I was about to purchase this off of your link but the reviews on Amazon scared me as a US user. I just moved and am starting over with my smart home setup. I have around 50+ devices which are primarily Aqara (no fp2) and Nanoleaf. I do not have a third party home controller such as home assistant etc yet so that is another reason this appealed to me so that I can finally make some more advanced automations that can all be controlled in one place. Have you seen improvements in the integrations and with Aqara since you made this video? Thanks again for everything you do man. Love your channel!

Be careful, the marketing is misleading. This is a Cloud required device with limited local network features. Without internet for extended periods even after setup will make the hub stop working. And nothing ensure that the company won’t change their business model and enforce monthly fees in the future, like other cloud hubs did. The confirmation about being cloud required is also confirmed by their support channel and it is available only in their Athom community topic regarding it. They offer return for people buying it under mistaken interpretation of their misleading marketing.

What is not highlighted about Homey Pro in this video is that it is actually more a home automation system, with multiple hubs built in, and an App market place where software is provided to integrate and orchestrate everything from a single place in a single box. It replaces hubs, controllers, and servers in a single supported and packaged product which is easy to use by non technical experts. It is a solid balance between extreme power users and basic push button drag and drop users. Homey user base swears by it for almost a decade now, and the Homey Pro 2023 is a significant upgrade on many fronts. These people are actually investing in building the smart home and making it interoperable. I’m in - the $400 dollars will pay for itself with time saved and technical support availability not to mention continued software updates.

@teamgartz-motorsports6881

@@GregEva from what I read about the product it’s a continuous thing, there’s a certificate or token that requires revaluation ever two weeks to keep it working.
@teamgartz-motorsports6881

Also I asked support about it, they did not provide information neither denied that this is how works. Only stated that there is no local network access besides API key and some tokens will expire earlier than others without internet.

I got answer from the support, they confirmed with no margin for doubt that their product doesn’t support local only usage and requires cloud network to function. The marking is misleading and doesn’t match the product implementation. In the Athom community I have posted the full support communication.

I was a staunch "I can do everything I want with HomeBridge and HomeKit" guy, but this weekend I found a spare Raspberry Pi4 and decided to throw Home Assistant on it. 48 hours later, I've converted all of my existing automations over (simplifying greatly along the way), and built a few that simply weren't possible before. Give it a shot, especially if you have hardware laying around... I still use Home for the "frontend", but it's much cleaner, simpler to use, and much more responsive!
@ShaneCreates

Price aside, yes... I'm blown away. It's very impressive and has been a joy to use. Of course, it's a very high price tag and certainly a big investment. The price is comparable (actually cheaper) than the very similar HOOBS Pro ($399 preorder, $499 msrp). There is apparently a waiting list for that device after the first and second batch sold out. So there seems to be a market for this type of device at that price range.

The way Homey handles automations AND backups should have been implemented in HomeKit long time ago. Quite frankly, Apple being a so-called high tech with high end products are quite slow and/or dumb sometimes. Let’s hope some of those awesome Homey features will come, someday, directly inside HomeKit. Keep up the great work!

That would be nice. I don't see Apple ever giving us the more advanced automation capabilities like this. They like to keep it simple for their users, which I understand (even if I don't agree). Of course I could be wrong. They did give us shortcuts and "convert to shortcut" which opened up a lot more "advanced" possibilities. I guess we'll see! Thanks for watching!

Thanks for the review. Looks promising.....but....how many times have we said that before. The underlying problem for home automation still exists. You are reliant on a proprietary system from a for-profit company (a small one in this case) to provide and continue to provide the necessary support to operate as required by our automations and maintain reasonable security. Having to rebuild your home automation system every couple of years is getting old or will be soon. This one was very slow to market in the US so that's concerning as well. The price tag means this one is more of a commitment than a trial and error experiment for those of us that have to pay for it. Time will tell but it won't be my time. Now put all those radios on a $100 usb device that any home automation system can access and you've got a winner.

I have one here inAustralia . It is absolutely worth the money for me. In Australia we have very little available in the smart home market so trying to get things to work in an Apple home is really hard. It has opened up a whole new world. The automation or flow builder is absolutely awesome and quite frankly better than anything else I have used. I had hubitat but I have switched to Homey. I have been watching the Dutch reviews of this product for a while and as soon as it was available in Australia 3 months ago I got it. And for me it’s close to $AU 700. I haven5 looked back honestly. The homey you tube page is also really good.

Currently the ONLY thing I could use this for is to be able to get my Govee light strips to flash when my driveway or other motion sensors are triggered. It would be nice to be able to replace my old school motion sensor floodlights with this as well. From what I understand I could have this device turn on specific lights or strips and let them remain on for any amount of time I wish? $400 seems like an incredibly expensive solution.

Just know that the HomeKit Experiment or the HomeKitty app do not support ALL device types.

Hey Shane, long-time listener, first-time caller. I've recently had a HomeKit meltdown similar to yours, so I'm really interested in using something that's more robust for my home, but still with Apple support and security. I recently got a Home Assistant Yellow box, but as I've gotten deeper into it, I'm starting to feel like I will be more of a dedicated network administrator instead of an occasional administrator. What I'd really like to hear is your opinion of Homey Pro after living with it for the last 10 months? Are you still loving it, or has the relationship soured? What ultimately worked well and what didn't? Is it truly worth the price of admission, or were there surprises that cropped up that should concern us? I know you're a busy guy, but I would love to hear what you think of it now; maybe via a follow-up episode? Thanks!

