I don't like the ending either but life is often that way. Not everything is tied neatly in a bow. Three young beloved family members of mine were murdered in '97 & the killers still walk free. The youngest was my 5 year old great nephew. Life isn't fair & there's often no happy ending

Glad to see you reacting to films that have been largely overlooked by reactors. Although I really like the film that is at least in part because I like trippy stories and visuals. The problem is that the focus was supposed to be on Susie's journey as she trys to come to terms with her lost life which she does by observing what has grown around connections she made while still alive. Charting the ongoing progress of a world without her in it. I recall doing much the same thing when I switched high schools at age 15 and was constantly looking back instead of looking forward, monitoring from a distance what was going on in the world I had left behind. That is more than enough subject for a movie although not too much for the source novel. When the adaptation tries to duplicate the scope of the book by giving so much emphasis to the discovery of her murderer and his backstory, it makes the scope of the movie too large, which takes away from its power. I didn't care one way or the other about the ending because it is not part of Susie's journey. It was just an obligatory concession to expectations.

You made a great point about creativity. I'm more inclined to make allowances for a movie that tries to do something special and doesn't quite hit the mark than for something straight off the production line.

For another artsy Peter Jackson film, I recommend Heavenly Creatures.

This movie & book are both good but so sad. Stanley Tucci is incredibly creepy.

Yeah... Jackson made some choices to try to lighten the book's subject matter that made the tone a bit jarring, especially in the last scenes. Although, I'm super glad that he changed the ghost sex to a kiss.

I agree on the ending. I dislike it more than you, I think. For me I needed an ending that justified the film in the first place ... and I didn't get it. But yeah, some great visuals. Still think you'd get a lot from What We Do In The Shadows xxx
