A Glimpse on Shanmukhapriya raga.
Welcome back to Raaga metro!!
The raga which we are gonna talk about in this episode has an indistinguishable quality as a raga which Lord Muruga loves or can be said as a raga which loves Lord Muruga as it has so many compositions on Lord Muruga. This ragam is Shanmukhapriya.
This raga is the 56th Melakartha Ragam. Since it is a melakartha ragam it’s a sampoorna Ragam which means all 7 swaras are present in this Raga.
In Deekshithar’s school of Music it was known by the name Chamaram.
Chamaram means Fan.
For eg This can be seen in the krithi Sidhi Vinayakam anisam where Deekshithar has used the Phrase Chatra Chamara Pariveerjitham to incorporate the raga’s name in it.
When we consider Hindustani Music there is no equivalent raga to Shanmugapriya so they have used this Raga as it is.

Not many popular Janya Ragas were born from Shanmukhapriya.
But recently they have used one of the Janya Ragas in the movie Ponniyin Selvan1
The raga is called as Samudrapriya aka Sumanasaranjani.
It’s used in the beginning of the Alaikadal song.
Vilayada idhu nerama is a very famous composition in this raga. Muthuswami Deekshithar’s Sidhi Vinayakam and Ekambreshanayakam ,Saint Tyagaraja’s Vaddane Varu ,Papanasam Sivam’s SaravanaBhava enum are set in this raga.
In recent times Dr Balamurali Krishna’s Omkara pranava varnam which is a very beautiful composition is set in this raga.
Also Arunagirinathar’s Thirupugazh Muthaitharu is also set in this Raga.
When we look at the film music we have abundant songs set in this raga across all genres.
For eg Pazham neeyappa sung by KP Sundarambal is a yesteryear song.
We do have melody songs too like Kannukul Nooru nilava composed by Mr Devendran.
After this we have Namthana Namthana and Maraindhuirundhupaarkum to add to the melody list.
IN Namthana song, one phrase “malarmaalai varum Subha velai varum thirunaal mananaal pudhunaal ennai azhaithathu”(singing) you can see all the signature phrases of shanmukhapriya being used in this line.
Same way in maraindhurundhu paarkum song the line "thooyane malava mayane shanmuga" you can hear Shanmukhapriya flowing beautifully in this line.
Not only these melody songs but on the contrary we have songs which are are purely entertaining and in the jolly-go genre like kaadhal kasakudhaiyaa, ooru vittu ooru vandhu these are peppy numbers. There are variety of songs available in tamil film music set to this raga.
Bhakthi, Adbhutham, Hasyam, Karunyam these rasas can be expressed through this raga.
In fact it can be said that this is the most versatile raga in Carnatic music as this raga can bring out plenty of emotions. Some people shed tears after hearing this raga as it kindles the deep seeded emotions.
The impact of this raga on the mind is such that it energises and instils courage in the rasikas and the presenter.
And this raga can be sung all through the day it is not restricted to mornings or evenings.
Shanmukhapriya is not only present in Carnatic music in our country but it is also used in Western music.
You may hear glimpses of Shanmugapriya in Hungarian Gypsy Scale / Gypsy music.
You may expect interesting music on our Channel.
