The rotation arrows are a very good idea.

Even with them in place I still mess it up.

Great channel, keep up the good work! I look forward to your DIY projects. I've been custom-shaping my own decks from 10x33 Moose blanks with a rasp file and hand sander because no one makes a vert deck for my Size 12 feet and 34" legs and..it's huge fun. ALL my friends envy my 'spray paint jobs'! lol I've gotten good with an X Acto knife and stencils, as well as undercoating, spraying and wet sanding, 'Candy' paint. 😎

Great video Chris! Give flat particle board templates a try. Quick, cheap, easy and the router bit will cut the entire board.

That is definitely a legit way to go. I'm going to stick with something printed for now just because it would be cool to get a direct relationship between what I design on the computer and what comes out at the end, but I think I may end up going hand made anyway. Just testing stuff out!

You should add locating pins on the side of the template to ease up the alignment when screwing into the backing board !
@GoodRoads

I think after this experiment that my goal is to not need the backing board at all. Still wrapping my head around how that might work but I've got a couple ideas

Love the videos! One thing I am not sure I have ever seen mentioned (and please correct me if I'm wrong!) Is how a board is sealed after being pressed, trimmed, shaped and routed!

Awesome 👍🏽👍🏻 I've some old stuff to make a router table, like your's but in time will do, I got one new router will get another but smaller but it will be for edging only , and I don't really have a place to put it so the small one will just be movable at this stage 😀👍🏽

What if you made aluminum castings of the 3d printed template?
@GoodRoads
@GoodRoads 3 жыл бұрын
Hah! You could do that but it would totally be overkill, fun idea though

@@GoodRoads I guess at the juncture of having a 3d printer that is true. I feel like they'd last longer in aluminum but I've never even touched anything 3d printed so I don't know. I always wondered what effect radial or lateral centrifugal force might have on urathane wheels.

we use a cnc router to cut out skateboards in out engineering class you could try something like that- benson engeneering

His goal is to make boards as inexpensively as possible, show his methods, and help others who cannot afford equipment like CNC machines.
@GoodRoads
@GoodRoads 3 жыл бұрын
It's actually a little bit of both. I'd love to get a CNC at some point so I can do more automated production, but for now I want to use the machines I've got and a 3D printer is probably the most accessible CAM option on the market.

What Router Bits do you use? Thanks!

The whole board building hobby is struggling with this right now. We use a top-bearing 3" x 0.75" flush cut bit but nowhere has them in stock right now. There are a couple places where you can scrounge up a 2.5" tall one if you're pressing more low profile decks but if you find the 3" ones anywhere let me know!

Is that a mountainboard sized longboard? Screw placements are under your feet but you have a nose and tail. Giant skateboard?
@GoodRoads
@GoodRoads 3 жыл бұрын
Just a slightly-larger than normal skateboard for pool riding and cruising. 33" long with a 15" wheelbase

Hey! I was looking into starting mountain boarding but there are so many options in so many different price ranges to chose from, do you have any suggestions for a good starter board that's not too expensive?

Just flip the deck over and mount it to the plywood template? Then its as thin as possible for the router. No need for the 3d printed jig
@th3oryO
@th3oryO 3 жыл бұрын
That could work but would have much less support. Im not sure what would be a better option, maybe a taller router bit (which would also be pretty sketch)?

Using a deck as a template totally works. I'm hoping to build myself a template with a flat bottom so I don't have to tip the nose and tail up as I'm routing. It'll make manufacturing that much easier
