Don't forget that the B+ for the pix IF chain and tuner sometimes comes off the cathode of the sound output tube. The tube doubles as a sort of series-pass voltage regulator. If that tube is weak you may still get some audio, but the B+ getting to the RF/IF stages will be way too low to get things going.

shango can you explain what cutoff means for the picture tube, I know emission, but you always mention that while testing them
@kuebbisch3 жыл бұрын
Cutoff voltage is the G1 (control grid) bias voltage for the electron gun which creates a black picture. On top of this bias voltage the video signal is applied and if everything is working correctly you get a picture with correct saturation. If the cutoff voltage is out of range or not linear then you will get no picture or a picture with no or too much saturation/contrast. Hollow state audio people call that just the "bias" and write many and long posts on forums on where to set it to get the rights sound 😛 It is just establishing the operating point of any tube.
@boardernut3 жыл бұрын
@@kuebbisch right, makes sense I'm guessing then picture tubes should have what we call sharp cut-off G1 as in a pentode for audio, I' m wondering if the grid can be somehow damaged after many years of use or something like that
@kuebbisch3 жыл бұрын
@@boardernut Yes, even if a picture tube is more like a triode, due to the construction the electron gun acts like a sharp cut-off tube. The control grid is a ring in front of the cathode and so has a uniform spacing and thus hopefully a linear relationship between control grid voltage and beam current (aka. intensity or brightness on the screen). Measuring this voltage is the same as matching audio tubes for same cathode current when used in push-pull amplifiers (without independet bias control). It is impractical to directly measure beam current (cathode current) in picture tubes due to the high voltage needed to achive the 0.8 - 1 mA most picture tubes run. Even if you achive that current, then you burnt the phosphor in the middle of the screen because the tube tester has no deflection 😁 So measuring bias voltage at cutoff/black level it is...
