Shaping and Rounding off a Wooden Steering Wheel

In this video I am shaping a segmented wooden steering wheel using a "home made" router table. I am also rounding off the edges with a 1/2" radius bit. The areas around the spokes will be shaped later by hand.

Nice wheel buddy! You should try one with an inlay strip. Luthiers use strips for the guitar trim. If you build a PVC pipe steam tube, it would be easy. Cutting the channel would be a breeze with that router setup.

Well it's a bit of a trial really, I was thinking of selling them on the internet. Aimed mostly at classic boat users as wheels the right size etc are getting hard to come by so the idea would be to make them to order. Cheers.

What angle are those cuts cause I keep trying to make a wheel but I always get the angle wrong

What machine are you using under the table. And what drills are those? I know nothing ou carpentry but this is something i would like to try one day.

hi. the machine under the table is a router and the those are router bits he is using (although i do understand the confusion for drills if you are unfamiliar with the tools). also, the bit of table the bit is sticking out of is a jig he made to make this job easyer. usually a router like this is pressed down, but mounting it upside down will give him a better fiew of what he's doing. if you do end up making one, always be carefull with power tools. i hope it helped :-)

What car is it going on?

It's designed for a boat and it will fit onto a 70mm teleflex steering boss with 6 Allen bolts. There will also be a patterned wooden hub in the middle.
