The Irish hills were peaceful and love was all around. Scarcely twenty years old, a young man in his prime. We were married, darling Willie by the eve of Christmas time. Do you remember Willie, we walked the moonlit road I held you in my arms, love, I would never let you go. Our hands they were entwined, my love, all in the pale moonlight, By the fields of Shanagolden on a lonely winter's night. Then came the call to arms, love, the heather was aflame. Down from the silent mountains, the Saxon strangers came. I held you in my arms then, my young heart wild with fear, In the fields by Shanagolden, in the springtime of the year. You fought them, darling Willie, all through the summer days. I heard the rifles firing in the mountains far away held you in my arms then, your blood ran free and bright, And you died in Shanagolden, on a lonely summer's night. But that was long ago, love, now our son grows fine and tall; The hills they are at peace again: the Saxon strangers gone. There's roses growing on your grave, there's an eagle in the sky , Flying high o'er Shanagolden, where my love Willie lies.

The first few times I listened to this I thought Mr Flannerys minimalist singing style was self indulgent,,,now I think it is a good counterpoint to Mr O Se, The lyrics are extraordinary,,,they have the simplicity of diction yet complexity of imagery that remind me of the Corpus Christi Carol,,,what is the eagle,,,who is the Saxon Stranger,I cant believe this song is modern ,,,,is the tune traditional,,,is Shanagolden a place in Ireland,,,where,

Yes it’s an old traditional song, Shanagolden (or ‘Seanghualainn’, which in The Irish language means ‘Old Shoulder’) is a small village located in County Limerick, Ireland

Oh great, Google,,,tell me the symbolism of the eagle in Shansgolden, Is it a symbol a motif an emblem a heraldic sign or is it an allegory a parable a fable,,or just your average bloody eagle, Google who/what is the falcon in the C, C, Carol,,,scholars have been debating that for 200 years,,but fuck scholars

TG4,,,thank you, To a non European like me Irish music now looks astonishing,,the innovation the depth the quality, Is my perspective wrong, Did people in Greenwich Village in 1961 know there was a miracle happening; I,B,,,,thata a rhetorical question Have you and/or RTE done a documentary about this

@@michaelboylan5308 We haven't made a documentary about this although that is a good idea, as far as we know no station has. The Clancy Brothers and Tommy Makem toured the states and may have sung this during their many performances in Greenwich Village in the 60's.
