This is great! My first shortcut will be a countdown for Sundays at 5pm, which is when screen time ends for my kids. I can give them a notice at 10 and 5 minutes before, then a ten second countdown, after which it will turn off the SmartPlugs connected to the gaming TVs and gaming systems. The countdowns are my way of helping them ensure they can log out (which they will only use to try to cram as much gaming activity as possible rather than logging out in time). Shane, given the large overlap, I presume you are familiar with Siri’s “What’s my update?” command. It provides nearly all of what you have programmed, though clearly yours offers great customization. The benefit to this command is that it works now via audio reply.

This is fun! Unfortunately I have had to unplug all of my HomePods because the instant any one of them go from standby to connected I start having delays and siri issues. They (homepods) work great and I loved having them as speakers and siri points, and would love to use these intercom shortcuts, but they are in timeout until someone figures out a workaround or Apple decides to let us exclude them like we can an AppleTV. The only thing I hate about Apple is how slow they are to give us the simplest of control over our systems. My wired and Wireless AppleTVs are rock solid as hubs. Not one of my 6 Homepods are good at it. Why can't I choose Apple!! Why!!??

Great video Shane! I wonder, can you interact with the HomePod, e.g via the “choose from menu” option if it’s been automated like this? That would be a game changer for me. My personal goodmorning shortcut is interactive, like asking me if I wish you play music or open my shades.
@ShaneCreates
@ShaneCreates Жыл бұрын
I think the only way to do something like that is to trigger the automation from the HomePod...therefore the HomePod would be listening for your response. Technically the Intercom action/shortcut is running from your personal device (iPad in this case). Choose from menu should work though when you run the shortcut via siri on the HomePod. I do this as well.

This is really a game changer Shane. I have a homepod mini and a google home mini. Now, i just converted to homepod mini to do all those reminding stuff done previously by google home mini through its routine feature. My homepod is now way better than google home when it comes to convenience and extra features like being able to set monthly or yearly reminder and being able to access through my smart watch. There is just few bugs that I encountered: 1. The voice stays to male. Change the voice from setting will not affect the voice used by intercom ran from shortcut. 2. You cannot use intercom command within repeat command. Not sure if this is a bug. 3. The volume doesn’t seem to be consistent. It will always use the same volume for some reason unless you adjust the volume in homepod while he is talking. Hope all bugs get fixed soon. Overall, I am very happy this feature was added. It’s really is a game changer for me.

I just thought I have to mention this. This feature just got so much more useful with the integration with openai. It’s fun to setup a daily reminder where Siri will say different things every day. For example, I was able to setup a reminder for my kid to go to school at a specific time or he will be late. I just tell AI “Tell a kid named Light to go to school now or he will be late. You may mention his classmates Zoey-Dale and Marco. “ and Siri will remind my kid exactly how i wanted and it’s different set of words every time and it even include the name of my kid and his classmates. This is really awesome.

That would require us to use the intercom action in a home automation, which we can't do currently. Hopefully that'll change. Seems like that would be too easy to miss though if it ran. Personally, I'd probably rather have a notification sent to my phone. Or just have the thermostat adjust automatically when the temp gets too low.

Probably. Although I'm not sure intercom would be the best option for that if you are using your voice to trigger the shortcut anyways. I'd probably create the shortcut called "do I need my sunglasses" and then get the weather. Then, based on the weather, IF it's sunny, I'd probably use "show result" to say yes "yes, bring your sunglasses." If you trigger the shortcut on a HomePod, it should speak back the "show result."

@ShaneCreates

Thanks!! Depends on what you need to do, but there are probably a couple of ways to do it. Maybe the automation runs at 5:30am, then use and IF action to see if the light is one. If it is, carry out the following actions. Otherwise, do nothing. Or maybe another way is to create an automation when the light turns on, convert to shortcut, then check the time and see if it's between 5:20 and 5:30 using the Date and If actions.

Shane, I’ll be honest, shortcuts is intimidating as hell. Why can’t these options from shortcuts be available in just the home app automation. Keep things centralized?
@ShaneCreates
@ShaneCreates Жыл бұрын
You actually can do all the home shortcut stuff from the Home app. In an automation, instead of choosing the accessories to control, you scroll to the bottom of your accessory list and choose "convert to shortcut." This is the same as creating a "Home Automation" in the shortcuts app. It gets confusing when you try to understand the difference between a home automation/shortcut and a personal automation/shortcut. In a nutshell: personal automations run on your personal device (iPhone, iPad, etc) and only work for you. Home automations run on your homekit hub (Apple TV, HomePod) and can work for everyone in the house.

I was extremely excited until you said "personal shortcuts" - WHY APPLE?

Love this, just used your link the other day to setup announcement when my doors are open too late but the conversions and getting into Apple Music was a pain, very excited for this! I want to do this for all my doors, and good night routines as I’m always manually requesting the next days weather etc. This feature has really been my biggest bone against apple vs Alexa as that was there years ago, so have been without out it for over a year! Thx as always. On another note I recently purchased the level bolt lock and in 3 months have replaced the battery 3 times! Any ideas why it’s draining so fast? I also so u had a shortcut for checking battery levels can u point me to a video where u show how to set that up?

I don't know why the battery would drain that fast. I haven't used any Level Lock devices yet. Sorry, but I don't have a video on checking the battery levels. The Controller for HomeKit app is a good resource for that though.

@@ShaneCreates sounds good. I do have controller , so can look there, used that like you did for the door lock and garage door open/unlocked too long. Just need to figure out how to add a check if door already closed or locked to bypass the alert.

Hi Shane. @10:50, you mentioned running the Twinky Dots shortcut with a button tap. Have you considered "running the shortcut" with personal automation based on the time of day?

Thanks for the suggestion. It's a good idea. I'd rather not run it automatically though in the event she has a day off of school or something like that.

@@ShaneCreateshave it on “ask before run” that way you don’t have to go looking for the shortcut. It’ll just automatically appear on your phone and you tap or cancel

I have a question, sorry it doesn’t have anything to do with intercom, anyway to get HomeKit to work with my nest thermostat and smoke alarms?

Thank you Sir, I will check them out. I’m not a fan of Alexa so I’m trying to switch to HomeKit. We are Apple people 😊
