I thoroughly enjoyed today’s field trip! Those bookstores themselves are works of art, put B&N to shame. I haven’t seen the Leave the World Behind movie, but the book is very good, chilling. Lastly, I love the little snippet of music at the very end of this vlog, it’s lovely. 🙏

Yeah, and these bookstores he showed are nothing compred to others I've seen in China that look unreal and futuristic, they're like museums! China is amazing!

Thanks for this video. Shouldn't the title be "Shanghai Amazing English Language Bookstores"? Chinese language bookstores are of course quite different. And I may have missed it, but there doesn't seem to have been any mention in the video of the reasons why many of the these bookstores have limited inventory of English language books. That is, it's not only the dearth of demand but also tight control over literature and the arts generally, even (sometimes especially) in Shanghai.

Thanks for the comment and for watching. Sure, what you say is true to a certain extent, but I can buy books here that are banned in Florida and Texas schools… so… I think it depends. The media isn’t open in China, but it’s also restricted in other countries, to a certain degree. My videos really don’t delve too much into the politics of a place, just sharing my day to day experience. But thanks for sharing your perspective, I appreciate it!

Great video! Thanks for showing us bookstores in Shanghai. I really like the vibe. I was wondering…do you recommend kindles for reading ebooks or iPads for ebooks? I have an iPad mini that I occasionally read ebooks with and I was wondering if it is worth it to get a kindle or can I just use my iPad mini alone for reading? Also, is the kindle better for your eyes than an iPad mini? Thanks again for your help!

I use both extensively. For me, I can’t really say which is better, it depends on the situation. The iPad has thousands of other functions, so if I need to work on other things that day, I’ll take my iPad for sure. If I’m reading in bed, then I might reach for my Kindle or a physical book. I see them as different tools for different moments, so “best” is super subjective. Hope this helps and thanks for watching!!

Thanks Michael for another interesting video. 2 questions. 1. How easy is it to get around using metro, etc. without any knowledge of chinese. 2. Did you get any flak when you come back to the States and tell people you live and work in China?
@michaelmast_nomadicthrive
@michaelmast_nomadicthrive Ай бұрын
The metro is easy, signage is in Chinese and English and several apps for navigation and planning routes are available. I’ve only been back to US once since 2015, but yes, some American friends/family don’t really get why I’ve stayed away so long. Most of these individuals haven’t travelled very much and have narrow political mindset.

You haven't been to APM book corner in XuJiaHui? It's run by a foreigner. Books are mostly fiction. Second-hand. From ¥20 to ¥40. Let me know if you want to know the address. It's open 24h/7.

I have two Kindles and a Kobo ereader… Around 50% of my yearly reading list is read digitally. I just like the way a real book feels in my hand. But to answer your question, I disagree they are the same experience. It’s the same information, sure, but a vastly different experience. That’s why I do both. Thanks for the comment!
