Here's the thing. As someone who is a "zillenial" (because apparently that's a thing lol!) The whole "Gen Z" concept doesn't actually make sense. It makes it sound like the next generation but "Gen Z" is not young enough to be Millenials kids. The media got fed up of putting actual generations against each other (Boomers vs Millenials) so basically made up Gen Z to profit off teenage and young adult angst. I say that as a young adult lol! But here's where it doesn't make sense. Millenials are young enough to be Boomers kids hence they are the next generation. Whereas "Gen Z" are not young enough to be the kids of the full millenial age range. So they are quite literally not the next generation. There has to be at least 18 or I guess in the US, 21 year gap below the bottom age range to be the next generation. So yeah the whole "Gen Z" concept jus5 needs scrapping. For a group of people that supposedly don't like labels and want to be unique this group of people have fallen for the "Gen Z" label hook line and sinker.

According to Merriam-Webster (and also my online experience in 2014), the term “woke” came from African-American Vernacular English (AAVE) and gained prominence during the rise of Black Lives Matter in 2014. It meant to stay alert to racial and social injustice. My understanding is that the term got diluted by “allies” who didn’t know what they were doing, and then co-opted by the far right to dismiss and belittle both the allies doing a bad job AND the real activists fighting for change. Now it’s mostly used negatively, which I think is unfortunate

Women in the woke movement aren't allies, they're fighting for themselves too. The only group that could be called allies are white straight cis men and do you see a lot of them? Because I don't. But now that I'm 21 almost 22, I realize just how fucked up that man is and everything he's ever said and done really made a bad impact on me. Idk how he did for you guys but to me, he kind of fucked up parts of my childhood and I know that's such a weird and dramatic thing to say but the content he posted before doing the "docuseries" with how much he talked about sex and violence and other graphic material made me get into some things that I really wasn't ready for at 14-15. Ugh, Shane bringing on his brother to this podcast is frustrating and really brings Shane's intelligence and judgment further into question. As you pointed out, it isn't any "anti-woke" sentiments he might have, it's the conspiracy theories. Stuff like flat earth and lizard people is just laughable and ridiculous enough on face value to make any sane individual not have him on their show. But then you dig deeper and find (yep, I'll say it because you can't) they are rooted firmly in anti-semitism. Bad move on Shane's part. Like, I get it... he's his brother and he loves him and wants him to do well. But this shows he isn't just not pushing back on that kind of BS behind the scenes, he's enabling it on his platform AND he lacks the critical thinking and research skills himself to realize why those theories are so bad. I'm convinced at this point that Shane is far dumber than I ever noticed he was in his prime. EDIT: Aaaaaand I paused the video and left my rant too soon because the anti-semitism issue was firmly discussed.

i just wanna say re: millennials and being "woke": this term, stolen from aave and twisted by mainstream white culture, was weaponized against progressive millennials, particularly black and brown ones, by those on the political right long before it ever started being hurled at gen z folks. i was 16-ish (27 now) the first time i saw the word being used in its original aave context, and it was only a few years later before it was the phrase du jour to describe "people we don't like" by the political right. woke stopped meaning "conscientious about systems of oppression and power" and started meaning "a loud black person who won't shut up about things we don't care about." woke today looks little like it did ten years ago, and its use has little to do with age (it's hurled as an "insult" by everyone from boomers to gen z) and more to do with political alignment. that being said, younger people tend to be aligned more politically left than older people, so yeah, gen z is going to be more left than young millennials, who are in turn going to be more left than older millennials, etc.

