I've done that a few times, haha. In earlier versions of the game you could defeat Wizards by destroying enough of their minions but I'm not sure if that's still enabled. It would cut to a scene of the wizard getting hit with a ray of light when you won a duel and a red notch would appear on their staff, so if you destroyed their whole staff they'd be defeated same as if you beat their castle directly.
