The old man who stops them in traffic was the star of the original movie -- which ended with him vainly doing this, trying to convince people "they were coming."

And that scene was shot on the street I lived on. If you look closely, you can see me waving out of my apartment window.

Uhh..... spoiler alert..... I've seen it, but the reactor hasn't. Maybe it would be thoughtful to remove this spoiler before he sees it? Do what you want; but, it just seems like it's most fun to watch a movie when you don't know major plot points beforehand, or characters' outcomes and so on. Just a thought.

Personally one of my favourites. I grew up in the early to mid 80s watching lots of films or tv shows with darker endings. The 1968-1982 era was the period for downer endings.

This movie scared the crap out of me when I saw it as a kid, the ending in particular. That SOUND they make!!! *shudders* I really enjoyed your reaction! "It was a Stratocaster with a whammy bar....!"

Great movie, saw at the drive in back in 78! Classic, thanks and the original is good also, Kevin McCarthy starred in the original and he’s the guy in this one screaming in the street about they’re already here you’re next! So kind of could be sort of a sequel, anyway thanks !

My favorite of the several versions. Could never look at Donald Sutherland (RIP) the same after this. He also starred in a similar themed film, "The Puppet Masters (1994)," worth watching and not to be confused with more recent films with similar titles.

If you ever want to watch another great movie with Donald Sutherland playing a major role in it check out "Kelly's Heroes", it's loosely based on a a true story but the Hollywood rendition is quite entertaining. Other actors in that movie are Clint Eastwood, Telly Savalas, Don Rickles and Carol O'Connor.

20:19 _"They Live actually have so much to say about our society... which doesn't happen here."_ While he to my knowledge never expressly said so himself. It's long been taken for granted that Don Siegel, the director of the 1956 original (which this is a remake of), did intend it as a societal commentary and a warning about the then Communist threat, which at least in America also saw Communist infiltrators in society trying to spread it, and as the Communists did want to erase various societal and individual differences in favor for "one hoard", so to speak, it could fit. Don't know if that's what Siegel actually intended, but that's always been the interpretation about his movie. All he to my knowledge said himself, was that he intended it as a subtle warning for people to not become sleepwalkers. P.S. By the way, Don Siegel actually has a small role in this remake, as the pod cab driver., while the guy that played Matthew in the original is the man shouting "They're here!" that gets hit by a car.

This is an excellent movie. Perfectly cast and executed. The 1993 version of this story just called “Body Snatchers” is worth a look as well.

Good reaction. You look at an interesting range of movies. Enjoyed your commentary on how good this movie looks. A lot of movies of the 1970s had a very lush look. Philip Kaufman, the director, and Michael Chapman, the cinematographer, emulated film noir elements from the original black and white movie, particularly in the use of light and shadow and the angles from which scenes were filmed.

I totally agree that some of the line deliveries are obviously dubbed, that's interesting that you noticed that! I've always thought the same thing! It's nothing major, I still love the movie, but that's the only thing that I notice sometimes, absolutely. As usual, you are an exceptional reactor! PS: I hope you hit another Woody Allen movie soon! Zelig or Broadway Danny Rose or Hannah And Her Sisters or Crimes And MIsdemeanors or Radio Days or......🤣

I'm down at Joe's Garage. I'm cool. Definitely watch the original just as a part of your film studies and it definitely had a sociopolitical undercurrent being that is was a paradigm of what was called "the Red Scare" about a communist takeover of the U.S. and based on the excellent novel THE BODY SNAYCHERS by Jack Finney published in 1955. It's probably in my top 3 favorite sci-fi films of the '50s

So this version IMO is better than the original though the original is still well done with a different ending. The guy who got ran down by the car in the street was the main actor in it who did a similar scene in that original film. There's also a more recent one called 'Invasion' that's similar starring Nichole Kidman from 2007 I believe. A superior remake over an original 1950s movie would be 'The Blob' from 1988 which has excellent real effects that I'm sure will blow your mind because of how well done some of them are.

People in the movie reporting that the people in their lives weren't really who they were supposed to be brings to mind the movie Coherence (2013). It's a great low budget film all taking place in one house on one night during a dinner party. At some point, the conversation turns to the comet currently passing the earth and the strange stories that came from people in different parts of the world the last time it passed, decades or centuries before, when people didn't seem to be themselves after. Wikipedia describes it as a surreal science fiction psychological thriller. I'd say that sums it up. Highly recommend.

I don't get the fun angle here. This movie is a very intense commentary on mass conformity in modern society. The ease in which the masses are so easily absorbed and lose their souls in order to get along is a devastating critique. As a good piece of art it shows this, but doesn't announce or preach about it.

Uh, dude, the angled shot of a street wasn't being "artistic." THAT'S A NORMAL SAN FRANCISCO STREET. If you step outside almost anywhere in San Francisco, the street will be at that angle, with all the cars parked on a steep incline. That's why the city is famous for its Cable Cars dragged by underground cables, instead of normal street cars. There are signs everywhere instructing you to park with your wheels turned against the curb and your emergency brake on ---- so empty cars don't go rolling down the streets and crash into things. Many streets are so steep that they just turn into staircases at the top, and Lombard Street, when it reaches Russian Hill, has eight hairpin turns in one single block. The man who runs up to Donald Sutherland's car screaming was played by Kevin McCarthy, who starred in the original 1956 version of the film. He greatly enjoyed playing this cameo, and most of the audience recognized him. The 1956 version was originally made with a hopeless ending, but the producers were horrified by this, and forced the director to add a newly filmed "happy ending." This annoyed film buffs for a generation, and the makers of this version would have been lynched if they didn't restore the originally intended unhappy ending. Some film historians claimed that the original film was "anti-communist paranoia" --- which it most certainly was not. It was clearly about the loss of personal individual identity in the conformist society of America in the 1950s. In this film, Donald Sutherland (who was a Canadian with very strong liberal political views) makes a joke about people "turning into Republicans" ---- a process which was at that time starting to take place in San Francisco. Trivia: Sutherland had four sons, and he named each one of them after a film director he admired. More trivia: Unlike many Canadian actors who found success in Hollywood or Europe, Sutherland never changed his citizenship. He had, in fact, married into a prominent Canadian political family. When he found that he had been taken off the voting roles because he had spent more than five years outside the country, he strongly protested. As a result, the Supreme Court of Canada overruled the regulation and guaranteed voting rights for expat Canadians. He always maintained a residence in a small village in rural Quebec, and was perfectly fluent in French.