I’m one of the people you mentioned falling down the rabbit hole and I’m so glad you mentioned it. I was a fan of Shane during the conspiracy theory era and it really fucked me up. I consumed that shit constantly and would rewatch the videos a lot. At that point I had been developing a severe anxiety disorder due to recent trauma and some of his theories about the government made me extremely paranoid and fed my anxiety. I fell into the world of end times theories and my anxiety became so bad I had to be homeschooled, I was having 3 hour long attacks multiple times a day because I was convinced the world was ending. It became a cycle and I was in constant distress. Eventually I became suicidal and came very close to overdosing on the Xanax I was prescribed for my condition (bad idea on my doctor’s part btw, I was literally 12). That whole period of my life caused me religious trauma but I’ve learned to laugh off all of the insane theories pushed by crazy old religious people. However, I now fear them for a different reason. Ever since Trump was in office the whole conspiracy theory community has become much more dangerous, I mean just look at QAnon. It’s alarming that Shane is going back to conspiracy theories especially at a time like this considering he still does actually have a large audience Btw I’m not blaming Shane for my anxiety disorder as like I said I had recently suffered lifechanging trauma, but I’m bringing light to how his content and the irresponsible ways he presented theories led me down an extremely dark path and most likely many others

i.....am not sure we can generalize any generation to not supporting shane. there will be millenials who enjoy his content and there will also be gen zs who do it. the more accurate statement, probably, is that conservatives and right wingers use woke as an insult, as opposed to any specific generation. but gen z and young millenials did popularize its use (which, originated from aave) so saying its never used unironically isnt actually true. black americans used the term, which got co-opted online with gen z/lgbt crowds which hence popularized it and that, in turn, made people find it cringey and started using it ironically and making fun of it. its just another example of people co-opting aave and discarding it when its no longer "cool" even tho black americans have been and probably still do use the terms. (like saying "no cap", "go off", the whole yas queen kinda language that drag has co-opted is largely originated from black american lgbt ppl too).

All I want is for him to stop talking about bodies and weight on the podcast. It’s so counterproductive considering his own ED and body image issues. 🤧 EDIT: I wasn’t a fan from the beginning, but started watching late into his kitchen video(s) phase. I witnessed the transition into an amazing content creator and then the downfall. I’ve avoided all of his content since he’s come back to KZbin, but I decided to try the podcast the other day. It wasn’t terrible, but god, it’s so hard to consume these days. 🤧 Idk. I’m sure it’s way more than millennials!

I agree. Shane appeals to a certain kind of audience. Maybe most of them are Millennials - I don't know the analytics - but I don't think that age range plays a major role in it. Millennials aren't flocking to his podcast because we remember him from early KZbin or whatever. I'd be willing to bet that most people who once turned into his channel back in 2006 have grown up, developed different interests, and learned how problematic Shane is.

Oh absolutely, it came off so weird and as just... Judging an entire generation for some of the people of that gen being trash. That honestly doesn't help anything; just like painting all boomers as selfish assholes who give no shits about the world being destroyed - my folks are younger boomers ('57 and '61), and especially my dad is incredibly devoted to living sustainably and using the car as little as possible, for example. Badmouthing an entire generation isn't going to inspire anyone to better themselves.

As a millenial watching this video, I never felt older 🤣 until I figured out that you're a millenial, too. I mean, you're making Shane Dawson video and I'm watching it 😂 Yeah, I noticed that at some point people start doing the "these kids nowadays" and it's honestly silly to me. As if the same thing wasn't said about them only 5 years ago and same for generation before and the one before, and before and on and on it goes. Generalizing, the thing is that it can be very frustrating for younger generations no matter which generation it is at whatever point in time. It's simply because younger generations are introducing something new. Without generalizing, there are all kind of people everywhere, regardless of the age group or anything else really. And I feel like that's the part that matters. These dangerous groups tend to thrive of of separating people bc, in reality, they have nothing else to offer. Aka, making people feel special without any valuable reason which is not really very healthy. This environment where you don't need to work on yourself, but instead are special bc you were born a certain way doesn't for example build up confidence, instead it creates superiority complex. At some point, people will realize that they do in fact live just like everyone else and will need to justify it, usually by find someone else to blaim. We might be in 2022., but apparently, looking in the mirror is still one of the hardest things to do regardless of it being the most effective. Back in the early 2010s, I would have never guessed that 10 years later, one of the ways would be through dumb online theories. Now, I kind of understand why. You're special, the theories are intriguing and it makes you feel inquisitive, a lot of theories explain why your life is not the way you want it and it's never about taking responsibility, there is also a community around it, so you might feel accepted, you feel like you are doing sth important... When all logic leaves the building, people apparently strive for community and approval. Which brings me to the beginning - separating people. So, yeah, let's not do that 😅

