What do you think about Apple's new focus and upcoming push into the smart home market? Let me know below!

to me it can be summed up in 3 reasons to not use it 1 vender lock-in 2 proprietary e-Waste 3 Trash warranty terms because its apple, who rather wants you to buy a new device, instead of fixing it for less than 10% the original cost

I think you are spot-on Shane. This is the time with all the indicators pointing toward Apple going big to own the smart home sector which is, by all rights, still in its infancy. I’m not an IT professional, but when I describe my Apple smart home to friends they are all envious, they just don’t want to invest the time and mental energy to make their home smart. The few installs I’ve done for friends have made some converts. If Apple will do this right and make a seamless, plug-n-play smart home system it will be the revenue stream they need to replace the iPhone.

I think Apple have realised two things - 1) the smart home space is there for the taking now. Apple should make a robot with a camera. Something that can check the whole home and alert you to any problems that may be occurring. For example: A water sensor detects a leak and alerts the robot to check on it, the robot camera can view it and alert your phone for prompt response. Sticking cameras all over the home is limited and old school. Home hub displays might look cool on the wall but do we really need one? Remote access seems like a better option than something stationary. It’s kind of like getting up to change the channel. Something you only do when in a bind.

The least Apple could do is allow for more flexible customization of the Home app. Why must all climate related sensors be grouped, why can't one have the flexibility to display the values of various sensors on the pages for each room? The ability to completely customize the screens that I display in Home Assistant is why I stick with it. Apple has a ton of catching up to do.

Question: at 01:53 mark, your camera feed image (thumbnail?) Seems to update LIVE when you turn on your pool lights. Was that just editing or is there an actual product/productS that will show a live update like that from the Apple Home app?
@ZACHA12Y10 сағат бұрын
He is viewing the camera feed in one of his rooms in his home through the HomeKit integration via his tv. He also has lights that are in the same room as the camera is. So, when he goes on his tv to view the feed from this room’s camera, he will also see icons for “related accessories” that are also in the same room. So he is just using his tv Remote app on his iPhone or the actual physical Siri Remote to scroll down to that icon for his lights and toggling them on. The icon for the light accessory updates to show the accessory state changed to “on” and, because he’s viewing a live stream of that room’s camera too, he can see the lights turn on in real time. So basically, no special feature or 3rd party app needed. Just looking at his camera (specifically, a camera with HomeKit Secure Video capabilities) on his Apple TV and toggling the accessories via his TV as well. If you have a newer generation Apple TV, just press the power button on the remote and a little “control center” panel will pop up in the upper right corner of your TV. Use the directional pad on the remote and click left twice (go to the far left screen-you’ll see a little HomeKit icon) and select the icon to view all your live camera feeds in each room of your house, and also any other related accessories you have set up in those rooms as well.

Shane, great video. Have always appreciated the focus of your channel just as you framed it up front: on products and capabilities that are in our hands today. That being said, I really value your POV on upcoming Apple smart home possibilities. While I'm optimistic about what the Apple home control display could be like, I'm more excited about the Home app and underlying Home platform getting a much (much) needed upgrade to address shortcomings we've all lived with for years now: flexible dashboards, better control of device groupings, simplified and more usable automations, and just a better user experience in general. If they do nothing but that, it will be a massive improvement IMO. I'm not that sure what value they'll be able to offer in the areas of smart TV's, cameras, locks, etc. I don't see all those things the same, but I'm not that excited about being forced to accept Apple design and form factor choices across my overall home. What will they really add in value prop for a TV over 3rd party TV's with an Apple TV attached? Just make the Apple TV more powerful. Cameras - is Apple really interested in supporting solar power, PoE, battery powered devices, etc, like are available from other vendors? Maybe, but why do it? To your point, just support >1080p in Home for goodness sake. Locks - this is already a hack industry in my view, mainly in terms of design choices and power management solutions in my view. Not enough high-end design choices in locks. I guess if Apple was committed to solving these core issues with current smart home tech, I'd be interested, but seems like a big de-focus from what has been Apple's core mission for decades. I also agree 100% with your statement that this market is still up for grabs and no one has done it right to date. Regardless, I'm following these rumors with keen interest, and hoping that the first and most important thing - making what we already have more usable and useful - gets addressed and done right as we all know Apple can.

