Haven't seen gameplay of this since the kickstarter for Half Genie Hero when the team live streamed this and a few other canceled games. This has to be some of the most gorgeous sprite work on the GBA outside of perhaps an RPG or two.

​@@TemmiePlaysnope, Shantae Advance has a more SNES-like vibe than Risky's Revenge. The sprites and backgrounds (most of which being 2002-04 era s**t) are less detailed too! But some assets not seen before are lifted from Risky's Revenge

⁠@@TemmiePlays Risky’s Revenge wasn’t for the GBA so that’s a moot point lol. And anyway they’re not identical at all. There are some assets here and there that were clearly repurposed for Risky’s Revenge (back when this game was still shelved), but overall the sprite work is (fittingly) more of a midway point between the original game and Risky’s Revenge.

For instance, the forest background in the Shantae Advance demo was a placeholder taken from a non-WF source, being Hameln no Hiki for SFC, but in the full game, they just used the forest background from Risky's Revenge and painted it blue with some brightness/contrast changes

I love everything about this. It’s so surreal seeing the old sprite art combined with the new art direction in the dialogue portraits. I preordered a physical cart day 1 and I’m super excited to bust out my GBA for this.

I can't believe the stark contrast between this game and the original Shantae game, I've literally been playing it in preparation for this game. It looks even better than pirate's curse with the smooth animations and that one's a 3DS game.

What a treat! Thank you for this video! I already put in my pre-order. The pixel are is beautiful, the animations are incredibly fluid and the OST is amazing! The original Shantae pushed the limits of what was possible on the GBC hardware and this game looks like it will do the same for the GBA. I can't wait to have this in hand and play it on my Analogue Pocket. I also have my original GBA console and and looking forward to playing multiplayer with my daughter. Job very well done and congrats on being able to complete this masterpiece and share it with us.

I mean, I was right about what I saw when Matt posted a video of some gameplay footage of it over on Twitter right after the chat ended. And I also love how you guys putted some of the full colored illustrations in it, I really love it and you guys did a great job!! 😊👍 (7:42 - 8:13 Really different than from one of the gameplay videos for the 2004 demo version that was uploaded 2 decades back! I mean, I'm talking about the different type of portraits, dialogue and music! 😊) (9:10 - 9:53 Same as from what I talked about, but with the new music and SFX as well! 😊)

I think I like Shantae transformations better when they are, how should I put it, utilised to change Shantae as a controlled character like this game, Risky's Revenge and Half-Genie Hero, as opposed to being specific moves as deployed in Seven Sirens. It's still so strange to me that WayForward actually released the game. I remember reading about its cancellation, I watched a live stream where the team showed of the demo they had, with the wheels for animation tests on the title screen and the sky taken from another game. And now here we are, in 2024, getting the missing chapter. I never thought that day would come.

Too bad the characters don't use the Classic Mr. Bozon designs in illustrations, especially Shantae herself, considering that her sprite is supposed to represent the classic Mr. Bozon design, and the illustration design combines the HGH, Risky's Revenge and 2013 Shantae designs into one. It's like if SEGA revived Sonic Xtreme and made Sonic and friends' UI, cutscenes and illustration designs their Dreamcast era designs with black iris color and then kept the classic model designs intact

They must have underestimated Classic Shantae, when Shantae Advance was a Classic Shantae game and kinda still is At least, there's always Shantae GBC, and that game is like a time capsule

You're half right. When Risky's Revenge was announced, Nintendo Power covered the game and it was originally going to be an episodic game. This idea was seemingly discarded and many areas and features that were present in that preview were not in the final game. Risky Revolution was nothing more than a demo pitch though.
