Quartet #14 "Way better than the overrated American"

Played with commitment to the score. Good balance of emotion and restraint. For me, this quartet is one of Dvorak's very best. At the risk of being stoned, I rate it higher than the ubiquitous "American".

The American is nice but it is so overplayed. I was thrilled to find this one a while back, it is wonderful.

No doubt, Opus 96, the 'American' has an outstanding first movement and a very good slow movement. I find Opus 105, 106, and also perhaps Opus 61 (in C Major) superior to it, however. With Opus 51, I'd say Opus 96 probably ties for third place among Dvorak quartets.

Excellent performance of Dvorak's op.105 masterpiece by the Shanghai String Quartet. Dvorak (1841-1904) was a prolific composer of chamber music. Amongst other works he composed 14 string quartets plus a number of partial works for the same string arrange- ment (e.g. 2 quartettsatz, 1 zypressen and 2 waltzes). His last three string quartets are op.96 ("American"), op.105 (presented here) and op.106.

Me encanta la música de DVORAK. Este Cuarteto para Cuerdas N° 14 lo tengo en CD, con Moyses Quartet, pero visualizarlo y oírlo es una experiencia fantástica. No conocía este Cuarteto y me parece excelente, de gran musicalidad.

A nice clip ruined by ads. An extremely loud one after about 8 minutes - sounded like a ship's horn pulmantour sea cruises for lonely OAPs. Then about 20 seconds before the end of the second movement an ad for MediaMarkt. No chance of these coming before the muaic starts or after it finished? Nah! Stick it in the middle of the music. The punters like it better that way. It really is taking the piss.