Apple needs to make progress here as I use Alexa to control my home automation far more often than I do with Siri. Alexa allows me to say something like "Turn on downstairs bathroom fan for five minutes", where such capability doesn't exist with Siri. I do like Apple's Home app much better than Amazon's app, but with all of my lights, thermostats, doors, etc. automated and controllable by voice, I use Alexa and voice far more often. I don't think that Apple needs to make all of the devices (door locks, thermostats, switches, etc.), but historically that is how Apple has achieved interoperability vs. using open standards and that is likely one of the reasons that Apple hasn't done a deep dive into home audo/theater or home automation. There are a multitude of players there already and most of us have struggled through open standards, beta firmware, etc. to make these automation work for us, so it will be interesting to see how Apple approaches it.

Love the idea Apple may (finally!) put its customer-centric design skills to the smart home environment. As someone who has owned just about every one of their products since my first IIe I’ve been so disappointed by their approach to HomeKit. Let’s be honest, it’s rubbish but for the most basic of use cases. If they DO go this path then existing equipment like the old iPads so many of us already use as HA dashboards MUST at least be capable of running a HomeKit dashboard even if the AI grunt work needs to be done by a dedicated device. 🤞

I have built a fairly large homekit in my townhouse, and aviod pulling out my phone or having a screen mounted on the wall (my space is on 3 floors, I dont want a screen on every one). I love being able to ask Siri a question or ask her to do something. But it could be more conversational. I'm thoroughly missing the real focus of what a smart home should do for me. I'm looking for European in wall thread buttons and mains sockets (or mounted in a cable duct). Also think of rotary selector knobs ( physical 2 or 3 or 4 position - not endlessly rotating encoders). These should be mains powered - not battery powered. And wifi or ethernet based kWh meters that bring the data to the Matter controller with a 1 second interval. Both in wall and DIN rail kWh meters - mono and tri phase. And that the Matter controller can process that data locally - with in built battery for short power outages - and that it continues working also when internet is down (modem down). Think about a tamper proof version good enough to serve as alarm system. And thread E27 RGB lamps that do mesh networking for data transfer of products of other brands too. And CO2 meters with 5 minute interval as part of the control of a ventilation system with heat exchanger. And Matter control of the car charger. And cheap wifi displays with customisable layout as to show clock, temperature (also from other rooms), kW and daily kWh values, plus air quality. Make the displays USB-C powered. That should be the priority list ! Sorry but no camera, internet browser and robotic arm needed in my bedroom. That's the perfect recipe for screwing sleep quality. Bed time is for sleeping. I hope these tech giants are going to use their brains and come up with product that are needed. We have the obligation to make our houses environment friendly with a fixed timeline the next coming years. Higher insulated homes need ventilation. During winter self consumption of excess solar energy is key. These basic things should urgently be the focus in the development of the smart home anno 2025. Kind regards, Jan

But the ads! 😣 I agree though, they do look nice. But I think the software/UI is where Google and Alexa fall short in my opinion. Hope Apple does this new smart home OS well.

I wish would do some smart home devices. I’d love to see them team up w someone like wyze, that way we have some devices that slide right into the eco system and they ain’t breaking my wallet either.

I don't want to have to but yet another device, just make available on all the devices I currently own& I xan carry it with me wherever I go instead of having it fixed to a wall

Apple has always been late to the smarthome game. When they did enter, they shunned established standards and protocols. They joined Matter to stay relevant, they initially were leaps and bounds everyone else for Matter support. They've reverted back to their old ways of limited functions and devices, ie power metering, long after they've been adapted into the standard. I think what ever apple does will be limited and disappointing. At most we will get a more capable voice assistant letting siri remain a strong complement to other robust automation platforms like Home Assistant.

All of this hinges on Siri actually becoming smart. I'm not holding my breath.

This explains why you can no longer use iPads as a home pod.

I wouldn't pay a dime for special smart home features. And anyone that wants to use complicated automations will just use Home Assistant anyway. I don't see what they could do to make me pay for a subscription. It might actually push me out of the walled garden.

I'll faint if the smart home display is $100

Yeah not a fan! I’ve got an iPad in the wall which was a hub in the past then Apple updated HomeKit and made the iPad defunct no longer a hub but more importantly no longer able to access HomeKit at all!!! Glad I switched over to home assistant for the back end but now that iPad is utilised with home assistant to control and see everything again. Now I can get any display to work no longer controlled by bait and switch

I just want Apple home to work after every update. I had to turn off auto updates on my HomePods and appletvs to avoid the dreaded re-syncing of everything for two hours when I sit down to watch tv. Just make it reliable…

Vanguard tier bonuses look incredible! Alemio is rewarding its loyal presale participants and early adopters well!

Apple better get their crap together, I have been an apple user for 30 years and I am tired of being behind the curve. Tired of buying the latest home kit product only to have to jump through hoops to make it somewhat work only to have it go unsupported. If apple cant compete with google or Alexa then get out of the way as I am not wasting anymore of my money on their products!
