I love how this took me back to really think about forgotten joys from childhood, and it really is the little things that stand out most. So many ideas moving forward!❤

wild to see this today when this is like a year old and i was just thinking about this when i was at a concert the other night. i was taking pictures before the show of the arena and thinking about the lines of the bleachers and the grid pattern of the netting and i turned to my partner and said 'look at all these shapes, i'm going to making abstract paintings about this place for months!!!!" and it brings me such joy to bring that place home with me after a really special night and put it right into my art! my grandfather was a stamp collector and i spent a big chunk of my youth collecting to connect to him so seeing the stamps in your work reminds me of him and that connection we had, so that 'building connections' part really resonated with me. :)

I love the idea of using familiar shapes tied to childhood memories. Growing up, our living room had beautiful arched windows and stained glass windows that my parents had made themselves. There was so much beauty and I find myself longing for it now that I have a family of my own. I think I’ll try incorporating some of those shapes into my artwork and see where it takes me. Thank you! ❤️

I really enjoyed your talk about shape and how we connect with our memory through shape. It really resonated with me. I specially enjoy the shapes of shadows as they are so surprising and fresh.

Loved the messages. I remember my childhood... My sister a few years older than me played with the paper dolls.. All I got was the left overs of each page. So I would collage with them. That was just as fun because I wasn't really into dolls but was a fan of arts & crafts. Thanks for the memories of childhood.

Thank you for this message. I have struggled with finding meaningful shapes. In my art practice I don’t copy or use other people’s art. It’s really important to me to be authentic and to infuse meaning - even or maybe especially when it’s not easily understood. Thank you for this. I may have found a path I’ve been looking for.

I absolutely loved the idea of connecting back to things from childhood. I’ve been exploring my voice as an artist, trying new mark making tools, brushes, media, etc to see what really resonates with me. Even just watching this video, I can think back to things that stand out to me. I love the idea of creating a visual vocabulary. I’ve started collecting shapes and marks in my sketchbooks. I have more to add now. Thank you Judy! ❤️

Hi Judy 👋 new subscriber from the Emerald Isle 🇨🇮 ❤ I have enjoyed watching a couple of your videos so far but this one stands because of the memories you helped me remember 😁 especially the paper dolls and their wardrobes. So much fun! I also remember choosing a wooden block set for my birthday when I was about 8 years of age and I loved that too. Lego was another favourite of mine. TYSM for rekindling those happy times 😊 food for thought and creativity

Just watched this and although I don't know what Witches Britches are?? May google that! What you said about finding shapes was very helpful as I have struggled with that so far. Love the idea of using the stamps because they were your Dad's. I've bought old papers from eBay and it's lovely to know that people's letters still exist in your paintings. Thank you Judy.

Judy, this was the best message I've heard for ages! Thank you so much for making clear how meaningful these random abstract shapes can be. I'd struggled coming up with shapes that didn't look too much like yours but now you've opened up all sorts of new ideas. And yes, I was smiling at your mention of witches britches!

I absolutely love the story about the stamps & how you have chosen for them to carry on. how beautiful it made me smile because I hope my ancestors in her regard and I do have some thing that I have been putting in paintings not so special is stamps but it’s some of their handwriting from an old ledger book I try to let it show in some of my collages. I found you on Instagram and have been watching your videos. I absolutely love your art. Thank you for sharing your knowledge with us.

I really like this vlog on shapes and how to discover them in our personal memories. I like the nudge to make not only the process but the actual abstract art personal. For me this kind of crosses genres. It's still abstract but also representational, at least in the process. Thank you so much for vlogging and guiding.

Thanks for the memories of cuisenaire rods...I loved them and they taught me well, and interestingly I recently tried to explain them to someone a few years younger than me, so perhaps they were out of use by their time at school. You pronounce them as quinsonaires which I knew wasn’t correct...but I had no idea how to spell it either! I was too young to learn that when I was playing with them learning fractions!!! Or building forts and walls!

Judy thanks for this great posts. I just love the story of the paper dolls. We kept ours in shoes boxes and made our own clothes. Simple wonderful times. I love the ideas of finding your own shapes. I think mine is the Beach rocks. I fell in love with your art when I saw the stripes on the painting which won the Waiheke award. I think it takes practice and confidence to put my own shapes in my paintings. I will start with a new sketchbook. Thanks for sharing.Hugs from Taupo.

You are probably not looking at comments on this video any more now. But I wish we could get a look see at that painting that's the background for this video! The one with the red rectangle with white dots in the lower left hand side. The parts I can see are really awesome! I often get a lot of ideas and inspiration from just looking at other artist's work! This one is really great!!

This was just great. I'm not an abstract artist but took Art2Life 2019 to brush up on basic principles. As you say, "mark-making" comes pretty naturally to most of us, and the course explains color management really well, but I was stymied about what sorts of shapes to use. I tried things, but they were cerebral choices and too often derivative of abstract work I'd seen, which I wasn't happy with. This idea of plumbing your present life and past for evocative, meaningful shapes is VERY helpful.
