It is the most valuable player for each team. That’s how many of the voters look at it. With the Lakers Shaq had Kobe and they both canceled each other out. Also, sometimes Shaq would not stay in shape in the offseason which Kobe complained about. After Shaq left LA, Kobe didn’t get some MVPs because of his legal troubles in Colorado. When Nash got his MVPs, Shaq was in Miami and Wade was the best player on Miami (the finals MVP).

Shaq realizes that he was lazy and probably coulda been the undisputed goat if he actually tried, especially looking back and being next to kobe. shaq with a kobe work ethic would have tore shit up. he also feels threatened by wemby coming into the league being the best talent since lebron AND a big man.

Facts. Shaq put it all together in 2000 and deseved that MVP. He was 2nd in 1995 to Robinson. Robinson was better. Hakeem was better. He was 2nd to Nash in 2005. Shaq wasn't even top 5 in the league in 2005. Nash, Garnett, Duncan, Kobe, and Wade were all better. Shaq was 3rd in 2001. AI was better. Kobe was better. Duncan and Garnett were better.

When he got to Miami his numbers weren't better outside of increasing his scoring average by 1 measly point in the '04-'05 season. He was on the clear decline during the '03-'04 season.

I've made this same comment on a couple of the videos showing Shaq whining about being robbed of MVPs. I think his best case for being "robbed" was the year Iverson won. It was arguably Shaq's best statistical season, and the Lakers beat the Sixers in 5 games for the championship. However, Iverson got his team to the Finals with less talent, and Shaq had a super elite teammate who ended up leapfrogging him on the all-time GOAT list. It's funny that he brings up Nash robbing him while he was second fiddle to Wade in Miami, but none of the players who won over him while he was still in his prime on the Magic and Lakers. Very interesting.. 🧐🤔

Agreed. I would say AI edges him out in '01 because like you said AI won with a less talented team the same number of games his Lakers won. I like the argument you bring up about Shaq being second fiddle to Wade but nobody brings that up. That is definitely true when you look at Wade's stats from '04-'06 that 2 years stretch where Shaq feels he was robbed. Especially in '06 Wade is definitely the number 1 guy in Miami and on top of that Shaq only played 59 games that year. It's amazing how the media is intimidated of Shaq that they don't bother to call him out on his tom foolery.

Shaq got swept 6 times in the playoffs and he never led the league in rebounds or block shots. He would come into the season out of shape, which you could make the case, that his poor work ethic cost him more possible league MVPs and championships.

shaq shouldve won 2001 mvp. If someone robbed Shaq, it was Iverson and clearly not Nash. 2005 was well deserved for Nash, 2006 one could argue for nash lebron and kobe, but I would've probably given it to Kobe because his heroics in 2006 with trash teammates was epic

Shaq actually finished 3rd to Iverson and Duncan in 2000 and 2001 respectively, in 2004 he finished 2nd to Nash (it was close 65 1st place votes for Nash vs 58 for Shaq) but in 2005 he wasn't even in the MVP conversation that year as Nash beat out Dirk and Lebron.

Nash had way more offensive weapons around him than Iverson ever did. And if you replace Iverson with Nash on that Sixers team, they don't make it to the NBA Finals in 2001. Shaq wasn't robbed. If anything Shaq robbed himself by having a poor work ethic, which led to him coming into the season out of shape. Any player who makes the statement I got hurt on company time, so I'll rehab on company time isn't serious enough about accumulating more accolades, that's someone who's satisfied and content.

Your right it is a regular season award, but I use the playoffs as justification to show that Shaq wasn't worthy of that award because most of the time guys who win the MVP back it up in the playoffs which Shaq didn't in the years, he was in the running to win that award outside of '00. Also, if you want to say Shaq is deserving of the MVP based on the regular season then based on your logic, he was really only worthy of it during the '00 season the year he won it because that was the only year where his team finished with the best record in the league, and he was head and shoulders above everybody else in the league. Give me your argument on why Shaq should have won more than 1 league MVP and what years should he have won it?

TBH I think he easily could have won over Iverson. Iverson won because the narrative was he was carrying his team. But in reality the only thing he did was score. He barely got any assists or rebounds. And even his scoring was extremely inefficient. In reality the rest of his team were running an efficient offense despite him with all other main scorers being very efficient and doing a good job of distributing the ball. Shaq had a way better PER and WS total. And he was the defensive anchor and main rebounder aside from being the primary scorer. Also, if we are talking MVP, meaning value to the team. The Lakers had 2 players with positive BPM totals, Kobe and Shaq (shaqs was also higher than Iverson). The 76ers had basically their entire team with a positive BPM. What is BPM for, well it looks at a players contribution to the team compared to the league average. Meaning the 76ers had more players above league average than the Lakers. I'm not saying that having Kobe doesn't skew this stat at all and suggesting this stat means Shaq didn't have good teammates. But I think it destroys the narrative that Iverson was carrying a bunch of scrubs that year.