man bad take, idk weird generalisations on generations. i’m genZ (with adhd and no attention span mind you) and i need long form content to function (in the background so i can do other tasks without losing focus) and i don’t think most millennial‘s are how you described them, sure maybe some of shane’s og millennial fans are there but i think it’s mostly young people (so younger genZ) who haven’t quite figured themselves out yet. seems like you’re trying to hard to detach yourself from millennials when like you said you’re right on the cusp. lots of them are probably more like you than most genZ

Ah yes, I just love when people use phrases aggressively like "raw-doggin it" and "going in bareback" to show how they are unapologetically going to do what they want. Both of those terms are for unprotected sex, but the way it is being used is to show it is **unwanted** unprotected sex, which in no way I think they mean, but bc they don't care or listen when other ppl talk bc they are so certain of their victimhood. I'm tired.

The only podcast I listen to is trash taste and I think that's because they talk about so many things quickly. Even if it were a creator I like, I would not be able to sit through most podcasts though that could be just me. Shane sucks and I didn't know he had a brother but I don't doubt he sucks as well. In a way I feel bad for them, they obviously had some messed up childhoods, but that doesn't excuse Shane's unchanged behavior. It's not entirely your fault if you were raised poorly or have childhood trauma that has caused some of thease things, it is your fault if you don't change when you are given the chance to change. Ngl tho the couches they are all sitting on look very cozy

Fraser, my dude, I love you but try to not push so much of that generationnal divide thing with Millenial and GenZ because from my experience, a lot of the people who stuck with Shane are a healthy mix of Millenial who grew up with him and stuck and GenZ who discovered him with his spooky conspiracy stuff. I think you'd be actually surprised how many young people still follow/support him. Also, try to not disparage the term woke too much since it was an AAVE term that originated in black community to denote awareness of the sopolitical issues that affected the black community. I know that like a lot of terms/words, like triggered for example, it has been kinda ruined online but do be careful when you say thing like you don't like that word because it can kinda come off as dismissive of what is basically and appropriated term. Just wanted to point it out! As for Shane: No Rylan, the issue isn't just with Shane pissing in bottles. Like I get it, if I was a guy on a long road trip stuck in my car I'd do it too as an EMERGENCY thing. The issue is that your fiance is a grown ass man, pissing in bottles everywhere, in the car during normal ride, in your bedroom, around your house and him leaving them lying around EVERYWHERE and letting your friends touch/smell them because it's "funny" because, apparently, being gross and a slob is a quirky personality trait for the both of you. Like, it's actually disgusting how casual you all are about it. It's not normal, not every man does it to that extend. And yeah, Shane's brother is giving off some really bad vibes and red flags here with promoting flat earthers and reptilian conspiracy theories, both who are either full of/based on antisemetism. It ain't a good look is what I'm saying.

As someone who apparently falls into the so called “zillenial” category. This whole Gen Z and Millenial thing is just laughable to me. The media ran out of content to pit “Boomers” and “Millenials” against each other. So the concept of “Gen Z” was born. But here’s the thing...Gen Z are not young enough to be Millenials kids, whereas Millenials are young enough to be Boomers kids. Hence they are the next generation. Gen Z are literally not the next generation. So it makes no sense as a conceit. It’s just a way for the media to profit off teenage/young adult angst. Can we please drop the Gen Z thing? I say this as someone who is bang in the middle. It’s like ironically a generation that bangs on about not being in a box and standing out just love this made up “Gen Z” concept and speak about Millenials as though they’re boomers when most Millenials are only a few years older than this made up Gen Z concept. Even you’re guilty of doing this here. Speaking about Millenials as though they’re boomers, when most of us barely left uni.