A standalone Homey bridge setup should be a cloud based setup. So the apps available to the Homey Bridge are different to the apps that are available to Homey Pro. The app selection is also more limited. When paired with the Homey Pro, the Homey Bridge becomes a sort of network extender (satellite) to the Homey Pro (running local execution). This is great for large or multi storey homes, or houses with lots of signal interference as it extends all the communication protocols that the on the Homey Pro (except Wi-Fi). Hope that helps.

Thanks for watching Gregg. I don't believe the Pico Remotes are supported via the HomeKit Experiment. Certain device categories are not supported, and I think buttons are one of those categories. I think the ideal situation would just be to automate your button in Homey, as I did with the Ikea remote shown in this video. As long as the other devices you want to control are in Homey, you can do that. The automations have been super reliable so far. And Yes, virtual switches are supported.

I use Ecobee thermostats, Orbit irrigation, Ring doorbells, Wyze cameras, OVRc to auto ping and reboot the modem or router as necessary, Harmony, and Lorex Cameras. 1) Did you test the caseta Diva smart switch and does it integrate easily with the Homie Pro? 2) can you set up different homes in the Homie Pro App, then rooms within each home? 3) were any of the systems I mentioned above that you tried and didn't integrate? I'm liking the idea of the Homie Pro to integrate my homes into one app, its looks very intriguing but I've been burned before.

Personally, I think it is if you want to use this as your primary smart home hub. I think it would be great for someone who may be just getting started. Of course, it's still a very high price tag and certainly a big investment. But it works well and I've really enjoyed it. The price is also very similar (actually cheaper) than the very similar HOOBS Pro ($344 preorder, $499 msrp). There is apparently a waiting list for that device after the first and second batch sold out. So there seems to be a market for this type of device at that price range.

Great video. Newbie question....are you adding your devices to Homey and thus able to get rid of product native hubs? I have Hue, Aqara, Switchbot, Govee, eufy hubs......and trying to understand if going Homeypro does it get rid of need to have all these hubs on network. They start to add up space LOL.
@ShaneCreates
@ShaneCreates 2 ай бұрын
Thanks for watching. In some cases, yes you can eliminate hubs. For example you can pair some aqara sensors directly to Homey Pro. It may work for zigbee products like Hue and Aqara to pair devices directly to Homey. Don't think you'd be able to do that with Eufy cameras... you will need the hub for those.

How reliable are the geofencing automations? My current Apple TV setup misses when everyone is out of my home about half the time and it’s really annoying. So looking for something more reliable to fix that. Also want something that integrates with Ecobee well too.

The effectiveness of geofencing automations is actually dependent on the phone, and not Homey Bridge or Homey Pro. In the phone, there are settings that you get set to expose not only the location, but also the precision of the location information (e.g. iPhone). For iOS users, spouse or kids have a tendency to only allow access to location "when using the app" or "Only once" whenever they see the "This app has been using your location in the background" notification pop up. This denies the hub the location of all the users and therefore, automations rules based on "When nobody is at home" will be broken. So it's critical to get this setup properly. Obviously, prerequisites includes "background app refresh" and "mobile data" must be turned on, which surprisingly, some people don't. Currently, my multi-users geofencing automations on Homey Pro has a 100% success rate. Connected devices for these geo-fencing automations includes lights, curtains, radio, air-conditioners, motion sensors, vacuum cleaner, etc, etc. Homey Pro has an app that allows ecobee integration. homey.app/en-us/app/com.ecobee/Ecobee/ Hope that helps.

£399 for Homey Pro, Shane makes it sound wonderful and for that money it should plus they want to charge you for cloud storage. Sorry but I can think of better things to do with that amount of money and seeing as Christmas and the winter months are on their way it will be put to better use. £150 perhaps would have been a better price but if you a.ready have an Amazon Echo (zigbee, matter, and thread covered), HomePod mini (thread, matter, homekit), if you already have Aqara, Eve, then you don’t need anything else really here in the UK. Z-Wave you never see anything on amazon UK, your lucky to see matter on there too. It’s just another Gand get to clutter up the home. How many of these would you need for a one up and one down house? One or two of them? Love the channel Shane I really do, but at the moment this is out of most peoples price range. 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻🇬🇧🇺🇸🇬🇧🇺🇸🇬🇧🇺🇸🇬🇧🇺🇸

Thanks for the comment! Definitely a big investment, I agree. Regarding your comment about needing multiple hubs... if you needed additional coverage (for extended z-wave, zigbee, IR range, etc.) you can use the cheaper ($69) Homey bridges in Satellite mode paired to a single Homey Pro.

@@ShaneCreates I did see the bridge, I am just astounded at the price of the master unit, the slave is more reasonably priced. I am at the point now unfortunately I am becoming less interested in smart phone tech and gadgets. When you compare what smart home tech is available in the USA and the UK it is chalk and cheese, so many options and variety compared to here in the UK. Matter is very limited here, I bought some nanoleaf essentials led bulbs and for them to work with Alexa I need one of the lights with a thread border router, but it works with homekit which to be honest isn’t that great. Anyway have a great week and all the best to you and the family. 👍🏻👍🏻👏🏻👏🏻👌🏻👌🏻🖖🏻🖖🏻

It can replace some hubs, as was demonstrated no use of IKEA bridge. Basically the Apps give specific vendor access to the radio interfaces. But that is one of the major benefits, no more 10 hubs each consuming energy and hassles. Lutron is likely not covered however as I believe it is proprietary protocol.
