The group would have died way earlier with Shane as the leader because he lack the qualities that Rick have. Shane would never listen to Hershel or other characters. I think the season 1 finale (especially the situation with Dr. Jenner) proves why Rick was always the best leader. But Rick surely learned from Shane.

Remember Randall interrogation and his scene with Carl. He was damn near of hurting him, everything in the scene told you what was going to happen when he would have been free. That's why Shane understood that he had to take the decision because each second that pass would be for him another chance of hurting someone and call for back-up to torture/rape and kill them all. Shane did the right thing.. the sad truth is what Andrea told him "isn't what you do/say that manner, it's the way you doing it that make you the bad guy". Normally Rick would have listen to him but because of what happened with Lori and what she told him, Rick thought that he already lost his mind and it was true. Isn't only Rick that killed him but everyone that didn't spook their minds during when they decided about Randall fate.

Shane was a great leader and adapted better than anyone. He started to lose it after getting under insane stress and being manipulated by lori. You can see at the end Shane saw some sense and wasnt going to shoot rick but rick lied and killed him after convincing him to be peaceful. Rick is just the worst.

It was possible because he was going back to normal until Lori said the baby could be his. She played them against eachother but Shane fell victim to it because he's not a rational thinker like rick. I don't think he was too far gone but I do think he lost his empathy and sympathy for others

As far as I'm concerned Rick had reached Shane in his final moments hence why he handed the gun back over and his surprise when Rick actually stabbed him, unfortunately Shane got through to Rick a lot before Rick was able to pull him back. Shane's final moments were most likely a mixture of pride and relief knowing he made Rick the man he'd need to be to survive this world but his final moments were also probably filled with regret and wonder as that little speech he gave probably made him wish he chose his own friend over some chick
