We need more Shaqs in the world. As a person with Bipolar & Depression, I need some of these empowering words in a strong, aggressive, no B/S manner. I never had a Dad in my life to teach me to push through the hardest challenges of my life, but hearing the things Shaq said here & HOW he said it makes me feel like nothing can stop me. I can not imagine being in Joel Embiid’s shoes with Ben Simmons as a teammate. Consider this, Embiid started playing at age 15 and in the next 10 years not only became an excellent defender,a monster in the paint, but also developed an excellent jump shot. Ben Simmons meanwhile was the son of a professional basketball player, played it his whole life and steadfastly refused to develop the single most important skill in the game. Meanwhile the entire Sixers team and organization were forced to walk on eggshells around it.

@Kunle Adeyanju The problem is all through Ben's career he did not have to work for it to get better it looks like. We in phila watch him get paid big bucks and be treated with kid gloves . His first year you remember he sat out most of it so he could win Rookie of the year the following year. In College they claim he had talent but did not work to get better. Here in phila he did the same and so Shaq and the guys in the past worked to get better. They did not make up mental problem as an excuse , he may have them now but the interview he gave did not make me believe he is doing anything to get better. He maybe but if he was working out he would out there everyday trying to improve his game. If he did not want to play that last year he should have given back all that money. He got paid that first year and did nothing but sit. Shaq couldn't make fouls shots and he took the blame and you could watch him in the gym shooing hundreds of them like the players of the past. Ben you see partying. or on the west coast and doing other things. How Kobe use to visit kids all over the place at camps and schools to promote working even harder. Shaq did too, and lot of the players with less talent then /Ben

Ben Simmons has got to understand that the criticism from Philadelphia fans was NOT because of that one Playoff Series. If you listened to them, they've been talking about Ben's lack of improvement in much-needed areas since he was drafted! He had been there for what - 4 years? Free throw shooting and 3-point shooting - as the primary ballhandler - are things that he should have been improving. For his career he has shot ~15 % from 3 and ~60% from the line... As A Point Guard! Yes, his defense is really good, but you need more than that in today's game.

I'mma give Ben the benefit of the doubt. During the interview, he seemed sincere. He's starting to speak out, and then there are people who'd say, "He's still thin-skinned." You know, sometimes, you just gotta show compassion and empathy. Ben's starting to talk, be out there, and be available for the media. It's a process. That first year was not lebron fault. That first year was on D-Wade and nobody wanna talk about that but blame bro .. D-wade first title came against dirk in '06..so when dirk go his chance, he got his revenge and avenged his finals lost..everybody say dwade was the best player for miami for that series, ok so why he couldn't get it done then??he was a superstar fmvp who already beat that team. So to me, that 2011 man's lost was on dwade. It was more about dirk wanting his ring and avenging his lost, then it was lebron melting down..most superstar teams don't win in year one with the exception of the 2017-2018 golden state x-men with kd storm ahh and draymond beast looking ahh..

This is what every interview type podcast is. Nobody is going to agree to do a podcast to come on and get flamed at. The people who do the best in these types of podcasts are the ones who let their guests sit and talk without the mass media nonsense that gets pushed on them. Sometimes it's really good with JJ's podcast just listening to him talk to some people you wouldn't hear much of in the NBA, other times it's basically just a safe space for the controversial types like Ben Simmons and KD.

I whole heartedly feel that Shaq doesn’t want ANY player in the NBA to fail or fall on their face, but he knows what it takes to win in that sport and play at a high level AND he’s seen it all so he’s just calling it how he sees it. There's a lot of pressure on Ben as the PG to facilitate, so I can see why he might've been thinking pass in that situation. It's also probably true that he was aware of his FT struggles and thought "I better pass instead of getting fouled". as someone who has a great deal of respect for Shaq, I’m actually really disappointed in some of the things he had to say here. to write off Ben’s mental health issues just because “everyone has struggles” and because he has money and celebrity girlfriends really shows to me that he hasn’t really struggled in that way. and to not be able to admit you’re wrong about something as trivial as the cellphone in the pocket thing - bruh, go back and watch the tape. it’s clearly a blue and white jersey. cmon Shaq

Having enjoyed the interview and appreciated what Ben had the say, I was actually with Shaqs perspective on this but the whole thing about "when you're down, you look down, he looks fine to me" is just ignorant and wrong. As someone who has become an expert at "looking fine" despite serious mental health issues of my own, it becomes second nature putting the mask on everyday and you never really know what someone is going through.

I know you're being sarcastic here, but back then, mental health wasn't "thing". You were just expected to show up and perform, even if you where hearing voices, or the sound of marbles rolling around in your head. Look at what happened to Scottie Pippen when he had those migraine headaches during the ECF. He was TORCHED in the media, no sympathy at all.

That was absolutely a jersey. used to really like Shaq. But this episode really changed my view of him. YES....We all go through struggles but we all deal with them 💯 percent differently, because we are not the same. Ben expressed pretty much everything he was feeling and going thru in that interview. But nothing Ben says matters only what people "See eith there own eyes" as Shaq said.... He's a twirp. Ben didn't hire you to make his greatness greater. He's expressing what he needed you for, when the whole world is saying he's the reason for them losing. And these 3 might see a phone, I see a jersey. Wake up people there is no way a phone would stay at the top of the pocket of sweats. Impossible. God bless and Be humane to humans
