I used to live in Shanghai and the pu xi district was the out skirts of the city so it makes sense to have all of the basic apartment complexes.

It's great fun to listen to the engines and imagine the captain continously moving the thrust levers back and forward while shaking the sidestick to maintain the glideslope!

Great approach into Shanghai and a smooth landing! I have flown on Air China twice and the pilots are very skilled.

Smooth! And man, those are some vast rows of towerblocks. I'd want to see how that looks from the ground :D. Any idea why he is varying the engine speed so much?

Probably because they are on approach. Controllers assign different speeds for traffic separation. Also they need to increase or decrease power to stay on glide path and when introducing flaps.

I guess it's autothrottle that changes the throttle a lot because of turbulences and winds. It wants to keep the plane at the same speed.

Stunning scenery but somewhat depressing seeing more and more beautiful old buildings being demolished for generic sterile apartment blocks.

Well you won't say that if you know one 80 SQ meters apartment in any of the new apartment complexes you just saw will cost you more than 1 million dollars.
